  THE CORRS - BREATHLESS (2001) hit #34

Album: In Blue (2000)

December 18th 2000 - my #3 favorite daily song for 128 days over Xmas 2000 and my 30th birthday. One of the catchiest perfect pop songs ever recorded and totally in the style of Shania Twain as it was written and produced by Robert Mutt Lange who created the Shania sound.

Breathless" is a single by Irish folk/pop/rock group The Corrs, released in 2000, taken from their third studio album In Blue.

"Breathless" was co-written and produced by famed music producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who's produced for such acts as Shania Twain and Def Leppard, and programmed by Richard Meyer aka Swayd. The song scaled the charts all over the world, including hitting number 1 in Ireland, France, Spain and the UK -- their only British chart-topper to date. It also went top ten in Australia and #34 in the United States in March 2001, giving the Corrs their only US Top 40 hit. The single was the 33rd biggest-selling in the UK in 2000. It was also featured in the opening scene of the film The Wedding Date, starring Debra Messing; it plays in the background while Messing's character races around her New York City apartment, trying to prepare to catch a plane.

In 2001 the song was nominated for a Grammy Award for best pop performance by a duo or group

FAITH HILL - THE WAY YOU LOVE ME (2001) hit #7
The Way You Love Me" is a song by American country music artist Faith Hill. It was the second single off her 1999 Breathe album, released as a single in 2000. It was also her second number one country single from her CD Breathe and her 8th number one country single overall. This song spent four weeks at #1 on the Billboard Country charts in May 2000 and peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 30, 2000.

The music video for "The Way You Love Me" was directed by Joseph Kahn.It first aired on television the week of August 21, 2000. The music video shows Faith as many different characters. It shows Faith as a mom, meteorologist, waitress, heiress, and nurse.

There was also a remix video using the "Love To Infinity Remix". The only difference is that Faith is shown as two extra characters, a police officer and a robber. Jennette McCurdy best known as Sam Puckett on iCarly, was also featured in the video as Hill's daughter in the backseat of a station wagon

Faith Hill (born Audrey Faith Perry; September 21, 1967) is an American country singer. She is known both for her commercial success and her marriage to fellow country star Tim McGraw. Hill has sold more than 40 million records worldwide and accumulated eight number-one singles and three number-one albums on the U.S. Country charts.

Hill has been honored by the Grammy Awards, the Academy of Country Music, the Country Music Association, the American Music Awards and the People's Choice Awards. Her Soul2Soul II Tour 2006 with McGraw became the highest-grossing country tour of all time. In 2001, she was named one of the "30 Most Powerful Women in America" by Ladies Home Journal. In 2008, Hill released her first Christmas album, titled Joy to the World. In 2009 Billboard named her as the #1 Adult Contemporary artist of the decade 2000-2009. Hill was ranked the 39th best artist of the 2000-10 decade by Billboard

    FAITH HILL - THERE YOU'LL BE (2001) hit #10
There You'll Be" is a song by Faith Hill, which became a hit single in 2001. Written by Diane Warren it was featured on the Pearl Harbor soundtrack. The song was also featured on Hill's greatest hits albums There You'll Be and The Hits.

"There You'll Be" was first offered to Celine Dion, who reportedly turned it down. The song's music video was directed by Michael Bay, who also directed Pearl Harbor. The video was set in the same time period as the film, and drew many parallels. A cover of this song appears in Dance Dance Revolution Extreme.

Released in May 2001, "There You'll Be" reached a peak of #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 2001 due to strong airplay. No commercial CD single was released because producers wanted to boost sales of the Pearl Harbor soundtrack, which forced the song to chart solely on airplay in the United States. The song also reached #11 on the Billboard Country Singles Chart. The song was a big hit on the Adult Contemporary chart, staying at number one for 12 non consecutive weeks. It was also popular in Canada, as it topped the singles chart in August 2001.

It is by far Faith Hill's biggest hit single in the UK to date, debuting and peaking at #3 on the UK Singles Chart in June 2001 and spent 15 weeks inside the Top 75. On September 20, 2008 a contestant called Amy Connelly sang the song in her auditions of The X Factor. Her performance was so moving it reduced the judges to tears and the viewing public liked it so much that it renewed interest in the original Faith Hill rendition of the song and the track re-entered the UK Singles Chart at #10 the very next week based purely on downloads, which gave the song an extra 4 weeks inside the Top 75 giving the song a total of 19 weeks.

It was nominated for a 2002 Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, but losing out to "I'm Like a Bird" from singer Nelly Furtado. The song also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, but also lost to "If I Didn't Have You" from Disney/Pixar's Monsters, Inc.

WHITNEY HOUSTON - THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER (2001) hit #6
The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States of America. The lyrics come from "Defence of Fort McHenry", a poem written in 1814 by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet, Francis Scott Key, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy ships in Chesapeake Bay during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812.

The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a men's social club in London. "The Anacreontic Song" (or "To Anacreon in Heaven"), with various lyrics, was already popular in the United States. Set to Key's poem and renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner", it would soon become a well-known American patriotic song. With a range of one and a half octaves, it is known for being difficult to sing. Although the poem has four stanzas, only the first is commonly sung today.

"The Star-Spangled Banner" was recognized for official use by the Navy in 1889, and by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, and was made the national anthem by a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931 (46 Stat. 1508, codified at 36 U.S.C. § 301), which was signed by President Herbert Hoover.

With America entangled in the Persian Gulf War, Houston performed "The Star Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV at Tampa Stadium on January 27, 1991. Due to overwhelming response to her rendition, it was released as a commercial single and video of her performance, and reached the Top 20 on the US Hot 100, making her the only act to turn the national anthem into a pop hit of that magnitude (Jose Feliciano's version reached No. 50 in November 1968). Houston donated all her share of the proceeds to the American Red Cross Gulf Crisis Fund. As a result, the singer was named to the Red Cross Board of Governors.

Her rendition was critically acclaimed and is considered the benchmark for singers. Rolling Stone commented that "her singing stirs such strong patriotism. Unforgettable", and the performance ranked No. 1 on the 25 most memorable music moments in NFL history list. VH1 listed the performance as one of the greatest moments that rocked TV. Following the attacks on 9/11, it was released again by Arista Records, all profits going towards the firefighters and victims of the attacks. This time it peaked at No. 6 in the Hot 100 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

ATC - AROUND THE WORLD (2001) hit #28

Album: Planet Pop (2000)

One of the first songs I really liked and played a lot when starting to download mp3 files through Napster in 2000.

April 24th 2001 - my #3 favorite daily song for 121 days at age 30 while living in Dalmeny.

Around the World (La La La La La)" is a song by German Eurodance group ATC. It was released as their debut single from their debut album, Planet Pop in 2000 in Europe, and in 2002 in the United Kingdom. It samples the song "Pesenka" by Russian group Ruki Vverkh, and it was produced by German producer Alex Christensen. The song reached No. 1 on the Top 40 charts in 2000. The song was released as a digital download for the first time on RealPlayer's Rhapsody MP3 store (from Now That's What I Call Music! 6). The song, as well as the album, is available on the Canadian iTunes Store. It is the group's signature song. The song hit #28 in USA and #10 in Canada.

    NELLY FURTADO - I'M LIKE A BIRD (2001) hit #9
I'm Like a Bird" is a song written by Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado, and produced by Gerald Eaton and Brian West, as the first single from her first album Whoa, Nelly!.

It was one of the most successful singles of 2001, reaching number one in Canada, number two in Australia and New Zealand, number five in the UK, and number nine in the United States.

The song received very positive reviews from music critics for Furtado's singing and the empowering lyrics, and became one of the most critically acclaimed songs of 2001. Many also consider it to be her signature song. Even Furtado herself likes the song, explaining "There's a simplicity about it that I love," and "It's my freedom song". The song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, making Furtado the first female act to win the award for her debut single since Mariah Carey did so ten years earlier and the last to be awarded to a Canadian artist winner in the category. It also won the Juno Award for Single of the Year.

Nelly Kim Furtado (born December 2, 1978) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, record producer and actress. Furtado first gained fame with her debut album, Whoa, Nelly!, and its single "I'm Like a Bird", which won a 2001 Juno Award for Single of the Year and a 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Her second studio album, Folklore, was released. It was less commercially successful in the US but produced three international singles: "Powerless (Say What You Want)", "Try", and "Força" (the theme of the 2004 European Football Championship). Her third studio album, Loose was her biggest success worldwide. It produced the number-one hits "Promiscuous", "Maneater", "Say It Right" and "All Good Things (Come to an End)". After a three-year break, she released her first full-length Spanish album, Mi Plan in September 2009. For Mi Plan, Furtado received the Latin Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Album. Furtado's fourth English-language studio album, The Spirit Indestructible, is set for release on September 11, 2012.

    ALICIA KEYS - FALLIN' (2001) hit #1

Fallin'" is a song recorded, written, and produced by American recording artist Alicia Keys for her debut album, Songs in A Minor. Released to radio and music video outlets in 2001, it is generally considered her signature song. "Fallin'" became Keys' first number-one single in the United States and her first top five hit in several countries. It is also Keys' second biggest single to date after 2007's "No One". In 2009 the single was named the 29th most successful song of the 2000s, on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade. Rolling Stone ranked it number sixty-two on their Top 100 Songs of the 2000s decade. The song charted at 413 in Blender magazine's 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born. "Fallin'" won three Grammy Awards in 2002, including Song of the Year, Best R&B Song, and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and was also nominated for Record of the Year.

In the United States, "Fallin'" debuted at number ninety-eight on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of June 16, 2001. The song stayed on the chart for nine weeks before eventually peaking at number one on the chart. It remained on the chart for a total of 34 weeks. It managed to chart on the 2001 Billboard Year-End Hot 100 at number two behind Lifehouse's "Hanging by a Moment".

As one of the most critically acclaimed singles of 2001, "Fallin'" was nominated for several awards. "Fallin'" connected well with NARAS as the song was nominated in 2002 for four Grammy Awards: Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best R&B Song. It ended up winning all but one of the awards she was nominated for (Record of the Year was awarded to U2's "Walk On").

At the 2001 Billboard Music Awards, "Fallin'" was nominated for the Hot 100 Single of the Year; however, it lost the award to Lifehouse's "Hanging by a Moment". The song was also nominated for Outstanding Song and Outstanding Music Video at the 2002 NAACP Image Awards; it did not win in either category

    JENNIFER LOPEZ - PLAY (2001) hit #18
Play" is a song by American recording artist Jennifer Lopez from her second album J.Lo (2001). Singer Christina Milian co-penned the song for Lopez before hitting the music scene herself. She was also credited with providing vocals for the song's chorus.

The single was another hit for Lopez, peaking at number eighteen on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play.

In 2004 South Korean girl group Baby V.O.X. covered "Play" in Korean and English for their final album, Ride West, with featured vocals from the original version by Christina Milian, though neither she or Lopez appear in the music video.

Sal Cinquemani from Slant Magazine called it "funky", while Jake Barnes referred to it as a "Prince-like".

Jennifer Lynn Lopez (born July 24, 1969), often known by her moniker J.Lo, is an American actress, businesswoman, dancer and recording artist. Born and raised in The Bronx, New York, she enrolled in singing and dancing classes. She started her career as a Fly Girl on the television program In Living Color and as a back-up dancer for Janet Jackson. Lopez gained recognition in the action-thriller Money Train (1995). Her first leading role was in the biographical film Selena (1997), which was her breakthrough role, earning her an ALMA Award for Outstanding Actress and Golden Globe nomination. She also starred in the box office hit Anaconda (1997) and earned her second ALMA Award for her performance in Out of Sight (1998), which made her the highest-paid Latin actress.

PINK - GET THE PARTY STARTED (2001) hit #4
Get the Party Started" is a song performed by Pink, and was the first single from her second album called Missundaztood (2001). It became an international hit and reached the top ten in many countries. The song was Pink's highest selling at that time. The track was released on October 9, 2001 to positive reviews from critics and after the release of the single it was confirmed that Pink would be releasing Missundaztood.

It reached number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on December 29, 2001, becoming one of Pink's biggest solo hits in the U.S. with "Most Girls" also reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2000 and "So What" reaching number one in 2008, "Raise Your Glass" reaching number one in 2010 and "Fuckin' Perfect" that reached number two in America. It peaked at number two in the UK, where it was narrowly denied the top spot by the posthumous release of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord". It reached number-one in Australia and number-two in many European countries most notably Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, being held off from the top position by Shakira's smash hit "Whenever, Wherever". "Get the Party Started" was certified gold in Australia, Austria, Germany,France Sweden and Switzerland, and in Norway it received a platinum certification. The song was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2003 in the category of "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance", which it lost to Norah Jones's "Don't Know Why". It won the award for "Favorite Song" at the Kids' Choice Awards of 2002, and at the MTV Europe Music Awards of 2002 it won the award for "Best Song". "Get the Party Started" is often considered one of Pink's signature songs as she tends to finish her shows with this song in her encore section along with a ballad song such as "Nobody Knows" and "Glitter In The Air". In December, the song was listed as number 81 on Rolling Stone's Top Songs of the 2000s.

NELLY FURTADO - TURN OFF THE LIGHT (2001) hit #5
Turn Off the Light" is a song written by Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado for her debut studio album, Whoa, Nelly!. Produced by Gerald Eaton and Brian West, it was released as the album's second single in mid-2001 (see 2001 in music). Furtado, who cited a song by the Canadian band Big Sugar as the inspiration for "Turn Off the Light", has described it as "a real song ... Though I may seem so independent and stuff, blah, blah, blah, when I turn out the light at night I can get lonely just like everybody else. Maybe that's why it's such a good song and everyone is responding to it – because it's real. Just a song with a fun, hooky chorus."

The song eventually became her most successful song at the time of its release. In New Zealand, it became her first number-one single there and stayed in the chart for twenty-seven weeks. It became the second most successful song of 2001 year-end chart. The song is 28th most successful song in that country and the most successful song for Nelly Furtado in that country. It peaked at number five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. A remix featuring rappers Ms. Jade and Timbaland was released, and a dance remix reached number one on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. The song ranked at number 70 in the Year-End chart of 2001 and at number 92 on the 2002 recap. It peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay Chart. It peaked at number seven in Australia, being her second top ten single there and stayed in the chart for twenty-one weeks. It also peaked at number four in United Kingdom, becoming her second top five single there.

    DESTINYS CHILD - BOOTYLICIOUS (2001) hit #1
Bootylicious" is a song by American R&B group Destiny's Child. It was written and produced by Rob Fusari, Falonte Moore, and group member Beyoncé Knowles for the band's third studio album Survivor (2001), and contains a prominent sample from the 1981 recording "Edge of Seventeen",[1] as written and performed by Stevie Nicks.

The track was released as the album's second single from the album in 2001 and became the band's fourth U.S. non-consecutive number-one single. It also reached the top-five in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Although the term "bootylicious" was first coined by rapper Snoop Dogg in 1992, the popularity of this track caused the word to be added to the Oxford English Dictionary (defined as "(of a woman) sexually attractive") in 2004.

Bootylicious" debuted at number 66 on the Hot 100 on June 9, 2001 and climbed to its peak position nine weeks later, though remained on the chart for a relatively short nineteen weeks. To date, this remains the last song by a girl group to top the U.S. charts. The song became Destiny's Child's fifth consecutive number one on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, despite Mariah Carey's "Loverboy" keeping it from topping the Hot 100 Singles Sales.

In the UK, "Bootylicious" was released on July 23, 2001 and debuted at number two on the singles chart behind the Atomic Kitten cover single "Eternal Flame". It sold over 169,000 copies and propelled Survivor back to the top of The Official UK Albums Chart.

DAVID BALL - RIDING WITH PRIVATE MALONE (2001) hit #36 (#2 country)
Riding with Private Malone" is the title of a song written by Wood Newton and Thom Shepherd, and recorded by American country music artist David Ball. Released in August 2001 as the first single from his fifth studio album Amigo, the song reached a peak of #2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts chart, and #36 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was Ball's first Top 40 country hit since "Look What Followed Me Home" in 1995. USA Today referred to it as "the country song that tapped most subtly and profoundly into the emotions of its audience" after the September 11 attacks, even though it was released to radio a few weeks before the attacks.

Co-writer Wood Newton told The Boot that Thom Shepherd had the name of Malone, because it rhymed with home. Newton had seen a story about a guy who had restored a 1966 Corvette and put up a website about it. He had also seen another story about this guy who restored a car and he would tune the radio to one channel but it would always change back to a different station, so he thought the car was haunted. Newton said they chose a 1966 Corvette because it was an amazing icon of American ingenuity.  Newton and Thom debuted the song on March 23, 2001 at the Opry Star Spotlight.

The song describes a narrator who just finished his military service and purchases what turns out to be Chevrolet Corvette through the classified ads. Upon purchasing the car, he opens its glove compartment, where he finds a note written by the car's former owner, a deceased soldier of the Vietnam War. The note is dated 1966 and tells of the car's origins: it came from a soldier referred to as Private Andrew Malone.

Deborah Evans Price, of Billboard magazine reviewed the song favorably saying that the lyric "incorporates all the elements that make traditional country great - patriotism, tragedy, survival, and, of course, a cool car." She goes on to say that the understated production keeps the focus on the story and Ball's "powerful delivery."      "Riding with Private Malone" debuted at number 55 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks for the week of September 8, 2001. Having reached the top 10 by year's end, it was the second independently-distributed single to make the country top 10 that year, making 2001 the first year since 1983 to produce two independently-distributed top 10 hits

LEE ANN WOMACK - I HOPE YOU DANCE (2001) hit #14 (#1 country)
I Hope You Dance" is a crossover country pop song written by Mark D. Sanders and Tia Sillers, and recorded by country singer Lee Ann Womack along with Sons of the Desert. The song, which was featured on Womack's 2000 album of the same name, reached number one on both the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks and Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks charts, and also reached number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100. It is considered to be Womack's signature song, and it is the only Billboard number one for both Womack and for Sons of the Desert. "I Hope You Dance" won the 2001 CMA, ACM, NSAI, ASCAP and BMI awards for Song of the Year. It also won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song and was nominated for Song of the Year. "I Hope You Dance" is ranked 352 in the list "Songs of the Century" complied by Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

"I Hope You Dance" is a mid-tempo country pop ballad in which the narrator, a mother, expresses her wishes to her children.

Two versions of Womack's recording were released. The original version features Sons of the Desert (who, like Womack, was signed to MCA at the time) singing a counterpoint chorus alongside Womack's main chorus, while a second version of the song released for pop radio omits the counterpount chorus in favor of background vocals to accompany the main chorus. The song was also Sons of the Desert's first Top 40 country hit since "Leaving October" in 1998. The music video features Lee Ann Womack singing the song to her daughters.

Ken Barnes of USA Today listed the I Hope You Dance as the fourth best song of 2000 and wrote, "Uplifting message song whose greeting-card sentiments and imprecise rhymes are outweighed by a gorgeous performance by today's reigning pure-country vocalist

    U2 - BEAUTIFUL DAY (2001) hit #21
Beautiful Day" is a song by the rock band U2. It is the first track from their 2000 album, All That You Can't Leave Behind, and it was released as the album's lead single. It was a commercial success, helping launch the album to multi-platinum status, and is one of U2's biggest hits to date. Like many tracks from All That You Can't Leave Behind, "Beautiful Day" harkens back to the group's past sound. The tone of The Edge's guitar was a subject of debate amongst the band members, as they disagreed on whether he should use a sound similar to that from their early career in the 1980s. Lead vocalist Bono explained that the upbeat track is about losing everything but still finding joy in what one has.

The song received positive reviews, and it became their fourth number-one single in the UK and their first number-one in the Netherlands. The song peaked at number 21 in the United States, the band's highest position since "Discothèque" in 1997. In 2001, the song won three Grammy Awards for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. In 2003, a special edition issue of Q, titled "1001 Best Songs Ever", placed "Beautiful Day" at number 747 on its list of the greatest songs. In 2005, Blender ranked the song at number 63 on its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born". It topped the U.S. charts for the week of February 17, 2001, and won a 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. It also reached number one in Germany and number two in the United Kingdom, held from the top spot by Atomic Kitten's "Whole Again". In October 2011, NME placed it at number 81 on its list "150 Best Tracks of the Past 15 Years".

The single helped sell the album following mixed reaction to the lead single "B.O.B.", which, despite nearly universal acclaim from critics, failed to chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and only reached #69 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

The song samples "Strawberry Letter 23" by The Brothers Johnson (with pitch shifting and reversing) and features an altered version of a tune from "Bridal Chorus" from the opera Lohengrin by German composer Richard Wagner (also known as the "wedding march"), played on piano.

The song features live bass instrumentation, performed by Aaron Mills of Cameo, the music of which "Ms. Jackson" bears notable similarity to in arrangement.

TOBY KEITH - I WANNA TALK ABOUT ME (2001) hit #28 (#1 country)
"I Wanna Talk About Me" is the title of a song written by Bobby Braddock and recorded by American country music artist Toby Keith. It was released in August 2001 as the second single from Keith's album Pull My Chain. The song was his seventh Number One single on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts.

Like Keith's 1998 single "Getcha Some", "I Wanna Talk About Me" is cited as an example of country-rap, due to the use of a strong beat and rhythmically spoken lyrics Songwriter Bobby Braddock ("He Stopped Loving Her Today") was inspired to write a song in that style after hearing "Getcha Some" and pitched it to Keith. "I Wanna Talk About Me" tells of a male's frustration in his inability to converse with his partner, who wants to talk about herself. In the chorus, the singer states "I like talking about you, you, you, you, usually / But occasionally / I wanna talk about me".

Blake Shelton was originally slated to record the song. However, his label turned it down, as they thought it would be too risky of a debut single.

Ray Waddell, of Billboard magazine in his review of the album, said that a lot of men will be able to relate to the song, "which Keith manages to sell through sheer force of personality."

The music video was directed by Michael Salomon and shows Toby following a girl around while she talks about different things that interest her. It was released in August 2001.

"I Wanna Talk About Me" debuted at number 51 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks for the week of August 25, 2001.
