TERRY ALLEN HOKNES (born January 15th 1971 in Saskatoon SK Canada)

THE RECORDERS (1981-1982)   Terry became a Beatles fanatic at age 9 and created a pretend recording band singing along with Beatles records.  Recordings exist which are Terry Hoknes and sister Leslie Hoknes singing along with Beatles records.   Ficticious album covers were designed by Terry for a make believe band cloning original Beatles albums.   The band also included Terry's friends Zender Millar (born 1969), David Magnussen, Jay Edmunds and Aaron Holowaychuk.   Terry, Leslie and Zender performed actual live concerts in front of family members in their home.  Terry made his first public performance singing the Stars on 45 (15 minute) Beatles medley to a group of about 30 University students in the summer of 1981.    Terry hoped to become a real rock star hitting it big at a younger age than Stevie Wonder had 20 years earlier.   Terry began writing songs in May 1982 at age 11.

PLASTIC TARGET (1983-1984)  Terry had now taken guitar, piano, vocal, bass and drum lessons and started to make recordings with his best friend Zender Millar as a duo performing all the vocals and instruments themselves including covers of their favorite songs:   Recordings exist of all the songs including Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin, Mary Hopkin, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly etc.   Terry did his first multi-tracking instruments in January 1984 at age 13 with an instrumental version of Karma Chameleon by Culture Club where he played 6 parts by recording back and forth between two tape decks.

DOC ROCK & KRAUSS (1986-1990) Terry Hoknes taught his high school best friend Nels Krauss how to play the bass guitar which led a 4 year period of jamming together, writing songs together and recording sessions.   As a duo they wrote 60 songs together and they rented 4-tracks from St Johns and HEL Music to record songs in 1989-1990.  These recordings all exist and are found online.  Terry played numerous instruments on the recordings and re-recorded 13 of their best songs in 2012 for his 60 Songs in 60 Days recording project.

APPLE JAM (1987)  Terry Hoknes on bass guitar joined Zender Millar (guitar) and Curtis ?? (drums) for a series of jam sessions in the back of the laundromat on 4th Avenue and 24th Street.

THE KISS OF JAZZ (1989)  Terry Hoknes studied in a jazz improv class held by pianist/composer Bill Richards at the U of S and teamed up with numerous classmates for a series of jazz improv jams at Terry's home at 410 Ruth Street that year and recorded a few of the songs which featured Terry Hoknes (piano, Kim Hawke (trumpet), Kevin Macza (bass guitar), and ??????

6 ALE ON A WEDNESDAY (1990) Terry Hoknes was asked to join a Humboldt band that were hired to perform at a dinner theatre performing classic British rock songs and Terry performed bass guitar and backup vocals in a 5 piece band in Humboldt where they performed 2 shows at the Humboldt Inn in the spring of 1990 while Terry was attending St Peters College in Muenster, SK for 1st year University.   Recordings exist including songs by Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc.

THE SMOKING CRAWDADS (1990-1991) Terry Hoknes (bass, vocals) joined as the new member to a punk/alternative/60's rock inspired cover band led by Mark Rogstad (vocal, guitar), Gerard Saretsky (vocal, lead gtr), Jed Evans (drums).   They performed shows in Saskatoon, Regina and Muenster, SK over a 10 month period.   Their first gigs were at Amigos opening for bands like Martyr Bones and The Vexations.  Board tape of our first gig exists.   Terry began to grow his hair long for the first time.  He played his bass so hard that at one gig he broke 2 of his bass strings and bled all over his bass.  The band played an odd mix of covers from The Byrds to the Spiderman theme.   Elvis Costello, Violent Femmes.   Mark sang lead on most while Gerard sang a 1/3 and Terry sang lead on at least 3 songs including White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane), I've Got To Keep On Pushing (Human Beinz 1968), Let Me (Paul Revere & The Raiders 1969), The Ballad Of The Red Balloon (Hoknes original).    Performed a original band festival in Regina in spring 1991.  23 Below also performed at least 1 show.  Played a christmas concert at St Peters College in Muenster, SK where both Mark and Terry had previously attended?

BLACKBERRY WAY (1991) 3 of the 4 members of The Smoking Crawdads wanted to focus less on a punk/alternative sound and go more for a 60's retro style so the band (minus Mark Rogstad) continued on and performed throughout Saskatoon for 5 months performing everywhere we could find a gig.    The band recorded a 7 song album on 2 track reel to reel owned by Hoknes and released the album in July 1991 and received heavy major airplay on CFCR 90.5 FM and was the 2nd most played Canadian content album of the year on the station (behind The Crash Test Dummies).   The band performed a self-financed show The Bassment on 3rd Avenue headlining with Glen Royer & Greenhouse and Mark Kleiner's band from Vancouver.   Hoknes and Kleiner had been in the same grade and had next door lockers in Grade 9 at Aden Bowman 1984-1985.   The band Blackberry Way was named after the #1 UK 1969 hit by Hoknes' idol Roy Wood and The Move.    The album was released on cassette only printed by Don Warkentin.  At that time blank CD-R's cost $20.00 so it was decided impossible to make money selling CD's at this time.   The band received lots of promo ads from CFCR and the band did cross promo with the station for a couple shows.   The band's last performance was in Sept 1991 live at Records On Wheels at that time located on 2nd Ave & 23rd St just south of the King George Hotel.  The band performed a set in the music store to promote their album.  After the gig Gerard Saretsky closed the back of his stationwagon and smashed his guitar case through the back window.   The band set lists included about 20% originals songs by Saretsky and Hoknes.   A couple demo's exist besides the album which Hoknes remixed in 2012 and posted all the tracks online with the 20 photo's taken that year in a photo shoot near the old Traffic Bridge on Victoria.  Photo's taken by Hoknes' sister Leslie Hoknes.   Terry would use his connections at CFCR 90.5 FM to pitch a new radio station which he began that December called History Lesson where one hour a week he taught the history of rock/pop music one year per show covering 1940-1992 over the course of the next 20 months.  These shows all exist.

DOC ROCK AND THE FAR SIDE (1991-1992)  After the disbanding of Blackberry Way Terry happened to bump into fellow highschool mate Keith Read on a bus on Broadway and got to talking which led to them forming a duo where they planned to play a wide variety of songs from Neil Young to Jimi Hendrix to The Moody Blues.     A set list of about 40 songs was planned but they never did play any official gigs.   In February Keith took Terry Hoknes to meet his brother Kelly Read and Doug Bodie hosting the jams at Morleys on 22nd Street which led to a new band.   That spring Hoknes and Read submitted a Read original to the Cityworks CD compilation and it was recorded and included on the 1992 edition that summer.  The song How Come No Smiles was first recorded as a demo before being recorded at Audio Art upstairs on Broadway.  The song was re-arranged and re-worked while in the studio and the song which had an 8 hour limit landed up taking 21 hours of studio time to complete with Keith Read (lead vocal, guitar), Terry Hoknes (back vocal, bass, keyboards), Curtis Scarrow (lead gtr), Kelly Read (back vocals).  Not sure if the drums were played by Keith or were sequenced/drum machine.   The band was invited to perform at Band Wars held at the Sutherland Bar that summer.  Keith would play with Terry Hoknes over the years in both Whats His Name And The Other Guys and in Marilyn Faye Parney and in The Secretions.   Together they hosted some jams at the Riviera Club Hotel just south of 42nd St(Circle Dr) between July and Dec 1994.

WHAT'S HIS NAME AND THE OTHER GUYS (1992-1993)  Keith Read introduced Terry Hoknes to Kelly Read and Doug Bodie running the jam at Morleys on 22nd Street and after jamming on his double bass Hoknes was asked to join the band the very same day and the band was officially formed.  Rehearsals took place at Doug Bodie's home on Winnipeg Ave.   The band performed a unique mix of new country, old bluegrass and some classic rock/pop tunes.   Kelly Read (lead voc, acoustic, harp), Doug Bodie  (lead voc, electric gtr, mandolin), Keith Read (drums, vocals, banjo), Terry Hoknes (double bass, bass guitar, keyboards using a Roland sound canvass bought at HEL Music which had amazing piano sounds).   The band performed throughout Saskatchewan playing numerous small town bars and dances.   A few times in Kindersley, Swift Current?, Saskatoon at the Union Centre, Morleys, Stan's Place, Crazy Cactus, 19th Street Legion  (many shows including the day the sewers backed up and flooded the basement).  Performed New Years Eve 1992 upstairs at the 19th Street Legion.  Kelly Read was not present that one show and replaced by ?  (accordion, bass?)     While Kelly Read hosted the jams at Morleys on 22nd Street, Doug Bodie with his son and also Terry Hoknes hosted the jams each week at Morleys in Sutherland.       At the peak of Achy Breaky Heart in late 1992 Kelly Read sang the song 3 times in one night in possibly Kindersley.   The band ended when Terry Hoknes moved on to tour with Marilyn Faye Parney in July 1993.   The band performed at the outdoor country music festival in June 1993 at Watrous, Sk.  Hoknes was introduced to Marilyn Faye Parney who also performed that day.

THE SHADE (1992-1993)  Terry Hoknes was in 3rd Year University at SK and he was not currently playing with anyone so found a posted ad at the University tunnel for a singer needed for a new rock band so Terry planned to audition.  It was the very same week Keith Read had introduced Terry to the boys that would form Whats His Name And The Other Guys.  Terry passed the audition for The Shade and landed up joining two bands in the very same week.    Best friends Kevin Buzinski (drums) and Robert Ford (bass) made up the rest of the trio.   A friend of theirs Corey ??? played guitar on a couple of the bands early gigs including one at STM at the University for a talent show??     The band performed shows throughout Saskatoon including Amigos, Band Warz at Rylys, and numerous show at Sammy's Grape Escape (8th Street and Louise).  One show we performed there they told us the band would be paid by how many people showed up at the door so they gave us passes to hand out.  Before the gig we stood out on 8th street handing out passes but the club didnt like that and told they would stop.   One night playing our regular show a trendy girl came up to the stage handing a note to Terry Hoknes which read "do you know any fucking real music?"     Unfortunately we were playing our eclectic mix of music from REM, The Cult, 60's psych like Blues Magoos, Spirit, Glass Family, Klaatu and the patrons of the club were listening to the DJ play trendy new top 40 music like DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince on our breaks.    In the spring of 1993 Terry Hoknes spent $2500.00 on a new 8 track Tascam recorder at HEL Music and proceeded to have the band record an album of 7 originals with songs written individually by all members of the trio with influences from The Beatles to punk rock.    The band ended when Terry Hoknes moved on to tour with Marilyn Faye Parney in July 1993.

MARILYN FAYE PARNEY (1993-2004)    Terry Hoknes was introduced by his best friend Brett Brissaw to country singer Marilyn at the outdoor country music festival in Watrous, SK In June 1993.   Brett had played drums with Marilyn for the past year with Doug Hergott (guitar).  Some members of her band had formed a new one so she was looking to put a new lineup together so Hoknes decided to join when she said her goal was to tour Europe.  Hoknes quit University, his job at Collectors Edge, his radio show History Lesson and his two bands The Shade and Whats His Name And The Other Guys to go on the road full time touring for the first time and make better money and see the country (age 22).  The initial lineup at rehearsals in July 1993 were Terry Hoknes (bass), Dean Kaplan (keyboards), Brett Brissaw (drums),  Jerry ?, Al ?.  Rehearsals were held for 2 months at Marilyn's cousins Gord Moyer's home on 33rd Street.   By the time our first gig happened in Oct 2nd 1993 the lineup had changed and the first gig was Parney, Hoknes, Kaplan, Mike Schafer (guitar), Tom Cunningham (drums).  Terry Alward (sound) would join us on the road for 3 months.  He had previously toured with her former band.  Dennis Ficor of Regina joined off and on for the next 5 months playing fiddle, guitar, vocals.   Schafer and Cunningham left the band after the first month on the road.  Brett Brissaw rejoined full time on drums for the next 5 months.  The band toured north Alberta and up into Yellowknife.   After bringing his pet pot belly big on the road Terry Alward finished as sound man at Xmas 1993.  Jamie Peever (sound) joined us for our New Years Gig week show at Shotgun Willies at Cranbrook.  Mike Schafer rejoined the band just for this week as well.  Billy Ray Houston from Edmonton joined us full time for all of 1994.  His friend Rob joined us on drums for one gig in Rocky Mountain House at David Thompson Hotel replacing Brett Brissaw who was in the hospital with kidney stones.   Religious Blair ?? joined the band for the next week filling in for Brissaw still in the hospital.  Brissaw rejoined for our show at Dusty's in Calgary.  This was our last show with Dean Kaplan on keyboards and with soundman Jamie Peever (late Jan 1994).   The band had a month off in Feb and we came up with a new lineup of players including Eric ? (bass) and Jerry ? who played two weeks with teh band at the Tamarack in Rocky Mountain Huose and at the Texas Bull in Edmonton.   Dennis Ficor rejoined the band for Drifters in Bonneyville in March 1994 and the next week at Riders in Lloydminster both Ficor and Brett Brissaw departed for the last time.   Brissaw asked to dance with Marilyn on stage while she sang her ballad Paradise.  George ? (keyboards) and Mike Michael Michetti joined the band in late March 1994 at the Royal Hotel in Stettler.   George liked to sleep around on the road and Michetti decided to be a bully to Hoknes so the band was an unusual pairing at this time as they performed at Stoney Plain, Tamarack in Rocky Mountain House and Drifters in Bonneyville.   Hoknes liked to pull practical jokes on George.  George left the group at the end of April 1994.    At the time Kurt Cobain killed himself the band was now performing at Sundrey Motor Inn in Sundrey, AB, and the Neon Moon in Edmonton.  Von 403-447-3671 at #308 West Crescent Edmonton joined the band on May 12th at this gig.  He stuck around for Texas Bull in Edmonton, Esquimalt Inn in Victoria and Gabbey's in Langley.   While in Victoria Hoknes went for a long walk along the ocean and might have caught pneumonia late at night as the next week in Langley he had lost his voice for the first time ever and sounded terrible when he tried to sing Old Time Rock And Roll.  The management of Gabbey's were unhappy with the band as they expected the touring bands that played their to be totally contemporary and able to play the hottest songs in that very week's top 10 which the band did not have prepared.  So after one night the band was let go while Hoknes was sick and the band travelled home after performing June 30th 1994.  Von and Michael Michetti both departed after this gig.   Hoknes went home and had his first breathing problems where he gasped for hair.  This is a problem that would happen more often to him a decade later.  The band had a month off before touring closer to him now with Parney, Hoknes (switching to keyboards and eventually sequencing), Billy Ray Houston (guitar) and Craig Robertson (403-464-1578) 227 Graham Place Sherwood Park AB (drums).  July 1994 saw the new 4 piece perform at the Vermillion Hotel, Deputys at the Madisson Hotel in Prince Albert, and Hooters/Copperbelt Hotel in Creighton SK.   These were all 6 nighter week long gigs.    The lineup also performed at the Royal in Moose Jaw, Brooks Hotel, Ivan Daines Picnic in Innisfield and finally Sawridge/Ridge Saloon in Slave Lake in Aug 1994 which was the last gig with this lineup before Houston and Robertson departed.    A new lineup was put together for a one nighter at the Armory Rodeo in Maple Creek with Doug ?, Rick?  Al? opening for the Johner Brothers.     Over the next year we had other shows not documented featuring Kelly Read (guitar), Wayne Parenteau (guitar), Keith Read (guitar, drums, vocals,) Gord Moyer (drums), Doug Hergott (guitar), Dale Enns (guitar).   It was frustrating keeping a lineup together so after a year it was decided by Parney and Hoknes to try performing a duo.  Their first show was New Years Eve 1995 at the Riviera Club Motel in Saskatoon.   Hoknes sequenced the entire show and switched to lead guitar.  Together they worked on promotions, newsletters, setlists, sound, and eventually purchasing a PA system, at first a Vanguard Motorhome to travel and later a 1998 Ford F150 truck with cover on the back.  They toured as a duo from 1996 to 2004 performing about 20 tours back and forth from BC to Saskatchewan.  Some of the most frequent stops included at least 20 shows at the Copperbelt Hotel in Creighton, Packers Place in Golden, BC, The Grand in Merritt, BC where we played about 8 rodeo weekends in a row and made good friends at all these places.  We were also one of the first frequent booked acts at the new Gold Eagle Casino in North Battleford where we became friends with Lorne Bick the manager of the casino and Giselle Hoffman.  We first played upstairs in the lounge, then the main stage room when it was opened and then the newer main bar/hall at the south end.  We performed New Years Eve 1997 at the Gold Eagle Casino and New Years Eve 1998 at the Casino in Prince Albert along with Charlie Major.     In October 1997 we were asked to come perform in Australia and stayed there for 7 weeks touring through South western Australia including Gnowerang, Katanning and other towns performing our unique show which was unlike anything they had seen there performing a mix of new country and old classic rock as a duo.   In July 2001 we were one of the headliners at the Mirande Country Music Festival in France which had a turnout of about 40,000 people (unfortunately most watched the shows from under tents as we performed our show in a huge rainstorm with backup band The Road ?? from Europe.   Parney and Hoknes were paid about $10,000.00 to come perform their set of songs - a mix of Parney's originals and classic country songs.  While in France they toured around Germany, Scotland, Netherlands.   By 2004 Hoknes had sequenced 700 songs so the set list was very vast and covered a gigantic range of songs from Hank Williams Sr to Aqua to ACDC.    Terry Hoknes and Doug Hergott arranged, produced and played all the instruments on Parney's 1994 christmas album Rose Country Christmas released only on cassette printed by Don Warkentin (at his home office near Temperance).  Parney released her 3rd album in 1998 recorded in Vancouver with Mike Norman and Tony Rudner.  Hoknes co-wrote 2 of the songs on the album and also added backup vocals to the song "The First Time".   In 2002 with Neil Meckelborg mixing Hoknes and Parney co-wrote an entire album of new material called Sultry Summer Nights featuring Hoknes playing all the instruments and producing.   Hoknes and Parney went to Nashville in the summer of 2002 to market/pitch some of the songs and do some new co-writing.  They co-wrote a song with #1 country hit writer John Greenebaum who wrote Third Rock From The Sun for Joe Diffie.   Besides playing all the casinos over and over in Saskatchewan the duo played frequently at Peter D's on 8th Street before Parney and Hoknes were in a car accident near the Travelodge in 2003 which shut down the touring.  At that time while Parney recovered Hoknes moved on and became a Beatles and Elton John impersonator travelling full time in 2004 with Ovide Pilon.   Parney and Hoknes wrote about 15 songs together and released one of their songs "Early Snow" on video in December 2012.
