  JULIAN LENNON - VALOTTE (1984)

Album: Valotte (1984)

Of course this song became his debut hit due to being the son of John Lennon. I did immediately buy the album that late 1984 at age 13 in Grade 9. But this song is as powerful as any great Beatles classic and still love this one !

"Valotte" is a song by British singer Julian Lennon, the title track and second single (first single in the U.S.) from his debut album Valotte. It was a top-ten hit single in January 1985 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the U.S., peaking at number nine. It was co-written by Lennon, Justin Clayton and Carlton Morales and recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The first line of the chorus, "Sitting on a pebble by the river playing guitar", was written by Lennon, inspired by the Tennessee River in Muscle Shoals. The music video for the song was directed by Sam Peckinpah
John Charles Julian Lennon (born 8 April 1963) is a British musician, songwriter, actor, and photographer. He is the son of John Lennon and Lennon's first wife, Cynthia Powell. Beatles manager Brian Epstein was his godfather. He has a younger half-brother, Sean Lennon. Lennon was named after his paternal grandmother, Julia. He remains close friends with his father's former bandmate Paul McCartney.

Julian directly inspired three Beatles songs: "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", "Hey Jude" and "Good Night". He is also devoted to philanthropic endeavors, most notably his own White Feather Foundation and the Whaledreamers Organization, both of which promote the co-existence of all species and the health and well-being of the Earth.

His sixth studio album Everything Changes was released on 3 October 2011

  ASHFORD & SIMPSON - SOLID (1985) hit #12
Solid" is a hit single recorded by the husband-and-wife songwriting duo Ashford & Simpson. It was featured on their album, also titled Solid and released as a single in late 1984.

It was written by the two and follows a similar template of most of their hits for other artists, except with a slight 1980s inflection to the music. In the lyrics, the narrators of the song celebrate the fact that, through all the difficulties and problems their relationship has faced, they made their love stronger by learning how to forgive and trust each other, and their love for one another remains "solid as a rock."

It remains as their biggest hit single as performers, topping the U.S. R&B chart, peaking at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and peaking at number three on the UK Singles Chart in 1985. It was the 16th best-selling single of 1985 in the UK. In the TV movie Fred The Movie , Fred dreams of himself and Judy singing the song.

Nickolas Ashford (May 4, 1942 – August 22, 2011), and Valerie Simpson (born August 26, 1946), were a husband and wife songwriting/production team and recording artists.

Ashford was born in Fairfield, South Carolina, and Simpson in the Bronx, New York. They met at Harlem's White Rock Baptist Church in 1963. After having recorded unsuccessfully as a duo, they joined aspiring solo artist and former member of the Ikettes, Joshie Jo Armstead, at the Scepter/Wand label where their compositions were recorded by Ronnie Milsap ("Never Had It So Good"), Maxine Brown ("One Step At A Time"), as well as the Shirelles and Chuck Jackson. Another of the trio's songs, "Let's Go Get Stoned", gave Ray Charles a number one U.S. R&B hit in 1966. That same year Ashford & Simpson joined Motown, where their best-known songs included "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "You're All I Need To Get By", "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing", and "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)". Ashford and Simpson wrote many other hit songs including Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman" (1978) and Teddy Pendergrass's "Is It Still Good to You?" As performers, Ashford & Simpson's best-known duets are "Solid (As a Rock)" (1984 US and 1985 UK), and "Found a Cure" (1979). The duo was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002.

THE MARY JANE GIRLS - IN MY HOUSE (1985) hit #7
In My House" is the first single released from the American R&B girl group Mary Jane Girls album, Only Four You in 1985. The song went to number one on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in April of that year and remained atop the chart for two weeks. It was also a top 10 hit on both the U.S. pop and R&B charts. The song peaked at number seven on the pop chart in June 1985 and remained in the Top 40 for 12 weeks. It is the group's biggest hit song and, to date, their only Top 40 hit, although they have had other singles succeed on both the R&B and dance charts.

The song was produced by Rick James. In the song, the group declares their devotion to a man and telling him that they will be available to him anytime: If you need some love and tenderness / And it's me, baby, that you miss / Here's the key to unlock the door / To my house, my house.

In 2009, VH1 ranked "In My House" #52 on its program 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s.

In 1984, the Parents Music Resource Center was organized in the U.S. to draw attention to music which the group believed contained inappropriate content for children. "In My House" was chosen on the group's "Filthy Fifteen" list due to its alleged sexual innuendo. However, during the 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s program, the group went on record as saying the song is not about sex, but about love

The Mary Jane Girls were an American R&B, soul, funk and disco group in the 1980s. They were protégées of singer Rick James. They are known for their hit songs "All Night Long", "Candyman" and "In My House".

    A-HA - TAKE ON ME (1985) hit #1
Take on Me" is a song by the Norwegian pop band A-ha. Written by the band members, the song was produced by Alan Tarney for the group's first studio album Hunting High and Low, released in 1985. The song combines synthpop with a varied instrumentation that includes acoustic guitars, keyboards, and drums.     The original "Take on Me" was recorded in 1984, and took three releases to chart in the United Kingdom, reaching number two on the UK Singles Chart in November 1985. In the United States, the song reached the top position of the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1985, due in no small part to the wide exposure of its memorable and cutting-edge music video on MTV, directed by Steve Barron. The video features the band in a pencil-sketch animation called rotoscoping, combined with live action.

At the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards, the video for "Take on Me" won six awards—Best New Artist in a Video, Best Concept Video, Most Experimental Video, Best Direction, Best Special Effects, and Viewer's Choice—and was nominated for two others, Best Group Video and Video of the Year. It was also nominated for Favorite Pop/Rock Video at the 13th American Music Awards in 1986.

"Take on Me" was originally released in 1984, and was mixed by Tony Mansfield, but failed to make an impact in the United Kingdom. The group re-recorded the song with the help of producer Alan Tarney, releasing the new version in late 1984: this release peaked at number three in Norway but failed to reach audiences abroad.   In the United States, Warner Bros. invested in the revolutionary second video for "Take on Me," which used Tarney's version of the song. The new video was released to dance clubs and television a month before the record was available in stores or played on the radio. Wide exposure on MTV made the song quickly soar to the top position of the Billboard Hot 100 on 19 October 1985. It remained on the chart for twenty-three weeks, and ended up at the tenth position of the 1985 year-end chart.

FOREIGNER - THAT WAS YESTERDAY (1985) hit #12
That Was Yesterday" was the second single taken from the album Agent Provocateur by the band Foreigner. This song was available in four versions, as a remixed single, a very popular extended remix, an orchestral version, and the original mix. The song was written by Lou Gramm and Mick Jones, and the B-side "Two Different Worlds" is also of note for being the first solo-written Lou Gramm song to appear on a single. The single reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and also reached #4 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and #24 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It also reached the Top 40 in the UK (#28), the Netherlands (#19), Switzerland (#29) and Germany (#31).

The extended remix added additional lyrics in its intro, and these lyrics can be heard in the live version from the DVD All Access Tonight - 25 - Live In Concert. The video was filmed at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center in Birmingham, Alabama.

Allmusic critic Bret Adams called the song "a terrific hit single," citing its "catchy chorus" and "nifty synthesizer lick

Their album, Agent Provocateur, was released successfully in December 1984, and gave them their first and only No. 1 hit in 1985 (in U.S., UK, Australia, Norway, Sweden, etc.), "I Want to Know What Love Is," written by Mick Jones, a gospel-inspired ballad backed by the New Jersey Mass Choir.[5][6][7] The song was their biggest US hit. "That Was Yesterday" was the next single from the album in early 1985 and proved to be another sizable hit.

In December 1987, Foreigner released Inside Information, spawning hits such as "Say You Will" and "I Don't Want to Live Without You."

    DURAN DURAN - SAVE A PRAYER (1985) hit #16
Save a Prayer" is the sixth single by Duran Duran, released on 9 August 1982.

The song was the third single from the band's second album Rio. It became Duran Duran's biggest hit to date (at the time) in the UK Singles Chart, reaching #2, held out of the top spot by Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger".

It was not originally issued as a single in the United States, although the video was very popular on MTV. However, a special US Single version with the live version from the Arena album on the flip side was released in January 1985. The single reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Duran Duran are an English rock band, formed in Birmingham in 1978. They were one of the most successful bands of the 1980s and a leading band in the MTV-driven "Second British Invasion" of the United States. Since the 1980s, they have placed 14 singles in the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart and 21 in the Billboard Hot 100 and have, according to the Sunday Mercury, sold more than 100 million records. While they were generally considered part of the New Romantic scene along with bands such as Spandau Ballet when they first emerged, they later shed this image. The band worked with fashion designers to build a sharp and elegant image that earned them the nickname "the prettiest boys in rock." The band's controversial videos, which included partial nudity and suggestions of sexuality, became popular in the early 1980s on the then-new music video channel MTV. Duran Duran were among the first bands to have their videos shot by professional directors with 35 mm film movie cameras, which gave their videos a much more polished look. In 1984, the band were early innovators with video technology in their live stadium shows

GLEN ROYER - THE HEAT IS ON (1985) hit #2
The Heat is On" is a song written by Harold Faltermeyer and Keith Forsey and recorded by Glenn Frey, from Faltermeyer and Forsey's soundtrack of the popular 1984 film Beverly Hills Cop.

It was a major hit single in its own right, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in March 1985, behind "Can't Fight This Feeling" by REO Speedwagon. It was also quite popular internationally, reaching number two on the Australian Singles Chart in 1985 and gaining peaks of number 8 on the Canadian Singles Chart and number 12 on the UK Singles Chart.

The mid-to-up-tempo recording featured a steady drumbeat, synthesizer, and guitar, with a repeated saxophone riff framing the lyrical message. The guitar solo is played by Frey himself. The music video for the song received heavy MTV airplay. It showed a film editor assembling scenes for Beverly Hills Cop while Frey and a band played the song in the adjacent room, with action scenes from the movie then directly interspersed. Among the musicians shown in the video is saxophone player Beverly Dahlke-Smith, who did not play on the actual recording.

The recording subsequently appeared on Frey's albums Glenn Frey Live (1993) and Solo Collection (1995) as well as on some various-artists 'top hits' collections.

The song was ranked 784th out of 2006 songs by voting featured in the Triple M Essential 2006 Countdown.

    THE FIRM - RADIOACTIVE (1985) hit #28
Radioactive" is a song by English rock band The Firm. It was the first single released from their eponymous début album The Firm, where it was the fifth track. It was written by Paul Rodgers.

A compact and straightforward rock song from the 1980s, structured with Tony Franklin's fretless bass hook at the beginning, combined with Page's guitar scratch on the third line in the verse, Rodgers' reverbed vocal, and followed by a wah pedal inflected guitar solo. Chris Slade plays a steady drum beat throughout. On live performances, the song was introduced with a drum solo from Slade, leading into Franklin's opening bass line. Page utilized his brown 1960s Fender Telecaster guitar featuring a Parsons and White B-string bender on tour with this song.

Their self-titled album, appearing on Atlantic Records, cracked the Billboard Top 20 on the strength of this single. Jimmy Page broke with the past and participated in the recording for the promotional film clip and single, the first time he had done both since the late 1960s. Page can be seen miming to the recording with his famous red doubleneck 1971 Gibson EDS-1275 guitar. In March 1985, MTV began heavily promoting the video clip, although the track was a modest seller, reaching #28 in America and topping the Top Rock Tracks chart for one week. "Radioactive" was also released as a 12" single and limited edition picture disc.

Paul Rodgers stills performs this song during his solo sets and it appears on the 2007 Paul Rodgers: Live In Glasgow DVD.

WHITNEY HOUSTON - SAVING ALL MY LOVE FOR YOU (1985) hit #1
Saving All My Love for You" is a song written by Michael Masser and Gerry Goffin with arrangement by Gene Page. It was originally a minor hit for Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. in 1978 on their album Marilyn & Billy (although Davis’ voice was not heard on their version). This article focuses primarily on the cover version by Whitney Houston, the second hit single from her self-titled debut album. The song charting topped Billboard Hot 100, being her first number one in the chart.

This jazzy ballad is about a love affair with a married man, and the singer is saving all her love for him.

The music video, directed by Stuart Orme, was filmed in London, and features Houston singing and recording with her married music producer, and falling in love with him along the way.

Released in 1985, Whitney's version of "Saving All My Love for You" entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #53, jumping to #39 the following week (August 24), and reaching the Top 10 five weeks later. The single reached the #1 spot the week of October 26, 1985, and would became the first of seven record-setting consecutive number-one singles in the United States for Houston; a record that still holds. The single eventually spent fifteen weeks in the top forty. The song also became a global hit, hitting #1 or the Top 10 in various countries around the world. It also hit #1 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It ranked #5 on Billboard year-end top black singles chart. In the UK the song hit #1 in December 1985 for two weeks. The single went on to become one of the top 25 best-selling singles of 1985 in the UK.

Houston won the 1986 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and the American Music Award for Favorite R&B/Soul Video for "Saving All My Love for You

    JOHN HUNTER - TRAGEDY (1985) hit #39

I had just started listening to American Top 40 with Casey Kasem every week starting in February 1985 and this one of the first low charting songs I ever heard simply cause it made the countdown so I remember taping the video off TV on my Beta VCR.

Hunter is an American singer and musician. He is best known for his 1984 single, "Tragedy", which peaked at #39 the following year.

He released one album, Famous at Night, in 1984, which featured "Tragedy". He also released a follow-up, More Than Meets the Eye.

THE HONEYDRIPPERS - SEA OF LOVE (1985) hit #3
Sea of Love" is a song written by John Phillip Baptiste (aka Phil Phillips) and George Khoury. Phillips' 1959 recording of the song peaked at #1 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the UK, Marty Wilde covered the song, and Phillips' version failed to chart there. It was the only top 40 chart song for Phillips, who never recorded another hit.

The song has been covered by a number of artists since then, most notably by The Honeydrippers, whose version (from the album The Honeydrippers: Volume One) reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1985 and #1 on the adult contemporary chart in 1984. Tom Waits gave the song a darker twist for the soundtrack to the 1989 Harold Becker film Sea of Love starring Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin, and Waits included it on his 2006 collection Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards. "Sea of Love" had made the Top 40 just one other time, when Del Shannon took it to #33 in 1981.

Baptiste, who was working as a bellboy in Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA, wrote "Sea of Love" for a love interest. He was introduced to local record producer George Khoury, who brought Baptiste into his studio to record the song. At Khoury's request, Baptiste took the stage name of Phil Phillips. The song, originally credited to Phil Phillips with The Twilights, was released on a small record label owned by Khoury, but due to its success was eventually leased to Mercury Records. Despite the song's success, Phillips claims that he has only ever received US$6,800 for recording it

The song was the subject of the 1989 Harold Becker film Sea of Love starring Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin. The 2007 film Juno features a cover version of the song by Cat Power in its soundtrack. The Cat Power version was also featured in an episode of the television show Pretty Little Liars. It was also used in the 1989 TV movie Sweet Bird Of Youth, which starred Elizabeth Taylor. The song was featured at the end of an episode of The Simpsons entitled "Future-Drama" in 2005. It also can be heard in the 2008 episode "The Burns and the Bees", put on by Moe while the queen bee is making out with all the little drones. In "Rumba" (2008), Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon sing this song. In American Dad!, Stan plays the song at the bottom of the ocean for Francine in Stan Time (2009).

EDDIE MURPHY - PARTY ALL THE TIME (1985) hit #2
Party All the Time" was a single originally recorded by comedian and actor Eddie Murphy in 1985, written and produced by Rick James and Kevin Johnston at James's home studio in Buffalo, New York. The single reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, kept off the top by Lionel Richie's "Say You, Say Me".Rick James also provided some vocals for the song.

"Weird Al" Yankovic covered part of the song in his 1986 polka medley "Polka Party!"

In 2006, house DJ and producer Sharam Tayebi of Deep Dish released a remix of the song, known simply as "PATT" (an acronym for "Party All The Time"), that reached No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart. The subsequent music video is a parody of the original, which had featured Murphy, James, members of the Stone City Band and some backup singers recording the song in a studio.

In July 2009, Aubrey O'Day did a cover of the song along with ex-Danity Kane member D. Woods's sister Shanell Woodgette and Grammy Award-winning producer Maestro.

In April 2012, Asher Roth released "Party Girl", the lead single from his second studio album Is This Too Orange?, which samples "Party All the Time"

In March/April 2009, VH1 listed it as #80 on its 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s countdown (though Murphy had another hit with "Put Your Mouth on Me", which reached the Top 40 charts in 1989).

On September 11, 2010, Matthew Wilkening of AOL Radio ranked the song at #36 on the list of the 100 Worst Songs Ever, stating, "If only Eddie Murphy knew an amazingly sharp, funny, music-loving comedian to help rip this 'song' apart..."

    ANIMOTION - OBSESSION (1985) hit #6
Obsession" is a 1983 song covered in 1984 by the synthpop/New Wave group Animotion. The song hit number six in the United States, and number five in the United Kingdom in early 1985, helped by a distinctive video that received heavy rotation on MTV.

"Obsession" was originally written and recorded as a duet by songwriter Holly Knight and musician Michael Des Barres in 1983, although the recording did not perform well. This version was prominently featured in the 1983 film A Night in Heaven, most notably in a scene in which Christopher Atkins bumps and grinds in Lesley Ann Warren's face in sync with the rhythm of the song. The song was featured on the film's soundtrack, but did not receive enough attention to warrant much radio play or a place on any Billboard charts. That version was also featured in the theatrical trailer to the 1986 film 9½ Weeks, starring Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger.

It is a mainstay on 1980s compilations and is featured in the 2002 video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City as part of the New Wave radio station Wave 103. It has also been used as the theme song for WWE Saturday Night's Main Event (aired on NBC) and FashionTelevisionChannel, as well as MTV's House of Style. It was featured in the 2000 comedy film Lucky Numbers and documentary "What the Bleep Do We Know!?". Various artists have covered the song, including The Azoic in 2004, and the Sugababes, for their album - Taller In More Ways, in 2005.

Contrary to popular belief, the song was never covered by The Human League and has often been falsely attributed to them.

The music video features the Animotion band members — focusing on the two singers, Bill Wadhams and Astrid Plane — dressed in various costumes (such as Mark Antony and Cleopatra) while performing the song next to a swimming pool and inside a luxury house.

    HEART - NEVER (1985) hit #4
Never" is the name of a song recorded by rock band Heart. It was released as the second single from the band's self-titled 1985 album Heart. The song is an aggressive rock number with an uplifting lyric to a person who has been discouraged by love. Like their previous single "What About Love", the music video for "Never" was placed in heavy rotation on MTV.

"Never" became Heart's biggest U.S. hit at the time, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. It marked the first time that Heart earned two consecutive top-ten hits, and also the first time a Heart album generated two top-ten singles.

The songs harmonic chorus highlights not only Ann Wilson's powerhouse vocal talent but also the vocal stamina of sister Nancy, who maintains a soprano harmony throughout the course of the song. This track was covered by Mandisa during the fifth season of American Idol."Never" appeared as a selectable song on an episode of Don't Forget the Lyrics and performed by En Vogue.

Heart is an American rock band who first found success in Canada, later also in the United States and worldwide. Over the group's four decade history, the band has had three primary lineups, with the constant members being lead singer Ann Wilson and guitarist Nancy Wilson. Heart rose to fame in the mid 1970s with music influenced by hard rock and heavy metal as well as folk music. Their popularity declined in the early 1980s, but the band enjoyed a comeback starting in 1985 and experienced even greater success with AOR hits and hard rock ballads into the 1990s.

PHIL COLLINS & PHILIP BAILEY - EASY LOVER (1985) hit #2
Easy Lover" is a hit song performed by Philip Bailey and Phil Collins, and written by Bailey, Collins, and Nathan East. The song appeared on Bailey's solo album Chinese Wall. Collins has performed the song in his live concerts and it appears on his 1990 album Serious Hits... Live!, as well as his 1998 compilation album, ...Hits.

The song was a hit in several countries worldwide. In the US it reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and in the UK it reached #1, staying there for four weeks. The single sold over a million copies in the United States and has only been certified Gold -- not Platinum -- since the RIAA requirement for a Platinum single wasn't lowered to 1,000,000 units until 1989. In addition Easy Lover has been certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry for sales of over 400,000 in the UK and platinum in Canada by Music Canada

"Easy Lover" won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Overall Performance in 1985 and was Grammy nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance By A Duo or Group.

The lighthearted video for the song was filmed in London, England and is essentially a music video about the making of a music video.

Philip Irvin Bailey (born May 8, 1951) is an American R&B, soul, gospel and funk singer, songwriter, percussionist and actor, best known as one of the longtime members of the band Earth, Wind & Fire. Noted for his four octave vocal range and distinctive falsetto register, Bailey has won seven Grammy Awards. He was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame as a member of Earth, Wind & Fire. Bailey was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame for his work with the band. He forms the heart of the current EWF line-up on stage along with Verdine White and Ralph Johnson and recently, Bailey's son, Philip Jr.

    DURAN DURAN - A VIEW TO A KILL (1985) hit #1
A View to a Kill" is the thirteenth single by Duran Duran, released in May 1985.

It was a stand-alone single, created for the James Bond movie A View to a Kill, and it remains the only James Bond theme song to have reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100; it also made it to number 2 for three weeks on the UK Singles Chart. In 1986, John Barry and Duran Duran were nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for A View to a Kill.

The song was the last track that the original five members of Duran Duran recorded together until their reunion sixteen years later, in 2001. It was played at their final 1985 performance together before splitting for the very first time, at Live Aid in Philadelphia. The single was at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 at the time they performed it on that historic event.   The song was written by Duran Duran and John Barry, and recorded at Maison Rouge Studio and CTS Studio in London with a 60-piece orchestra.

Duran Duran were chosen to do the song after bassist John Taylor (a lifelong Bond fan) approached producer Cubby Broccoli at a party, and somewhat drunkenly asked "When are you going to get someone decent to do one of your theme songs?" This inauspicious beginning led to some serious talks, and the band was introduced to Bond composer John Barry, and also Jonathan Elias (whom Duran Duran members would later work with many times). An early writing meeting at Taylor's flat in Knightsbridge led to everyone getting drunk instead of composing.

Singer Simon Le Bon said of Barry: "He didn't really come up with any of the basic musical ideas. He heard what we came up with and he put them into an order. And that's why it happened so quickly because he was able to separate the good ideas from the bad ones, and he arranged them. He has a great way of working brilliant chord arrangements. He was working with us as virtually a sixth member of the group, but not really getting on our backs at all."

The song was finally completed in April 1985, and was released in May 1985, and on July 13 it hit number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, and still currently remains the only Bond theme to do so

ORCHESTRAL MANEUVRES IN THE DARK - SO IN LOVE (1985)
So in Love" is a song by the band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, released in 1985 as the first single of the album Crush. The artwork, designed by XL Design, and the promo video were both influenced by the Mexican Day of the Dead festival.

Although "So in Love" was the first single from Crush, it was one of the last songs written for the album. It was originally dropped until band member Martin Cooper persuaded Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys to make a demo for the song. Andy McCluskey said it was about the painful end of a relationship. It was their first hit in the United States, after five years of trying to "break" in the States.

The first approximately 50,000 copies of the 7" singles were released as a limited edition double-pack in a gatefold sleeve. There were four different 12" singles released, and one of these was also released as a picture disc. The first issue had the normal version of the song on the A-side, with an extended version of "Concrete Hands" on the B-side.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (often abbreviated to OMD or O.M.D. ) are a British New Wave/synthpop group whose founding members are originally from the Wirral Peninsula, England. OMD were originally assimilated in the greater New Wave batch of synthesizer-based acts of the late 1970s/early 1980s.

The group was founded in 1978 by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys who remained, and were perceived as, the core members. Adding sidemen Malcolm Holmes and Martin Cooper by the end of 1980, this quartet (with occasional line-up fluctuations) was the live concert line-up until 1989, when Humphreys, Cooper and Holmes all left OMD to found The Listening Pool. McCluskey then retained the OMD name and continued to record and tour as OMD with new line-ups until 1996.

JAN HAMMER - MIAMI VICE THEME (1985) hit #1
The musical piece Miami Vice Theme was created and performed by Jan Hammer as the theme to the television series Miami Vice. It was first presented as part of the television broadcast of the show in September 1984 and released as a single in 1985, peaking at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. It is the last instrumental to have topped the chart to date. It also peaked at number 5 in the UK. In 1986, it won Grammy Awards for "Best Instrumental Composition" and "Best Pop Instrumental Performance." This song, along with Glenn Frey's number-two hit "You Belong to the City", put the Miami Vice soundtrack on the top of the U.S. album chart for eleven weeks in 1985, making it the most successful TV soundtrack of all time until 2006 when Disney Channel's High School Musical beat its record.
  • The version that aired with the pilot and the following three episodes, which only contains the percussion and keyboards, without the guitars. According to Jan Hammer's manager Elliot Sears, this was the result of the sound elements not being mixed together as Hammer intended.
  • The synthesized-guitar lead version aired with all later episodes.
  • The full radio airplay version, that includes the TV version at the end.
  • An extended dance remix, released in 1985 as a 12" single containing two different length versions (in addition to the original version of the theme).

Miami Vice's pilot episode, made as a two-hour TV movie, did not originally have a theme, but the musical sounds and notation that would become the theme were present as background score. When the series got picked up, Hammer created the sixty second version of the theme. The synth-guitar lead was missing in the aired version of the pilot and the first batch of episodes, and this unfinished version of the theme has remained attached to those episodes, even on the DVD video box set released in 2005.

The theme is also remembered as the song played during the first few three-point competitions at the NBA All-Star Weekend, including the one in 1986 where Larry Bird famously walked into the locker room and told all his competitors they were playing for second place.

PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION - TAKE ME WITH U (1985)
Take Me with U" is a song by Prince and The Revolution, and the final U.S. single released from their album, Purple Rain. It is a pop song notable for the drum solo and finger cymbals that open the song and repeat again toward the end.

The song is sung as a duet with Apollonia Kotero, and was originally intended for the Apollonia 6 album, but was pulled for the Purple Rain soundtrack. A result of this addition, Prince made cuts to the suite-like original "Computer Blue", which circulates amongst collectors in an extended version (a portion of this second section of "Computer Blue" can be heard in the film Purple Rain as Prince walks in on the men of The Revolution rehearsing.) The original version of the song was about a minute longer.

The single was released with an edit of album track "Baby I'm a Star" as its B-side, and reached #25 on the top 40 chart in the U.S. In the UK, the song was issued as a double A-sided single, coupled with "Let's Go Crazy", reaching #7 in February 1985.

Lisa Coleman sang underneath Apollonia's vocals to add fullness

The Revolution was an American rock band formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1979 by Prince. Although widely associated with rock music, the band's sound incorporated heavy metal, pop, funk, R&B and hard rock elements. Before their official break-up, The Revolution had released one studio album, two soundtracks, and two videos. The band is known for its many members, varied in race and gender.

    LIMAHL - NEVERENDING STORY (1985) hit #16
The NeverEnding Story" (titled "The NeverEnding Story (L'histoire sans fin)" in the French version) is the title song from the English version of the 1984 film The NeverEnding Story. The English version was performed by Limahl and Beth Anderson; the French version was performed by Limahl and Ann Calvert. It was a success in many countries, reaching No. 1 Norway and Sweden, No. 2 in Austria, Germany and Italy, No. 4 in the UK and No. 6 in the US Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

The song was composed by Giorgio Moroder with lyrics by Keith Forsey, although it (and other electronic pop elements of the soundtrack) is not present in the German version of the film, which features Klaus Doldinger's score exclusively.

Beth Anderson recorded her lyrics in America separately from Limahl's. Anderson does not appear in the music video; frequent Limahl backup singer Mandy Newton lip syncs Anderson's lyrics.

As a reference to the film and its title, the song has no distinctive beginning, nor an end. While many songs fade out, NeverEnding Story not only fades out, but also fades in, thus making it "never ending".

Christopher Hamill better known by his stage name Limahl (born 19 December 1958) is an English pop singer. He rose to fame as the lead singer of the 1980s pop group Kajagoogoo, before embarking on a briefly successful solo career, which reached its peak with the 1984 hit "The NeverEnding Story", taken from the film of the same name.

CYNDI LAUPER - THE GOONIES R GOOD ENOUGH (1985) hit #10
The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" is a song by American singer Cyndi Lauper. It was released as a single for The Goonies, a 1985 film which was released around the same time as the single. It was her fifth Top 10 single on the Hot 100, her first since "Money Changes Everything".

Before its inclusion on The Essential Cyndi Lauper in 2003, the song never appeared on any of Lauper's albums or the 1994 compilation Twelve Deadly Cyns...and Then Some. Lauper admitted in an interview with Matthew Rettenmund that she hated the song, which was why she had chosen not to include it on her first compilation. All versions of the UK edition are considered rare, especially the 12".

Steven Spielberg had made Cyndi the musical director for The Goonies soundtrack. She sought out new bands to be included on the project including her friends, The Bangles.

The official title of the song is just "Good Enough", as is the way Cyndi had titled it when it was written and the way she announced it at concerts. She never said the 'new' title, "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough", at any concert. It was changed, only in name, because Warner Brothers Studio insisted that the marketing pointed towards the film and that is when "The Goonies 'R'" was tacked on to the title of the song.

There was also a two-part video shot for this song featuring World Wrestling Federation pro-wrestlers André the Giant, Captain Lou Albano, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Wendy Richter, The Fabulous Moolah, The Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, Freddie Blassie; Steven Spielberg; David Wolffe (Lauper's manager); The Goonies cast (except for Kerri Green, Anne Ramsey, Joe Pantoliano, Robert Davi and John Matuszak); and the then relatively unknown Bangles as a group of female pirates. Lauper's mother appears as "Cyndi's mother" and the "sea hag".

ERIC CLAPTON - FOREVER MAN (1985) hit #26

Album:  Behind The Sun (1985)

I bought this album brand new at age 14 and I saw Eric Clapton in concert in Saskatoon in 1988

Forever Man" is a rock song from Eric Clapton's 1985 album Behind the Sun, released as the first single of the album. It reached number one on the Billboard Top Rock Tracks chart, becoming his second single to do so.

Clapton had just signed a contract with Warner Bros Records when he started recording Behind the Sun. When the album was completed, the record company rejected it because they felt it did not have enough singles. They commissioned three songs by Texas composer Jerry Lynn Williams, one of which was "Forever Man".

Behind the Sun is the ninth album by English guitarist Eric Clapton, released in 1985. The title of the album comes from a line from Albert King's "Louisiana Blues". It is also Clapton's first collaborative project with Phil Collins. Often referred to as his "comeback album", it was received very well in both the UK and the US.

After nearly a decade of Clapton's guitar playing taking a back seat to his singing/songwriting, this album featured more guitar work by Clapton since the Cream era of the 1960s. The album features synthesizers and drum machines played by Phil Collins, Ted Templeman, Peter Robinson, Michael Omartian, James Newton Howard, Chris Stainton and Greg Phillinganes, as well as Clapton's Roland guitar synthesizer on the 9th track, Never Make You Cry. Bassists Donald Duck Dunn from Booker T. & the MG's and Nathan East from the smooth jazz quartet Fourplay also played on the sessions.
