    NELLY FURTADO - MANEATER (2006) hit #16
Maneater" is a song written by Nelly Furtado, Timothy "Timbaland" Mosley, Jim Beanz and Nate "Danja" Hills for Furtado's third album, Loose (2006). It was co-produced by Timbaland and Danja and includes influences of 1980s music by artists such as Eurythmics and Hall & Oates. Furtado stated that Hall & Oates' song of the same name was an influence during the writing and recording of the song.

Released as the album's first single in Europe in May 2006, "Maneater" became one of Nelly Furtado's most popular singles, topping the singles charts in Poland and the UK, and reaching the top ten across much of Continental Europe. It served as the album's second single in Australia, where it reached the top five, and in North America, where it became a club hit but was less commercially successful than the lead single, "Promiscuous". It received favorable reviews from many music critics.

Maneater" was made available as a download (via the Apple iTunes Store) on May 22. It was released on maxi CD as the album's first single outside North America on May 26 in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and on June 5 in the United Kingdom and other European markets. It debuted at number eight on the UK Singles Chart the week before its physical release, and a week later (on June 11, 2006) it went to number one. "Maneater" was the seventh highest selling single in the UK in 2006, with 296,000 units sold. In early 2007, chart rules were changed to allow tracks not accompanied by physical singles to appear on the singles chart, and "Maneater" subsequently re-entered the top forty on downloads alone.

The single became a hit elsewhere in Europe, reaching the top five in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Ireland and Norway, the top ten in Belgium, Finland and the Netherlands and the top twenty in France. "Maneater" was released on U.S. national television at the Fashion Rocks event on September 8, 2006. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number sixty-two, the highest debut of the week, and peaked at number sixteen; it also reached the top twenty on Billboard's Pop 100. "Maneater" reached number one on the Hot Dance Club Play chart, but it was not as commercially successful in the U.S. as the preceding single, "Promiscuous", which reached number one on all three charts. The single debuted on the Australia ARIA Singles Chart on September 25 and rose to the top five the following week, peaking in its seventh week at number three. The ARIA accredited "Maneater" as a gold single for selling over 35,000 copies. In Canada, where "Promiscuous" topped the singles chart, "Maneater" reached number twenty-two on November 23, 2006 (its fifteenth week).

    THE VERONICAS - UNTOUCHED (2009) hit #17
Untouched" is a song by Australian recording group The Veronicas, which is featured on their second studio album Hook Me Up (2007). The song was written by Jessica and Lisa Origliasso, and Toby Gad and was produced by Gab as well. It was released as the second single from the band's album in Australia on 10 December 2007, and the first single in the UK and US.

"Untouched" received generally positive reviews from music critics, which applauded the departure from their previous music, with some highlighting it as the albums standout track and some even compared it to singers Pink and Avril Lavigne. The song was commercially successful worldwide, as the song reached number seventeen on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, becoming the group's first top twenty there and was known as their breakthrough single. The song also peaked at number eight in the UK, number two in their native Australia and number nine in New Zealand. The song was certificated platinum by Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), selling over one million shipments there.

An accompanying music video was released for the single, directed by Anthony Rose, where it was shot in Sydney, Australia. The video starts with a lot of pictures in the hallway. The video received generally positive reviews, having over 15 million hits on youtube, remaining the group's highest viewing video. The was featured in 90210 and then in Hellcats. The song has also been nominated for different awards, being nominated for Highest Selling Single at the ARIA Music Awards and nominated for Favorite Song at the Nickelodeon Australian Kids' Choice Awards

The Veronicas are a rock band from Brisbane, Australia, formed in 1999 by twin sisters, Jessica and Lisa Origliasso. In addition to music, the sisters market their own line of clothing which debuted in 2007.

In 2005, The Veronicas released their first studio album entitled The Secret Life of... which peaked at #2 on the Australian charts and gained an Australian ARIA certification of 4x platinum for 280,000+ sales. In total, the album spawned five singles, three of which were top ten singles in Australia.

In 2007, the duo released their second studio album, Hook Me Up, which also peaked at #2 on the Australian charts and earned an Australian ARIA certification of 2x platinum for 140,000+ sales. To date, the album has garnered four Australian top ten singles. The album's title track, "Hook Me Up", was The Veronicas' first #1 single in Australia.

LADY GAGA - BORN THIS WAY (2011) hit #1
Born This Way" is a song by American recording artist Lady Gaga, from her second studio album of the same name. Written and produced by Gaga, Fernando Garibay, Jeppe Laursen and DJ White Shadow, it was developed while Gaga was on the road with The Monster Ball Tour. Inspired by the 1990s empowering music for women and the gay community, Gaga explained that "Born This Way" was her freedom song. She had sung part of the chorus at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards in 2010 and announced the song as the lead single from the album. The single was released on February 11, 2011.

The electropop song is backed by rumbling synth sounds, a humming bass and additional chorus percussion, with sole organ toward the end. The lyrics discuss self-empowerment and feature the names of LGBT communities, including "chola" and "orient", which drew criticism from Asian and Hispanic communities. Critics who favored the song called it a "club-ready anthem", while it faced criticism for having similarities with Madonna's 1989 single "Express Yourself". The song reached number one in 19 countries. It became her third single to top the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and the 1000th song by any artist. It became the fastest-selling song in iTunes history, selling one million copies in five days. "Born This Way" has sold 8.2 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time.

SPIRIT - LINE BY LINE (WATER IN THE EYES) (2004)

Album: Sea Dream (2004)

June 28th 2003 - my #8 favorite daily song for 52 days at age 32 while staying at grandmas house on Taylor St before moving into my 1st home on Eastview.   We put my dog Chewie down at this time (age 15).

Randy California (born Randy Craig Wolfe; February 20, 1951 – January 2, 1997) was a guitarist, singer and songwriter and one of the original members of the rock group Spirit, formed in 1967.   Randy was born into a musical family in Los Angeles and spent his early years studying varied styles at the family's Los Angeles folk club, the Ash Grove. Randy's uncle, Ed Pearl, was famous as the founder of the Ash Grove. He was 15 years old when his mother Bernice Pearl and new stepfather, Ed Cassidy (later to become a founding member of the band Spirit, with Randy), moved to New York City in the summer of 1966 because Cassidy had a number of jazz gigs lined up. It was there, at Manny's Guitars, that Randy met Jimi Hendrix. He played in Hendrix's band The Blue Flame that summer. California, Cassidy and Pearl lived in an apartment building in Forest Hills (Queens), New York called the Balfour, whose other residents included future Steely Dan co-founder Walter Becker, who cites California's blues-based guitar style as an influence on his own playing.   The stage name "Randy California" was given to him by Hendrix to distinguish him from another Randy in the band (who Hendrix dubbed "Randy Texas"). When Hendrix was invited to come to England by former bassist of British Invasion band The Animals Chas Chandler—who became Hendrix's manager and producer—Randy's parents did not allow him to go so that he could finish high school. So at that time the 15-year-old guitar genius did not become a member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. By some accounts, Chandler wanted Hendrix as the only guitarist for the band and nixed California's going to England. Hendrix invited Randy anyway, so they could "go find Jeff Beck."   Together with Cassidy, songwriter/front-man Jay Ferguson, bassist Mark Andes (with whom California and Cassidy initially had formed a band called the Red Roosters) and keyboardist John Locke, California founded the band Spirit—originally Spirits Rebellious, after Khalil Gibran's poem—in 1967. The band's demo was produced by Barry Hansen, later to become Doctor Demento.
LARRY NORMAN - SWEET SWEET SONG OF SALVATION (1969)

Album:  Upon This Rock (1969)

One of a few christian rock albums I have really liked even being non-christian.  This is considered the granddaddy of Christian rock and this album truly is a masterpiece being one of the first records ever to use modern instrumentation and rock styles to sing about religion.   This album was therefore controversial by Christians when first released.  I first picked up this album at the Frances Morrison Library book/record sale and bought the album for 10 cents in 1987.

June 19th 1987 - my #5 favorite daily song for 2 days at age 16 in Grade 11

August 13th 1988 - my #3 favorite daily song for 9 days at age 17 after finishing high school.

Upon This Rock is the debut solo album by pioneering Christian rock musician Larry Norman, released in 1969. It is considered to be "the first full-blown Christian rock album

In 1969 Norman returned to Capitol Records, now headed by Mike Curb, to honor his original 1966 contract with the understanding that he would have complete artistic control. Believing that "Kids just don't want to listen to God's empty songs anymore", in December 1969 Capitol released Norman's first solo rock album, Upon This Rock, "the first major label record to marry rock music with the gospel". "the Sergeant Pepper of Christianity", widely regarded as "the album that first recruited rock in the service of salvation", later cited as being "one of the roots of the current Contemporary Christian Music"; and now considered to be the first full-blown Christian rock album".

METALLICA - SAD BUT TRUE (1991)

Album:  Metallica (1991)

June 1992 I played this self titled album a lot and saw them in concert in 1992 and 2002.

Sad but True" is a song by the American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released as the fifth and final single from their eponymous fifth album, Metallica.

Though the band had utilised the 'D standard' tuning for the recording and subsequent performances of covers such as "Crash Course in Brain Surgery" and The Small Hours, this was the second instance of the band utilising such a low guitar tuning for an original piece ("The Thing That Should Not Be" was the first). Bassist Jason Newsted tuned his 5-string bass down to 'A standard' for this song, which is essentially the equivalent of D standard, i.e. one whole step down.

The instrumental structure was used in Kid Rock's 2000 single, American Bad Ass. The song is on rock's compilation, The History of Rock.

In 2004, Guitar Player listed James Hetfield's tone (most likely produced by an ESP EXP with a Mark IIC+ along with a Danelectro Longhorn bass) as one of the "50 Greatest Tones of All Time

THE MOODY BLUES - HOW IS IT WE ARE HERE (1970)

Album:  A Question Of Balance (1970)

My mother bought the new album Long Distance Voyager on vinyl in 1981 when I was 10.  It was one of the first "new albums" I ever listened to so I got into The Moody Blues very heavily and possibly had bought most of their early albums in around 1983/1984.  My mother always had the album A Question of Balance presumably buying it new in 1970 at age 22.   So I learned this album most likely by 1982/1983 and one of the first non-Beatles albums I would likely have listened to.  Unfortunately there is no chart data for my initial listens to their albums and songs when I first liked them.

A Question of Balance, released in 1970, is the sixth album by The Moody Blues. The album was an attempt by the group to strip down their well-known lush, psychedelic sound in order to be able to better perform the songs in concert. In order to be able to play as many new songs as possible from their new album live, the group decided (temporarily) to abandon their method of heavy overdubbing for A Question of Balance.

For the first time, The Moody Blues used political strife as a basis for songwriting with the British number two hit in May 1970, "Question", which dealt with the controversy resulting from the ongoing Vietnam War.

Released in 1970, the album reached #1 in the United Kingdom and #3 in the United States. However, the group would abandon the stripped-down sounds of A Question of Balance for the lusher sounds of their next two albums, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour and Seventh Sojourn.

PAUL MAURIAT & ORCHESTRA - THE LAST WALTZ (1968)

Album: Mauriat Magic (1968)

My favorite instrumentalist and orchestra ever.  I discovered Paul Mauriat age 15 in 1986 with his #1 album Blooming Hits which featured the #1 top 40 hit Love Is Blue.  His recordings feature the lushest thick string sections that I love to listen to on any recording.

My favorite album in July 1987 at age 16 on holiday with my mom and sister to the maritimes before entering Grade 12.  I played this album on a blank tape on the trip.

Paul Mauriat (4 March 1925 – 3 November 2006) was a French orchestra leader, conductor of Le Grand Orchestre de Paul Mauriat, who specialized in the easy listening genre. He is best known in the United States for his million selling remake of André Popp's "Love is Blue", which was #1 for 5 weeks in 1968. Other recordings for which he is known include El Bimbo, "Toccata" and "Penelope."   During World War II, Mauriat started his own dance band and toured concert halls throughout Europe. In the 1950s he became musical director to at least two well-known French singers, Charles Aznavour and Maurice Chevalier, touring with them respectively
In 1968 his cover of the Andre Popp/Pierre Cour tune “L’Amour Est Bleu” (“Love Is Blue”) became a number 1 hit in the U.S.. The song spent five weeks at the top of the charts. Two other Mauriat singles also made the charts in the U.S - “Love in Every Room” and the title theme from the movie "Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang". “Love Is Blue” was the first instrumental to hit number 1 on the Billboard charts since the Tornados hit with “Telstar” in 1962 and the only American number-one single to be recorded in France. The success of the song and the album on which it appeared, Blooming Hits, established Mauriat as an international recording star.    In 1969, Mauriat started his first world tour with his Grand Orchestra, visiting countries like the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and other Latin American countries.

PAUL McCARTNEY - THE LOVELY LINDA (1970)

Album:  McCartney (1970)

I probably had this album by 1983 at age 12.  I have owned a lot of copies of this album in every possible format.   I have been recording albums my entire life playing all the instruments as a one man project.

It is the first track off McCartney, it was recorded in December 1969, as a test, on McCartney's then-new 4-track recorder, which he had installed his home studio. The song is dedicated to McCartney's first wife Linda It is the shortest song in McCartney's catalogue at 42 seconds long. McCartney has stated it was a "trailer to the full song which will be recorded in the future". The song was featured on the compilation Wingspan: Hits and History.

McCartney (1970) is the debut solo album by Paul McCartney. Apart from Linda McCartney's vocal contributions, McCartney performed (and recorded) the entire album solo. Featuring loosely arranged (and in some cases, unfinished) home recordings, McCartney further explored the "back-to-basics" style which had been intended for The Beatles' Let It Be. The album was reissued on 13 June 2011 as part of the Paul McCartney Archive Collection.

McCartney shot to number 1 in the United States for three weeks, eventually going double platinum. This was despite the fact that it had neither an accompanying single released nor a video clip or tour to promote it, and that critical reaction was far from positive. In the United Kingdom, it was only denied the top spot by the best-selling album of 1970, Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water, which stayed at number 1 for 33 (non-consecutive) weeks. There, McCartney debuted straight at number 2, where it remained for three weeks.

YES - BEYOND AND BEFORE (1969)

Album: Yes (1969)

After dedicating all of 1980-1983 to The Beatles I discovered Yes in 1984 and that year at age 13 bought every single one of their albums due to their new fame with Owner Of A Lonely Heart but it was their 2nd new single Leave It that had my intrigued.  So I learned their first 15 years of material all in 1984 just as I was entering high school.  Yes would quickly become my 2nd favorite band of all time.   I saw Bill Bruford live in concert in 1992 and chatted with him for a moment.  My wife bought tickets to see Yes in 2009 in Toronto but the concert was cancelled due to Jon Anderson's vocal problems.  We flew to New York in 2011 to see Jon Anderson solo in concert.  Members of Yes are my favorite musicians ever including Rick Wakeman, Trevor Rabin, Steve Howe and Chris Squire.   My high school best friend Nels Krauss and I also bonded through our connection of Yes and playing music and we enjoyed jamming on Yes songs in the mid 1980's.

Yes is the 1969 eponymous debut album from British progressive rock band Yes, considered among the first progressive rock albums. The original Yes line-up of vocalist Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Peter Banks, keyboardist Tony Kaye, and drummer Bill Bruford remained intact for the album's recording.

Yes are an English rock band who achieved worldwide success with their progressive, art and symphonic style of rock music. Regarded as one of the pioneers of the progressive genre, Yes are known for their lengthy songs often with complex instrumental and vocal arrangements, mystical lyrics, elaborate album art, and live stage sets. Seventeen musicians have been a part of the band's line-up, which currently comprises singer Jon Davison, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White, and keyboardist Geoff Downes. Yes have sold 13.5 million certified units in the United States

    MOTHERLODE - WHEN I DIE (1969) hit #18
Motherlode was a Canadian pop rock group formed in 1969 in London. The group scored some success in the US with their single, "When I Die", which hit #18 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1969.

The act remain as one-hit wonders.

William Smith and Steve Kennedy had been playing together with Eric Mercury and Dianne Brooks in a Toronto band called the Soul Searchers that Mercury and Brooks fronted as lead vocalists. After the Soul Searchers broke up, first Kennedy and then Smith joined a group called Grant Smith and the Power which also featured David Clayton Thomas.

They formed Motherlode in 1969 and relocated to London, Ontario, where they struggled and stayed with friends. They finally got a break following their debut at the Image Club when Mort Ross signed them to Revolver Records that same year.

Their first single, "When I Die" that was produced by Doug Riley and Terry Brown did not make any headway on the radio. A reciprocal deal in the US with Buddah Records made the song a hit reaching Number 18 on the charts. The song sold more than 500,000 copies and it eventually climbed to Number 5 in the Canadian charts. Brooks contributed a song "Memories of A Broken Promise" as well as some background vocals to Motherlode's When I Die album. Motherlode also contributed a song and instrumental backing on Brooks album, Another Kind Of Soul that was released on Revolver Records.

ELTON JOHN & KIKI DEE - DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART (1976) hit #1
Don't Go Breaking My Heart" is a duet by Elton John and Kiki Dee. It was written by Elton John with Bernie Taupin under the pseudonyms "Ann Orson" and "Carte Blanche" (a pun on the expression "an horse and cart, blanche"), and intended as an affectionate pastiche of the Tamla Motown style, notably the various duets recorded by Marvin Gaye and singers such as Tammi Terrell and Kim Weston. It is not to be confused with the Burt Bacharach/Hal David song of the same title recorded in 1965 by Dionne Warwick for the album Here I Am.

Like many of Elton John's singles from the 1970s, it was never included on an original album (though it was recorded during the same sessions that produced Blue Moves).

"Don't Go Breaking My Heart" was the first No. 1 single in the UK for both Elton John and Kiki Dee, topping the chart for six weeks in mid 1976. John would not enjoy a solo British chart-topper until "Sacrifice" in 1990. It also became his sixth No. 1 single in the US, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks. In the U.S. it was certified Gold Recording Industry Association of America.

The b-side, "Snow Queen", was supposedly inspired by Cher, with Elton's improvising past Sonny & Cher hits "I Got You Babe", and "The Beat Goes On" as well as the solo Cher song "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" during the fadeout of the song.

In 1978, Elton guest starred on The Muppet Show and performed the track with Miss Piggy. In 1985, John and Dee performed the track to the crowd at Wembley Stadium during John's set at Live Aid (where Dee sang backup). In 1987, Elton appeared with Minnie Mouse on the NBC series Totally Minnie performing the track. He also performed it with the Spice Girls on his ITV tribute programme An Audience With Elton John.

PAUL McCARTNEY - TEMPORARY SECRETARY (1980)

Album:  McCartney II (1980)

A few weeks after John Lennon died on December 8th 1980 my Beatles kick was in full gear and my grandpa borrowed The Beatles Sgt Pepper and McCartney II from the Frances Morrison public library on vinyl and I listened to them for the first time in January 1981 at age 9.  This was the very first time I ever heard any songs by Paul McCartney and the first time I heard any of the songs from Sgt Pepper.

Temporary Secretary" is a song by Paul McCartney, featured on his McCartney II album (1980).   Along with the ten-minute "Secret Friend" as its B-side, it was released as a UK only 12" single. A 7" single exists only as a demo for radio stations. It exemplifies both the whimsical nature of the album and McCartney's use of synthesizers and other electronics in the creation of the album.

Music website Allmusic.com said of the album, McCartney II:   In retrospect, the record is muddled and confused, nowhere more so than on the frazzled sequencing of "Temporary Secretary," where McCartney spits out ridiculous lyrics with a self-consciously atonal melody over gurgling synths. Things rarely get worse than that....

In contrast, music website popmatters.com said, in reviewing the 2011 reissue of McCartney II:  “Temporary Secretary” is a manic, futuristic laser blast with an actual melody simmering underneath. It would be pointless to compare it to anything McCartney had ever done before, and would be equally so to compare it to anyone else as it couldn’t possibly be anyone else. More than any other song on either eponymous album, “Temporary Secretary” illustrates the complex nature of Paul McCartney’s musical output...

PEARL JAM - EVEN FLOW (1991)

Album:  Ten (1991)

August 22nd 1992 - my #7 favorite daily song for 28 days at age 21 living on my own renting at Cumberland Ave at the end of 3rd year University during my "anorexic look" stage.  I had won an RPM magazine national music trivia contest and I won 25 brand new CD's and this was one of them!

Even Flow" is a song by the American rock band Pearl Jam. Featuring lyrics written by vocalist Eddie Vedder and music written by guitarist Stone Gossard, "Even Flow" was released in 1992 as the second single from the band's debut album, Ten (1991). The song peaked at number three on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The song was included on Pearl Jam's 2004 greatest hits album, rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991–2003). A remixed version of the song was included on the 2009 Ten reissue.

The song peaked at number three on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and number 21 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Outside the United States, the single was released commercially in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. In Canada, the song reached the top 80 on the Canadian Singles Chart. "Even Flow" peaked at number 27 in the UK and number 22 on the Australian Singles Chart. It was a moderate top 20 success in New Zealand.

Chris True of Allmusic called "Even Flow" "the somewhat less ballady more swaggering follow up to the breakout single 'Alive'." True said that the song "doesn’t even really have an intro—it just starts and keeps going—and the band seems more in the groove than on the overly earnest 'Alive'." True said that the song "confirmed that Pearl Jam were more than just one hit grunge rock wonders." The song was placed at number 77 on a list of "The 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time" by Rolling Stone. It was also included on VH1's countdown of the "100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs" at number 30

    PIDGEON - PENNY'S MAGIC BELL (1969)

Album:  Pidgeon (1969)

I purchased this album in February 1988 at age 17 in Grade 12 the same day I picked up 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit at Tramps on 3rd Avenue for $2.00 each.  Two of my all time favorite albums.

All songs were written by Jobriath Salisbury & poet Richard T. Marshall . A blonde lass named Cheri Gage is credited with lead vocals & autoharp. Bill Strong Smith plays drums & percussion. The legendary Jobriath is credited with keyboards, guitar & lead vocals. (This LP is probably the controversial solo artist's recording debut.) The self-titled Pidgeon album has a lot of musical variety including wild Psych guitar & harpsichord on "Milk & Honey" and "Irene". Vocal harmonies abound. Some tracks are more folky/moody /introspective, while others rock. Jobriath's vocals are very distinctive throughout.

RINGO STARR - BLUE, TURNING GREY OVER YOU (1970)

Album:  Sentimental Journey (1970)

My friend Terry Butler had this album and I think I traded him the new Journey album for it thinking he was getting the better part of the deal but I was very happy to acquire another Beatles related album on my quest to owning them at age 11 in 1982.

July 14th 1990 - my #3 favorite daily song for 3 days at age 19 before entering 2nd year University celebrating Ringo's 50th birthday.

Sentimental Journey is the debut solo album by former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, released in 1970, as the band was splintering apart. Although Starr was the third member of the group to issue solo work (after George Harrison and John Lennon), Sentimental Journey is notable for being the first non-avant-garde studio album by a member of the band, in light of the experimental, soundtrack or live releases his aforementioned bandmates had already released. Paul McCartney's debut, McCartney, would follow three weeks after Sentimental Journey's release.

Sentimental Journey received fair reviews upon its release, although many critics found the idea of Starr covering standards a bit odd considering his musical background. His fame in the Beatles was all that was required, however, to get it all the way to #7 in the UK - with no single release to promote it - and #22 in the US. Although the style of the album took many by surprise, Starr's swift follow-up, Beaucoups of Blues, would be just as radical a stylistic shift.

The pub on the cover of the album is The Empress in Dingle, Liverpool, which is one of the nearest pubs to Ringo's place of birth. The superimposed figures in the windows of the pub are Ringo's relatives.

Song starts at 16:50 on the video clip

THE ROLLING STONES - THINK (1966)

Album: Aftermath (1966)

I received Tattoo You for Xmas 1981 at age 10 and then quickly followed up with Big Hits for my 11th birthday on January 15th 1982 and then sometime afterwards got More Hot Rocks and Aftermath.  At age 11 these was the only songs I knew of the Stones but to this date would say More Hot Rocks is my favorite Stones album.  I played this album a lot in 1982 when I bought it in Vancouver, BC new.

Think" is a Mick Jagger and Keith Richards' composition that first appeared as a Chris Farlowe single which made it to #37 on the British charts in January 1966.  The Rolling Stones' own version appeared three months later on the Aftermath album, with entirely different lyrics in the third verse
Aftermath, first released on 15 April 1966 by Decca Records, is the fourth British studio album by The Rolling Stones. It was released in the United States on 20 June 1966 by London Records as their sixth American album. The album proved to be a major artistic breakthrough for the band, being the first full-length release by the band to consist exclusively of Mick Jagger/Keith Richards compositions. Aftermath was also the first Rolling Stones album to be recorded entirely in the US, at the legendary RCA Studios in Hollywood, California at 6363 Sunset Boulevard, and the first album the band released in true stereo.

The album is also notable for its musical experimentation, with Brian Jones playing a variety of instruments not usually associated with rock music—including sitar on "Paint It, Black" and "Mother's Little Helper", the Appalachian dulcimer on "Lady Jane" and "I Am Waiting", the marimbas (African xylophone) on "Under My Thumb" and "Out of Time", harmonica on "High and Dry" and "Goin' Home", as well as guitar and keyboards. Much of the music was still rooted in Chicago electric blues

    THE KINKS - ATTITUDE (1979)

Album: Low Budget (1979)

November 4th 1989 - my #5 favorite daily song for 1 day at age 18 while living at the monastery for 1st year University in Muenster, SK.

Low Budget is a 1979 album by the English rock group, The Kinks. It was a great success for the group, becoming their best-selling non-compilation album, peaking at #11 on the US album charts

The Kinks were an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, North London, by brothers Ray and Dave Davies in 1964. Categorised in the United States as a British Invasion band, The Kinks are recognised as one of the most important and influential rock acts of the era. Their music was influenced by a wide range of genres, including rhythm and blues, British music hall, folk and country. Ray Davies (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Dave Davies (lead guitar, vocals) remained members throughout the group's 32-year run. Original members Pete Quaife (bass guitar, vocals) and Mick Avory (drums and percussion) were replaced by John Dalton in 1969 and Bob Henrit in 1984, respectively. Dalton was in turn replaced by Jim Rodford in 1978. Keyboardist Nicky Hopkins accompanied the band during studio sessions in the mid-1960s. Later, various keyboardists, including John Gosling and Ian Gibbons, were full-time members

The Kinks had five Top 10 singles on the US Billboard chart. Nine of their albums charted in the Top 40. In the UK, the group had seventeen Top 20 singles and five Top 10 albums. Four of their albums have been certified gold by the RIAA. Among numerous honours, they received the Ivor Novello Award for "Outstanding Service to British Music". In 1990, their first year of eligibility, the original four members of The Kinks were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as well as the UK Music Hall of Fame in November 2005

THE MOODY BLUES - HOUSE OF FOUR DOORS (1968)

Album:  In Search Of The Lost Chord (1968)

My mother bought the new album Long Distance Voyager on vinyl in 1981 when I was 10.  It was one of the first "new albums" I ever listened to so I got into The Moody Blues very heavily and possibly had bought most of their early albums in around 1983/1984.   I listed Peak Hour from the album Days Of Future Passed as one of my favorite songs of all time in 1984 at age 13.  Unfortunately there is no chart data for my initial listens to their albums and songs when I first liked them.

House of Four Doors" is a 1968 song by the British progressive rock band The Moody Blues. Written by the band's bassist John Lodge, it was first released on the Moody Blues 1968 album In Search of the Lost Chord. The song features John Lodge on lead vocals.   "House of Four Doors" is a two-part song that describes a group of people wandering through a forest, and finding "through the leaves" a lost path that leads to the House of Four Doors. The lyrics continue to describe the house and all its beauty. The first part of the song is track four on the album. The second part of the song, which is track six, describes the group leaving the House of Four Doors, and exclaim "You'll be lost now forever." The two parts of the song are separated by "Legend of a Mind" on the album.

"House of Four Doors" is one of the Moody Blues more complex recordings. The opening features each band member on their regular instruments, which includes Justin Hayward on acoustic guitar, John Lodge on bass guitar, Mike Pinder on the mellotron, Ray Thomas on flute, and Graeme Edge on drums. As the song progresses, more obscure instruments are used in addition to the regular instruments. The sections of the song are separated by the sound of a creaking door, which is provided by John Lodge on a cello. There is also a short harpsichord and cello duet towards the end of the song, which are played by Mike Pinder and John Lodge, respectively. The penultimate section of the song also features Mike Pinder on piano.

    PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS - BLUEBIRD (1973)

Album:  Band On The Run (1973)

I had this album by 1983 at the latest at age 12 in Grade 8 but played along this album when I took the bass guitar seriously in 1984.

Bluebird" is a song credited to Paul and Linda McCartney that was originally released on the Paul McCartney and Wings' album Band on the Run. According to author John Blaney, it was written during a vacation in Jamaica. However, author Vincent Benitz claims the song was written as early as 1970 or 1971, noting that Paul and Linda sang the song during a live interview in New York City in 1971. In Continental Europe it was also released as the B-side of the Mrs Vandebilt single.  Although much of the Band on the Run album was recorded in Lagos, Nigeria in August and September 1973, "Bluebird" was completed later in 1973 at AIR Studios in London. However, the percussionist on the song, Remi Kebaka, was from Lagos but happened to be in London when the song was being recorded. One highlight of the song is a saxophone solo played by session musician Howie Casey. Casey repeated his solo during the Wings Over the World tour in 1975 and 1976 Other musical elements of the song include acoustic guitars and calypso-like percussion
Band on the Run is an album by Paul McCartney & Wings, released in 1973. It was Wings' third album. It became Wings' most successful album and remains the most celebrated of McCartney's post-Beatles albums. It was 1974's top-selling studio album in the United Kingdom and Australia, and revitalised McCartney's critical standing.

In 2000 Q magazine placed it at number 75 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. In 2012, Band on the Run was voted 418th on Rolling Stone magazine's revised list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time
