BOY KRAZY - THAT'S WHAT LOVE CAN DO (1993)

Album: Boy Krazy (1993)

June 21st 1993 - this song holds the record for being my favorite #1 song longer than any other during my lifetime. It was my favorite song for 408 days in a row which is longer than an entire year. However there was a catch to this. At the time I left home and went travelling on the road full time as a professional touring musician and I simply stopped listening to the music I really liked and more importantly stopped documenting my favorite songs. However I truly loved the song and to this date this is one of the catchiest perfect pop songs ever. Its something I could almost imagine Abba may have released if they were around at the time. The song features the craftsmanship of Stock Aitken and Waterman team that made the Rick Astley sound. It is the same sound but this time with 4 female singers!

"That's What Love Can Do" is a hit song by American female pop group Boy Krazy. The song was produced by British hitmaking team Stock Aitken & Waterman, and first released in 1991 as Boy Krazy's debut single. Lead vocals were performed by group member Johnna Cummings. This was the only single in which group member Renée Veneziale would be involved in, leaving the band in 1991 soon after its release. The song did not become a hit, peaking at #86 in the UK. At the end of 1992, the song became successful in North American nightclubs, and radio airplay soon followed, prompting a re-release in early 1993. For this reissue, the song was remixed (the radio edit being an edit of the Hot Tracks remix, which was popular at nightclubs). The song was a success this time round, becoming the group's signature song, and peaking at #18 in the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached #1 in Pop airplay on the Radio & Records CHR/Pop chart, and #2 on the Top 40 Mainstream chart. In the UK it was still not a big hit, peaking at #80
    WHITNEY HOUSTON - I'M EVERY WOMAN (1993) hit #4
"I'm Every Woman" is a hit song recorded by Chaka Khan in 1978. It was Chaka Khan's first hit outside of her recordings with funk band Rufus; the song was included on her platinum debut solo album Chaka. Produced by Arif Mardin and written by successful songwriting team Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, the soul/disco song reached number twenty-one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, number eleven on the UK Singles Chart and hit number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs

Whitney Houston recorded the song for The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album. Houston's version was produced by Narada Michael Walden, with additional production by David Cole and Robert Clivillés. It was released as the soundtrack's second single in January 1993.

When "I'm Every Woman" was released, Houston's preceding single, "I Will Always Love You", was still at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 (it remained there for eight more weeks). Houston's version of "I'm Every Woman" would become a bigger hit than the original, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in just its seventh and eighth week of release; remaining in the top 40 for nineteen weeks. The song became number one on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, reached number five on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and cracked the top 40 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart. Houston's cover was also a bigger international hit than the original version as it peaked within the top 5 in the UK and several other countries, and the top 20 in France, Australia, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland.   As a tribute to Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston proclaims Khan's name towards the end of the song.

The music video was directed by Randee St. Nicholas, and features a very pregnant Houston performing the song, while scenes from The Bodyguard are intercut into the clip. The video also features cameo appearances by Cissy Houston (Houston's mother), as well as by Chaka Khan, Valerie Simpson, and labelmates TLC. The song won Houston a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Music Video, and received a Grammy Award nomination in 1994 for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.

DURAN DURAN - ORDINARY WORLD (1993) hit #3
Ordinary World" is the first single from Duran Duran's self-titled 1993 album, better known as The Wedding Album. The song peaked at No. 3 in the American charts and No. 6 in the British charts. Simon LeBon, the vocalist, later sang this song with Luciano Pavarotti, to help children affected by war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

By the early '90s, Duran Duran's popularity had faded. Their album Liberty had proved a commercial failure, its two singles failing to make a significant showing on British or American charts.

It wasn't until Capitol leaked "Ordinary World" to a radio station in Florida in the autumn of 1992 that it looked like Duran Duran mania might yet hit again. The single proved so popular that Capitol had to push the US release date up, ultimately releasing it in December. In the UK, the original January release date stood. The song can be credited as introducing Duran Duran to a new generation of fans.

Simon LeBon would go on to sing the song with Pavarotti at a WarChild benefit, which was released on home video as Pavarotti & Friends: Together for the Children of Bosnia. Le Bon later said of the event, "If you're talking about name dropping, he's one of the biggest names you could drop, Pav-The-Man."

The keyboards in the song were arranged and performed by Nick Rhodes John Jones and Welsh session musician Matt Thomas. The Drums were played by Steve Ferrone at Maison Rouge.

The guitar solo that characterizes this song was arranged and performed by Warren Cuccurullo, former player with Frank Zappa. His instrumental rock trio version became a staple of his solo shows and was included on Road Rage, one of his solo albums.   The song won an Ivor Novello Award in May 1994 and later featured in the soundtrack to the film Layer Cake in 2005.

    WHITNEY HOUSTON - I HAVE NOTHING (1993) hit #4
I Have Nothing" is a song by American singer Whitney Houston and released as the third single from The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album on February 20, 1993 by Arista Records. The song was written by David Foster and Linda Thompson, and produced by Foster. The song is a richly orchestrated power ballad about deep love and commitment to one's lover.

After the back-to-back successes of Houston's "I Will Always Love You" and "I'm Every Woman", "I Have Nothing" became yet another hit, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and being certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The song also became a hit on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart, with a number four peak, and a number-one peak on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. Houston established another historic milestone in Billboard chart history with the two previous singles off the soundtrack and this song, becoming the first artist to have three songs inside the top 11 of the Hot 100 chart in the same week since the chart began using Broadcast Data System and SoundScan data in 1991. Internationally, the song reached the number one in Canada, the top five in Ireland and the United Kingdom, and peaked within the top forty in Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Switzerland. It received various nominations, including for Best Original Song at the 1993 Academy Awards, for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television at the 36th Grammy Awards of 1994, and for Best R&B Single, Female at the 1994 Soul Train Music Awards.

As of most of Houston's material, the song has been an extremely popular choice on many reality television series around the world, in particular American Idol, on which it has become one of the most performed songs ever, having been covered six times since 2003.

"I Have Nothing" was nominated for Best Original Song at the 65th Annual Academy Awards on March 29, 1993. David Foster and Linda Thompson were nominated for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media for the song at the 36th Annual Grammy Awards on March 1, 1994. The song was also nominated for Best R&B Single, Female but lost to Toni Braxton's "Breathe Again" at the 8th Annual Soul Train Music Awards on March 15, 1994. Foster and Thompson received the award for Most Performed Song from a Film for the song at the 10th BMI Film & Television Awards on May 17, 1994

    JODECI - LATELY (1993) hit #4
Lately" is a song by American singer Stevie Wonder recorded for his album Hotter than July (1981). The song was notably covered by R&B group Jodeci and released as a promotional single for the live album Uptown MTV Unplugged in June 1993.

"Lately" was notably covered by R&B group Jodeci for the Uptown MTV Unplugged release in 1993. The group's version of the song was released as a promotional single, claiming the number one spot on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks charts as the group's fourth R&B number one hit. It was also Jodeci's highest peaking pop hit, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100.

Jodeci (sometimes stylized as JoDeCi) is an American band, whose repertoire includes R&B, soul music, and new jack swing. The group consists of two pairs of brothers from Hampton, Virginia and Charlotte, North Carolina: Cedric & Joel Hailey and Donald & Dalvin DeGrate, all respectively known by their stage names: K-Ci & Jojo, DeVante Swing and Mr. Dalvin. The group's name is a combination of the names from the three original members: Jo-Jo, DeVante, and K-Ci.

The group had a successful string of hit singles and platinum albums until the group went on hiatus after 1998. The Hailey brothers continued to perform together under the pseudonym K-Ci & JoJo, and had success on the pop charts beyond that of the original band. In 2009, the group rebanded for H-Town's song, "Knockin' Your Heels

    TLC - HAT 2 DA BACK (1993) hit #30

Hat 2 Da Back" is TLC's fourth and final single from their debut album, Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip. The song reached #30 on the Billboard Hot 100, while reaching #14 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks. The song is about the girls' fashion sense. They like to wear their hats to the back (instead of the front) and their pants low, showing that the way they dress represents who they are.

TLC is an American musical trio whose repertoire spanned R&B, hip hop, soul, funk, and new jack swing. Originally consisting of singer Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, rapper Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and singer Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, they found success in the 1990s while also enduring a series of spats with the law, each other, and the group's record label.

Initially, TLC achieved commercial success following the release of their debut album Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip, which sold four million copies worldwide. Their second studio album, CrazySexyCool, went on to be certified diamond by the RIAA, and eventually sold 22 million copies worldwide. TLC released four multi-platinum studio albums before going on hiatus due to the death of Lopes in Honduras in 2002.

Billboard magazine ranked TLC as one of the greatest musical trios Between 1992 and 2003, the band accumulated ten top ten singles, four number one singles, four multi-platinum albums, and four Grammy Awards. At the end of 1999, TLC was ranked as the seventh most successful act of the 1990s by Billboard. In 2008, the group was inducted into the All Time Hot 100 Artist Hall of Fame by the same magazine, at 56th place. That year it was also listed as the #25 R&B/hip-hop artist of the preceding 25 years.

TLC has sold more than 50 million records worldwide, and are ranked as the second best selling female group, and the best selling female R&B group of all time.

CAPTAIN HOLLYWOOD - MORE AND MORE (1993) hit #17
More and More" is the title of a song recorded by German eurodance act Captain Hollywood Project. The lead vocal on the track is sung by Nina Gerhard. The first single from his debut album Love Is Not Sex, this dance song was a hit in several countries, particularly in Germany, where it reached number-one for eight weeks. The single was released in July 1992, and was also a crossover pop hit in the U.S., where it reached number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June of 1993. The song remained in the Top 40 for 12 weeks and, to date, it is Captain Hollywood Project's only pop hit in the U.S. The song is currently the 99th best-selling single of all time in Germany.

A remix of this track is included in Offer Nissim's Happy People Album (2008).

The track was the theme song for the first sketch featuring The Roxbury Guys on Saturday Night Live.[2] All subsequent editions of the sketch used Haddaway's "What Is Love."

Captain Hollywood Project is a German eurodance project fronted by Tony Dawson Harrison.

Harrison, a United States Army captain, was nicknamed Captain Hollywood, because he danced even when in uniform. He first started in the break dance scene in Europe as he performed on early '80s music TV shows such as Formel Eins. He was featured in German cult movies and represented Germany at the Cannes Film Festival for the premier of the break dance movie Beat Street. From 1985 to 1987 Tony started producing his own music, releasing his first 3 singles and an album as Captain Hollywood. During this time he also collaborated with C.C. Catch as her back up singer, rapper, and dancer.

SOUL SYSTEM - ITS GONNA BE A LOVELY DAY (1993) hit #30
Lovely Day" is a song by American soul and R&B singer Bill Withers. Published in 1977, the song was written by Withers and Skip Scarborough and appears on Withers' 1978 album Menagerie.

Released as a single in late 1977, "Lovely Day" peaked at #6 on the Billboard R&B chart and at #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US in early 1978. It also made the Top 10 in the United Kingdom, where the song reached #7 on the British single chart.

One of the more notable versions of this song was performed by The S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M. featuring Michelle Visage and was included on the Whitney Houston's soundtrack to the 1992 film The Bodyguard. This mostly rap version was titled "It's Gonna Be a Lovely Day", and it reached #34 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #44 on the Billboard R&B chart, in addition to spending three weeks atop the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in December 1992 and January 1993. This version also reached #16 on the UK Singles Chart

The S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M. was an American 1990s R&B and dance music group, assembled by Robert Clivillés and David Cole of C&C Music Factory. The group featured lead vocals by Michelle Visage, who was formerly a member of another Clivilles & Cole group, Seduction (whose debut CD, Nothing Matters Without Love, had been produced by Clivilles & Cole in 1989). Other primary members included Octavia Lambertis (often credited simply as Octavia or Octahvia) and Cindy Mizelle, both of whom had moderately successful solo careers in the 1980s. Other band members included Gary Michael Wade and Jamal Alicea. The S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M. produced one hit single, a rap version of a 1978 Bill Withers song "Lovely Day." This song, retitled "It's Gonna Be A Lovely Day," appeared on the 1992 film soundtrack, The Bodyguard. It reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, and peaked at number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100, and at number 16 in the UK Singles Chart in 1993. The song "It's Gonna be a Lovely Day" was the only song on the soundtrack performed by an artist other than Whitney Houston released as a single in the U.S.

BON JOVI - BED OF ROSES (1993) hit #3
Bed of Roses" is a rock song released by Bon Jovi in late January 1993, from the album Keep the Faith. Jon Bon Jovi wrote the song in a hotel room while suffering from a hangover and the lyrics reflects his feelings at the time. The song contains drawn out guitar riffs and soft piano playing, along with emotive and high vocals by Jon Bon Jovi.

The song's power ballad style made it a worldwide hit, and it demonstrated the band's new, more mature sound after their success as a glam metal band in the '80s. Released as a successful single in 1993, it reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100, #5 on the top 40 mainstream, #13 in the UK Top 40, and #10 in the German Top 100.

Bon Jovi is an American rock band from Sayreville, New Jersey. Formed in 1983, Bon Jovi consists of lead singer and namesake Jon Bon Jovi (John Francis Bongiovi, Jr.), guitarist Richie Sambora, keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, as well as current bassist Hugh McDonald.[1] The band's lineup has remained mostly static during their history, the only exception being the departure of Alec John Such in 1994, who was unofficially replaced by Hugh McDonald. The band became known for writing several rock anthems and achieved widespread recognition with their third album, Slippery When Wet, released in 1986. After touring and recording non-stop during the late 1980s, the band went on hiatus after the New Jersey Tour in 1990, during which time Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora both released successful solo albums. In 1992, the band returned with the album Keep the Faith. Their 2000 single "It's My Life", which followed a second hiatus, successfully introduced the band to a younger audience. Bon Jovi has been known to use different styles in their music, which has included country for their 2007 album Lost Highway. Their latest album, The Circle, was released on November 10, 2009 in the United States.

HADDAWAY - WHAT IS LOVE (1993)
What Is Love" is the title of a song recorded by Eurodance artist Haddaway. It was written and produced by Dee Dee Halligan (Tony Hendrik/Dieter Lünstedt) and Junior Torello (Karin Hartman-Eisenblätter) of Coconut Records in Cologne. Recorded in the early 1990's, it later experienced a revival as the song from the Saturday Night Live "Roxbury Guys" sketches, where two brothers played by Chris Kattan and Will Ferrell frequently went to dance clubs with a third person (including actors such as Sylvester Stallone and Jim Carrey), credited as "Barhop". These sketches were later made into the 1998 feature film A Night at the Roxbury but the "Barhop" role was dropped during the production of the film. The song itself and "A Night at the Roxbury" would later become a meme on YTMND.

The song peaked at number two in the United Kingdom and Germany, but it reached number one in 13 other countries, all of them European or Asian. The song reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and number 12 in Australia. The song is currently the 75th best-selling single of all time in Germany.   The song was used in a 2011 TV advertising campaign for British clothing retailer Next, pushing it into the UK iTunes Store chart top 100.

In Germany, the single sold 900,000 copies, in the UK, it was certified Gold for shipment of 400,000 units. It later reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold for shipments of 500,000 units. By the beginning of 1994, worldwide sales of "What Is Love" had already reached 2.6 million

    R.E.M. - MAN ON THE MOON (1993) hit #30
Man on the Moon" is a song by the American alternative rock band R.E.M., released as the second single from their 1992 album Automatic for the People. The song was well received by critics and peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 18 on the UK Singles Chart. It remains one of R.E.M.'s most popular songs and was included on the compilations In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988–2003 and Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982–2011.

Lyrically, the song is a tribute to the performer Andy Kaufman with numerous references to Kaufman's career including Elvis impersonation, wrestling, and the film My Breakfast with Blassie. The song's title and chorus refer to the moon landing conspiracy theories as an oblique allusion to rumors that Kaufman's 1984 death was faked. The song gave its name to a 1999 film based on Kaufman's life, Man on the Moon, and was used in the film's soundtrack.

Man on the Moon" was released as the second single from Automatic for the People on November 21, 1992, reaching number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 18 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was enthusiastically received by critics. Writing for the New York Times, Ann Powers said it "shines with a wit that balances R.E.M.'s somber tendencies." Stewart Mason went even further in his review for Allmusic, calling the song "near-perfect", "almost inarguably Stipe's pinnacle as a singer", and "one of R.E.M.'s most enduring achievements". The song was listed at number 19 on the Village Voice "Pazz & Jop" year-end critics' poll in 1993

    R.E.M. - EVERYBODY HURTS (1993) hit #29
Everybody Hurts" is a song by R.E.M., originally released on the band's 1992 album Automatic for the People and was also released as a single in 1993. It peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 3 on the French Singles Chart.

Much of the song was written by drummer Bill Berry, although as R.E.M. shares songwriting credits among its members, it is unknown how much he actually wrote. Berry did not drum on the song—a Univox drum machine took his place—but he was responsible for the sampling of the drum pattern on the track. The string arrangement was written by Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones.

Guitarist Peter Buck commented on the making of the track saying "'Everybody Hurts' is similar to 'Man on the Moon'. Bill brought it in, and it was a one-minute long country-and-western song. It didn't have a chorus or a bridge. It had the verse . . . it kind of went around and around, and he was strumming it. We went through about four different ideas and how to approach it and eventually came to that Stax, Otis Redding, "Pain in My Heart" kind of vibe. I'm not sure if Michael would have copped that reference, but to a lot of our fans it was a Staxxy-type thing. It took us forever to figure out the arrangement and who was going to play what, and then Bill ended up not playing on the original track. It was me and Mike and a drum machine. And then we all overdubbed."

In the liner notes of the album In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988–2003, Buck writes that "the reason the lyrics are so atypically straightforward is because it was aimed at teenagers", and "I've never watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but the idea that high school is a portal to hell seems pretty realistic to me." Incidentally, the song was used in the 1992 film of the same name that preceded the show.

WHITNEY HOUSTON - RUN TO YOU (1993)  hit #31

Album:  The Bodyguard soundtrack (1992)

Run to You" is a song performed by Whitney Houston and is the fourth single released from The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album.   "Run to You" was written by Jud Friedman and Allan Rich. Originally intended to be a break-up song, it was approved by the production and stars. However, a month later, the director of The Bodyguard (Mick Jackson) called, saying he liked the song so much, but he'd rather have it to be a love song so the entire song was rewritten, except for the title.   All of the previous releases from The Bodyguard had been successes, landing in the top five. "Run to You" became a moderate hit, peaking at number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the U.S., it spent six weeks inside the top 40, five of which were spent at the number 31 peak. Airplay and singles sales topped out at number 26 and 41, respectively. The single sales stalled at number 41 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart, most likely due to the fact its parent album, The Bodyguard, already was certified 8× platinum and nearing 9× platinum status quickly. Single sales were moderate because most consumers already owned the song by simply owning the album.
    JANET JACKSON - AGAIN (1993) hit #1
Again" is a song by American singer Janet Jackson from her fifth studio album, janet. (1993). Written and produced by Jackson, James Harris III, and Terry Lewis, the ballad was released as the album's third single in October 1993. "Again" topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in late 1993 and received nominations for the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Based on a lost love, "Again" was included as the closing song to her 1993 box-office film debut in Poetic Justice. While not included on its soundtrack album, the song was nominated for Best Original Song at the 66th Academy Awards, where Jackson performed the song live. The janet. jazz-funky track "Funky Big Band" appears on the single as a B-side. A French version of the song was also recorded by Jackson and appears on the CD single as well as the limited edition of the janet. album. The track became her seventh number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, staying atop for two weeks.

Since its release, Jackson has performed the song on all of her tours, including the janet. Tour, The Velvet Rope Tour, All for You Tour, Rock Witchu Tour, and the Number Ones: Up Close and Personal tour where it was dedicated to Phoenix, Ariz and Oslo, Norway. She also performed it on the season 9 finale of American Idol.

    JANET JACKSON - IF (1993) hit #4
If" is a song by American recording artist Janet Jackson from her fifth studio album, janet. (1993). Written and produced by Jackson and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, it was released as the album's second single in July 1993, and became Jackson's second top five hit from the janet. album.

"If" deals with a female narrator's fantasies of being someone's girlfriend. The track contains a sample from Diana Ross & the Supremes' 1969 song "Someday We'll Be Together", and is built on a heavy metal guitar riff heard throughout the song. The combination of heavy hip hop/new jack swing beats with an electric guitar and a trip hop sound was a relative departure in sound for Jackson, and an extension of styles she developed on her previous album, Rhythm Nation 1814. A remix of "If" entitled Brothers in Rhythm House Mix appears on Jackson's 1995 remix album janet. Remixed. The single contains a B-side called "One More Chance", a cover of a song her brother Randy wrote, produced, and performed for The Jacksons' 1984 Victory album.

"If" is set in the signature of common time and is written in key of E minor. It has a moderate tempo and a basic chord progression of Em—C/E—D.
