XYLON COZENS - AHAB ON THE DOCK (1995)

Album:  Xylon I (1995)

Xylon Cozens was a childhood friend of mine who was highly influenced by 60's recording with great vocal harmonies such as The Beach Boys.  He had been a member of the accapella vocal group Streetnix.   He began songwriting and came up with some amazing truly original songs and sounds. Recording this album in Saskatoon, SK, Canada in 1995.  His album featured many guest musicians such as his father Nigel Cozens playing guitar tracks.    Some intricate layered vocal harmonies throughout the album which I really liked with some unpleasant sounding chords at times.   I was there for his CD release party.   He had originally recorded some demo's for this album on my 8-track cassette Tascam recorder which I used to rent to him.  I had done a slide guitar track for him but don't know what song it was.  Xylon had formerly been a vocal singer in the accapella group Streetnix from September 1991 to December 1992 at the time I was in 3rd year University.

February 1996 - my favorite album at age 25 while I was on the road performing with Marilyn now for 2.5 years.  This year I borrowed money from my grandma and bought my very own computer for the first time ever after sharing Marilyn's for the past year so that I could input comic book price guide value details in spreadsheets and also work on printing lyrics for our live show and for doing promotional materials for Marilyn.

THE YELLOW BALLOON - CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF YOUR LOVE (1967)

Album:  Yellow Balloon (1967)

I stopped buying records in 1992 at the age of 21.  Our local record shop Tramps had a 1/2 price sale on all vinyl so I went in and bought anything I thought was cool including another great obscure late 1960's band which I think I paid $15.00 for this album.   Luckily it finally came out on CD many years later.

February 28th 1992 - my #3 favorite daily song for 6 days age 21 in 3rd year University.   I had convinced Tramps downtown on 2nd Avenue to let me work for them sorting and cleaning up their huge record inventory in exchange for trade credit towards records which eventually led to them hiring me full time.   After a 10 year run of buying 1960's albums on vinyl this would be the very last one for me to become my #1 favorite song on February 13 1992.  Except for albums by Spirit I would not listen to another 1960's album for 5 years after this.       I had lent this album to my friend Xylon Cozens around 1994 to give him ideas about vocal harmonies as he was preparing his new CD.

The Yellow Balloon was an American sunshine pop band, produced by Gary Zekley. The group is notable for featuring Don Grady (sometimes billed as "Luke R. Yoo") of Mouseketeers and My Three Sons fame. Other band members hailed from Oregon and Arizona. They were led by Alex Valdez (lead singer), and included Frosty Green (keyboards), Don Braught (bass guitar), and Paul Canella (lead guitar). The band at one time also included Daryl Dragon, later the male half of Captain & Tennille.  The Yellow Balloon released multiple singles, including their hit "Yellow Balloon" which peaked at #25 on the Billboard 100 Chart and "Good Feelin' Time"both taken from the group's debut album.  The band's 1967 self-titled LP was released through Canterbury Records and besides featuring the hit single "Yellow Balloon", also included two songs co-written by former The Mamas & the Papas singer Jill Gibson.

LES PAUL & MARY FORD - THE WORLD IS WAITING FOR THE SUNRISE (1951) hit #2

Lester William Polsfuss (June 9, 1915 – August 13, 2009)—known as Les Paul—was an American jazz and country guitarist, songwriter and inventor. He was the inventor of the solid-body electric guitar which made the sound of rock and roll possible. He is credited with many recording innovations. Although he was not the first to use the technique, his early experiments with overdubbing (also known as sound on sound), delay effects such as tape delay, phasing effects and multitrack recording were among the first to attract widespread attention.

His innovative talents extended into his playing style, including licks, trills, chording sequences, fretting techniques and timing, which set him apart from his contemporaries and inspired many guitarists of the present day. He recorded with his wife Mary Ford in the 1950s, and they sold millions of records.

Among his many honors, Paul is one of a handful of artists with a permanent, stand-alone exhibit in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is prominently named by the music museum on its website as an "architect" and a "key inductee" along with Sam Phillips and Alan Freed

TAMMI TERRELL & MARVIN GAYE - AIN'T NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING (1968)

"Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" is a 1968 single released by American R&B/soul duo Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, on the Tamla label in 1968. The B-side of the single is "Little Ole Boy, Little Ole Girl" from the duo's United LP. The first release off the duo's second album, You're All I Need, the song, written and produced by longtime Gaye/Terrell collaborators Ashford & Simpson, became a hit within weeks of release eventually peaking at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Hot Soul Singles chart, their first of two number ones hit together on the soul singles chart. The song appears on the game Karaoke Revolution Party.

Tammi Terrell (born Thomasina Winifred Montgomery; April 29, 1945 — March 16, 1970) was an American recording artist, best known as a star singer for Motown Records during the 1960s, most notably for a series of duets with singer Marvin Gaye. Terrell's career began as a teenager, first recording for Scepter/Wand Records, before spending nearly two years as a member of James Brown's Revue, recording for Brown's Try Me label. After a period attending college, Terrell recorded briefly for Checker Records, before signing with Motown in 1965. With Gaye, Terrell scored 7 Top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "You're All I Need to Get By". Terrell's career was interrupted after a late 1967 concert resulted in the singer collapsing in the arms of Gaye as the two performed, later resulting in her being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Terrell would have eight unsuccessful operations before succumbing to the illness on March 16, 1970 at the age of 24

BILLY JOEL - SAY GOODBYE TO HOLLYWOOD (1981) hit #17
Say Goodbye to Hollywood" is a song written & performed by Billy Joel, first released in 1976 on his album Turnstiles. The song achieved greater recognition in 1981 when a live version from Songs in the Attic was released as a single. Joel wrote the song after moving back to New York City in 1975; he had previously relocated to Hollywood to see if it would boost his career.

Joel has stated in his university lectures that he wrote the song with Ronnie Spector and The Ronettes song "Be My Baby" in mind. Indeed, Joel notes that the two songs share a very similar beat. Recognizing Joel's tribute, Ronnie Spector recorded her own cover version of "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" in 1977, soon after Joel released his first recording of the song on Turnstiles.

William Martin "Billy" Joel (born May 9, 1949) is an American pianist, singer-songwriter, and composer. Since releasing his first hit song, "Piano Man," in 1973, Joel has become the sixth best-selling recording artist and the third best-selling solo artist in the United States, according to the RIAA. He also has the third best-selling album in the United States with his Greatest Hits Vol. 1 & 2.

Joel had Top 40 hits in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, achieving 33 Top 40 hits in the United States, all of which he wrote himself. He is also a six-time Grammy Award winner, a 23-time Grammy nominee and has sold over 150 million records worldwide. He was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame (1992), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1999), and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (2006). In 2008, Billboard magazine released a list of the Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists to celebrate the US singles chart's 50th anniversary, with Billy Joel positioned at No. 23. With the exception of the 2007 songs "All My Life" and "Christmas in Fallujah," Joel stopped recording pop/rock material after 1993's River of Dreams, but he continued to tour extensively until 2010

JOHN LENNON - WATCHING THE WHEELS (1981) hit #10
Watching the Wheels" is a single by John Lennon released posthumously in 1981 after his murder. The B-side features Yoko's "Yes, I'm Your Angel." It was the third and final single released from Lennon and Yoko Ono's Double Fantasy album, and reached number 10 in the US and number 30 in the UK.

In "Watching the Wheels" Lennon addresses those who were confounded by his "househusband" years, 1975-1980. During this period, he "retired" from the music industry to concentrate on raising his son Sean with Yoko. The acoustic demo of "Watching the Wheels" is featured in the ending credits to the 2009 film Funny People. The song features a hammered dulcimer accompanying the lead piano.

The photograph on the cover was taken by Paul Goresh, a fan of Lennon who also took the infamous photo of Lennon signing a copy of Double Fantasy for his killer, Mark David Chapman. Both photos were taken at the same place, in front of the Dakota building, which was the site of his 1980 shooting. Later, Chapman was recorded in police custody reciting a line "People say I'm Crazy" from the song. This clip was used by the band EMF for the track "Lies" on their 1991 album Schubert Dip, though immediate protests from Yoko prompted the sample's removal on subsequent pressings

Double Fantasy is an album released by John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, in 1980. Though initially poorly received, the album is notable for its association with Lennon's murder three weeks after its release, whereupon it became a worldwide commercial success, and went on to win the 1981 Album of the Year at the 24th Annual Grammy Awards

TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS - YOU GOT LUCKY (1983) hit #20
You Got Lucky" is the first single from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' album Long After Dark. The song peaked at #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard Top Tracks chart, where it stayed for three weeks at the end of 1982. A cover of the song appears on the Deluxe Version of The Gaslight Anthem album Handwritten (album).

The official video for the single features Tom Petty and Mike Campbell arriving in a hovercar from the television series Logan's Run at a black tent in the desert. They find a radio/cassette player and turn it on, thus beginning the music, as the other band members arrive in a motorcycle and sidecar. Entering the tent, they turn on electricity for studio equipment and a bank of television sets. Mike plays a guitar solo, Howie Epstein hits a jackpot on a slot machine, and Tom overturns an Astro Invader video game before they all ride away. The look of this short film echoes the postapocalyptic film Mad Max 2, released in 1981.

A clip from the Galactica 1980 episode "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part I" plays on one of the televisions

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are an American rock band from Gainesville, Florida. They were formed in 1976 by Tom Petty (guitar and vocals), Mike Campbell (lead guitar), Benmont Tench (piano, organ, harmonium and vocals), (the three of them had been members of Mudcrutch), Ron Blair (bass and vocals) and Stan Lynch (drums and vocals). Petty and the Heartbreakers are known for hit singles such as "American Girl", "Breakdown", "The Waiting", "Learning to Fly", "Refugee" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance". The Heartbreakers still tour regularly and continue to record albums.

    DESTINY'S CHILD - BOOTYLICIOUS (2001)

Album:  Survivor (2001)

August 4th 2001 - my #1 favorite current top 40 song for 6 weeks

August 23rd 2001 - my #3 favorite daily song for 69 days at age 30 while living in Dalmeny a month after getting back from performing in France and touring Europe.

"Bootylicious" is a song by American R&B group Destiny's Child. It was written and produced by Rob Fusari, Falonte Moore, and group member Beyoncé Knowles for the band's third studio album Survivor (2001), and contains a prominent sample from the 1981 recording "Edge of Seventeen", as written and performed by Stevie Nicks.

The track was released as the album's second single from the album in 2001 and became the band's fourth U.S. non-consecutive number-one single. It also reached the top-five in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Although the term "bootylicious" was first coined by rapper Snoop Dogg in 1992, the popularity of this track caused the word to be added to the Oxford English Dictionary (defined as "(of a woman) sexually attractive") in 2004.

JOHN LENNON - OH YOKO (1971)

Album: Imagine (1971)

I may have first purchased the Imagine album in about 1983 at age 12.  I went through the entire album in 1987 to write out the guitar chords to play along with.

December 13th 1989 - my #5 favorite daily song for 1 day while honoring Lennon on his 9th anniversary of his death when I was 18 and living at the monastery in Muenster, SK for 1st year University.

Oh Yoko!" is a 1971 song, written and performed by John Lennon, that can be found on his album Imagine and the greatest hits compilation Working Class Hero: The Definitive Lennon.

The song was written about his wife Yoko Ono, and features Nicky Hopkins on piano and co-producer Phil Spector on harmony vocal. Lennon plays harmonica for the first time on a solo recording (since The Beatles' "Rocky Raccoon"), and it would also be the last time he used the instrument.

The song was featured in the 1998 film Rushmore, starring Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman.

Imagine is the second album by John Lennon. Recorded and released in 1971, it tended towards songs that were gentler, more commercial and less avant-garde than those on his previous album, the critically acclaimed John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. The album is considered the most popular of his works. In 2012, Imagine was voted 80th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time

    RINGO STARR - I'M A FOOL TO CARE (1970)

Album:  Sentimental Journey (1970)

My friend Terry Butler had this album and I think I traded him the new Journey album for it thinking he was getting the better part of the deal but I was very happy to acquire another Beatles related album on my quest to owning them at age 11 in 1982.

July 16th 1990 - my #7 favorite daily song for 2 days at age 19 before entering 2nd year University celebrating Ringo's 50th birthday.

Sentimental Journey is the debut solo album by former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, released in 1970, as the band was splintering apart. Although Starr was the third member of the group to issue solo work (after George Harrison and John Lennon), Sentimental Journey is notable for being the first non-avant-garde studio album by a member of the band, in light of the experimental, soundtrack or live releases his aforementioned bandmates had already released. Paul McCartney's debut, McCartney, would follow three weeks after Sentimental Journey's release.

Sentimental Journey received fair reviews upon its release, although many critics found the idea of Starr covering standards a bit odd considering his musical background. His fame in the Beatles was all that was required, however, to get it all the way to #7 in the UK - with no single release to promote it - and #22 in the US. Although the style of the album took many by surprise, Starr's swift follow-up, Beaucoups of Blues, would be just as radical a stylistic shift.

The pub on the cover of the album is The Empress in Dingle, Liverpool, which is one of the nearest pubs to Ringo's place of birth. The superimposed figures in the windows of the pub are Ringo's relatives.

    METALLICA - THE UNFORGIVEN (1992) hit #35
The Unforgiven" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released as the second single from their eponymous fifth album Metallica. Though one of the slower tracks on the album, its chord progression is distinctly one of the heavier. The song deals with the theme of the struggle of the individual against the efforts of those who would subjugate him.

The song has since spawned two sequels (both in name proper as well as thematically), in the form of "The Unforgiven II", from the album ReLoad, and "The Unforgiven III", from the album Death Magnetic.

Lars Ulrich explained that the band wanted to try something new with the idea of a ballad - instead of the standard melodic verse and heavy chorus (as evidenced on their previous ballads "Fade to Black", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" and "One"), the band opted to reverse the dynamic, with heavy, distorted verses and a softer, melodic chorus, played with classical guitars. The opening section contains percussive instruments performed by Ulrich, and also a small amount of keyboards.

The horn intro was essentially taken from The Unforgiven (a Western movie) and then reversed so its source would be hidden, as Hetfield later explained on Classic Albums: Metallica - Metallica.

Metallica is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, whose releases include fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship that placed them as one of the founding "big four" of thrash metal alongside Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. They formed in 1981 when James Hetfield responded to an advertisement that drummer Lars Ulrich had posted in a local newspaper. As of 2003, the line-up features long-time lead guitarist Kirk Hammett (who joined the band in 1983) and bassist Robert Trujillo (a member since 2003) alongside Hetfield and Ulrich. Previous members of the band are lead guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to found the band Megadeth), and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted. The band also had a long collaboration with producer Bob Rock, who produced all of its albums from 1990 to 2003 and served as a temporary bassist between the departure of Newsted and the hiring of Trujillo.

    BRITNEY SPEARS - TOXIC (2004) hit #3
"Toxic" is a song by American recording artist Britney Spears from her fourth album, In the Zone. It was released on January 12, 2004, by Jive Records as the second single from the album. After trying to choose between "(I Got That) Boom Boom" and "Outrageous" to be the second single from In the Zone, Spears selected "Toxic" instead. A dance-pop song with electropop influences, "Toxic" features varied instrumentation, such as drums, synthesizers and surf guitar. It is accompanied by high-pitched Bollywood strings and breathy vocals. Its lyrics refer to being addicted to a lover. The song has received critical acclaim by music critics, who deemed it as the strongest track of In the Zone, while praising its hook and chorus.

"Toxic" attained worldwide success, reaching the top-five in fifteen countries, while topping the charts in Australia, Canada, Hungary, Norway and the United Kingdom. In the United States, it became her fourth top ten single. The accompanying music video for the song was directed by Joseph Kahn and features references to Blade Runner, The Seven Year Itch and the films of John Woo. It portrays Spears as a secret agent in the search of a vial of green liquid. After she steals it, she enters an apartment and poisons her unfaithful boyfriend. The video also includes interspersed scenes of Spears naked with diamonds over her body. After Janet Jackson's Superbowl incident, the video was considered too racy for MTV and was moved to late-night programming.

Spears has performed "Toxic" in a number of live appearances, including the 2004 NRJ Music Awards and in three of her concert tours. It was the opening number of The Onyx Hotel Tour (2004), where she sang atop of a bus wearing a black catsuit;  The song has also appeared in feature films such as Knocked Up, You Again and television series Doctor Who. "Toxic" won Spears her first Grammy at the 2005 ceremony in the category of Best Dance Recording, while gaining her credibility amongst critics. The song has been included in lists by Pitchfork, NME and Rolling Stone as one of the best songs of the decade. It has been noted for redefining the sound of dance-pop music. Spears has named "Toxic" as her favorite song from her career.

    TERRY HOKNES - KNICK KNACK (2011) Opus #1100 ??

Official Music Video promoted online

As the new century began a new chapter in songwriting where the focus was more on recording polished songs but writing way less and very sporadic.    I had written 500 songs by the age of 19 and had hit 1000 songs by the age of 25.  But since then I can go over a year at a time without writing a song but really focusing in most cases on a more commercial type of polished song however I still venture into all possible genres.  I continue to play and sing every part on all my songs and recordings.

I hired Neil Meckelborg of Audio Art to record my songs in 2001.  We started out recording a full album at their location downtown behind the Bus depot but eventually worked on recordings at Neil's private studio.  In total we recorded 3 full albums of material of my songs and a full length album of songs I wrote with Marilyn Parney that I produced.  Neil and I also worked on a Trooper hit song karaoke CD in 2001.  I spent 18 months recording with Neil and over 40 songs and over $10,000.00 in studio bills I paid at that time to record the best quality audio ever on my songs.  Neil had used Sonar Cakewalk so I learned how to use it and have used that now for a decade in my own studio.

    SPIRIT - MEGA STAR (1976)

Album:  Farther Along (1976)

April 14th 1988 - my #2 favorite daily song for 3 days at age 17 while in Grade 12.  I was on a classical music tour to Banff, SK to the music resort with the Saskatoon Youth Orchestra rooming with violinist Darcy Burback.   I listened to this album non-stop on that trip.   This song directly influenced my own composition later that year titled Spotlight Of Life.

Farther Along was the third album that Spirit released through Mercury Records. Though Jay Ferguson was missing from the lineup, it is generally considered to be their first "reunion" album.  Out of the four albums that Spirit recorded for Mercury in the mid-70s, this one is the least influenced by Randy California's time in Hawaii. However, it isn't too dissimilar from the previous two albums in that regard, though the song structures are very tight throughout. Consequently, it also bears more than a passing resemblance to Clear at times, probably because of John Locke's presence in the group. It is particularly cherished by fans of that album. The album also includes a notable version of Nature's Way, which is arranged for a chamber orchestra.

Spirit was an American jazz/hard rock/progressive rock/psychedelic band founded in 1967, based in Los Angeles, California.  The original lineup of the group evolved from an earlier Los Angeles band, The Red Roosters, which included Randy California (guitars, vocals), Mark Andes (bass) and Jay Ferguson (vocals, percussion). With the addition of California's stepfather Ed Cassidy (drums), and keyboard player John Locke the new band was originally named the Spirits Rebellious (after a book by Khalil Gibran) but was soon shortened simply to Spirit. In 1966 Randy California had also played with Jimi Hendrix (then known as Jimmy James) in his band, The Blue Flame

MOBILE - OUT OF MY HEAD (2006)

May 13th 2006 - my #6 favorite daily song for 25 days at age 35 living at Eastview dating Valerie now for 3 months and Nicholas is 3 weeks old.

Out of My Head" is a rock song recorded by Mobile. It was released as the second single from their debut album Tomorrow Starts Today (2006). The song reached the top five on the Canadian BDS Airplay Chart and Canadian Dance Chart.

The music video reached number one on MuchMusic's Countdown in May 2006. The video fell down the countdown list after reaching #1, but managed to reach #1 again in July 2006. This is a feat never achieved before on Muchmusic. Due to the video reclimbing the charts, Mobile set the record for the most weeks spent on the Countdown with a single video, at 22. It was the band's first number one video, after "Montreal Calling" reached the top five in January of that year.

There was a remix made for the song after the initial release in 2006, it was included on the compilation album MuchDance. An accompanying video was made for the remix, which likely contributed to the song re-climbing the MuchMusic Countdown.

Mobile were a Canadian alternative rock band from Montreal initially composed of Mathieu Joly (vocals), Christian Brais (guitar), Pierre-Marc Hamelin (drums), Dominic Viola (bass) and Frank Williamson (guitar). Their debut album, Tomorrow Starts Today, was released in 2006. The band was nominated for two Juno Awards in 2007 and went on to win the award for "New Group of the Year". Hamelin left the band and was replaced by Martin Lavallée.

TERRY JACKS - IF YOU GO AWAY (1974)

June 2nd 1989 - my #7 favorite daily song for 4 days at age 18 taking extra high school classes the year after graduating at Nutana.

If You Go Away" is a song in English based upon the French song "Ne me quitte pas" (1959) written by Jacques Brel. The English lyrics were written by Rod McKuen as part of a larger project to translate Brel's work. "If You Go Away" is considered a pop standard and has been recorded by many artists, including Greta Keller, for whom some say McKuen wrote the lyrics.    Terry Jacks recorded a version of the song which was released as a single in 1974 and reached #29 on the Adult Contemporary chart, #68 on the Billboard Hot 100, and went to #8 in the UK.    The complex melody is partly derivative of classical music - the poignant "But if you stay..." passage comes from Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6.

Terrence Ross "Terry" Jacks (born March 29, 1944, Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, record producer and environmentalist.    The song "Seasons in the Sun", released in late 1973 on his own record label, Goldfish Records, became the largest-selling international single by a Canadian artist at that time and earned Jacks two Juno Awards. It is Rod McKuen's 1965 adaptation of "Le moribond", a 1962 original by Belgian singer Jacques Brel; for his version, Jacks made some modifications to the lyrics. In the United States, in Great Britain and in Germany, in these countries it was released on Bell Records, and the song went to #1 on the charts. The B-side of "Seasons In The Sun" was a humorous song entitled "Put the Bone In" which was ostensibly about a woman asking her butcher to put in a bone with the rest of her meat order, but was intented to be a sexual double entendre. Jacks later released "If You Go Away" (another McKuen adaptation of a Jacques Brel song entitled "Ne Me Quitte Pas"), which reached #8 in Great Britain and #24 in Germany, and a cover of Kevin Johnson's "Rock 'N' Roll (I Gave You The Best Years Of My Life)", both of which had more success in Canada but also made the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the USA.

    LED ZEPPELIN - TANGERINE (1970)

Album:  Led Zeppelin III (1970)

Tangerine" is a folk rock song composed by Jimmy Page and performed by English rock band Led Zeppelin. It was released on their 1970 album Led Zeppelin III.

Like several Led Zeppelin tunes written by Page, it has its origins in an old Yardbirds song, in this instance an unreleased composition entitled "Knowing That I'm Losing You". The Yardbirds version features different lyrics, with the exception of the verse that begins with "Measuring a summer's day."

The track has an acoustic country flavour courtesy of the pedal steel guitar playing of Page The song begins with a false start, after which Page pauses to set the right tempo. Throughout its duration, the song continually changes tempo a few bars at a time while the lyrics fondly recall love and contentedness. This was the second-to-last Led Zeppelin song Page wrote without any input from Robert Plant. ("Bron-Yr-Aur" from Physical Graffiti was the last.)

The song uses a simple double track vocal pattern to create a recognisable lilting feel. The song uses a standard Am G D C progression for the verses before moving on to G C D progression for the chorus

COLLECTIVE SOUL - BETTER NOW (2004)

Album:   Youth (2004)

June 3rd 2005 - my #7 favorite daily song for 38 days at age 34 after splitting from Michelle/Brianna and just freshly living on my own again at Eastview.

Collective Soul is an American rock band originally formed in Stockbridge, Georgia. Collective Soul broke into mainstream popularity with their first hit single, "Shine". They have recorded seven Number One mainstream rock hits.

Better Now" is a 2004 song by the American alternative rock band Collective Soul, released on their 2004 album, Youth. It was written by singer/guitarist Ed Roland and producer Dexter Green.

The coda features a saxophone solo. In concert, this is replaced with a guitar solo. The radio edit version also includes a guitar solo. Also unusual for a rock song, the bass doesn't come in until the first chorus, and plays prominent alternating root / fifth quarter notes.

  • The Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City, Indiana uses the song in recent TV and Radio Ads.
  • The Kellogg Company used it in an ad for its Special K cereal, "feeling better now" in this instance being used to denote a woman's feeling healthier after going on their "Special K diet" (she is seen trying on dresses.)
  • For the 2008 Canadian election, Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper used the song as his intro music when he entered his party HQ for a victory speech. The song was similarly used in the 2011 Conservative federal election campaign.
  • The ending of the film Cursed (2005 film).
THE BEATLES - DOCTOR ROBERT (1966)

Album:  Revolver (1966)

Doctor Robert" is a song by The Beatles released on the album Revolver in the United Kingdom and on Yesterday and Today in the United States. The song was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. It was recorded in seven takes on 17 April 1966 with vocals overdubbed 19 April. In 1968, McCartney described the meaning of the song, saying "There's some fellow in New York, and in the States we'd hear people say: 'You can get everything off him; any pills you want.' That's what Dr. Robert is all about, just a pill doctor who sees you all right." In 1980, Lennon said that he was Doctor Robert: "I was the one who carried all the pills on tour ... in the early days".

The song is in the key of A major, though the key center is B, thereby making it in the dorian mode  The musical arrangement has staggered layering, the backing vocals starting in the second verse, the lead guitar just before the bridge while the bridge itself has added harmonium and extra vocals mixed. John's lead is automatically double tracked with each of the two slightly-out-of-phase tracks split onto separate stereo channels; creating a surrealistic effect supporting the lyric about drug use. An interesting feature is the suitably 'blissful' modulation (on "well, well well you're feeling fine") to the key of B on the bridge via an F#7 pivot chord (VI7 in the old key of A and V7 in the new key of B)

PAUL McCARTNEY & CARL PERKINS - GET IT (1982)

Album: Tug Of War (1982)

This was the first McCartney album I ever bought as a brand new release in the summer of 1982 at age 11 just entering Grade 7 for my last year at Open School at Victoria School.  I had also listened to this album at Bible Camp in Outlook? that I went for a week that summer with my friend Aaron Holowaychuk.

Tug of War is the fourth solo studio album by Paul McCartney, released in 1982. It is the follow-up to the 1980 album McCartney II, and his first official solo album after the dissolution of Wings in April 1981. The recording sessions for the album reunited McCartney with producer George Martin. Tug of War was also McCartney's first album after the death of his former Beatles bandmate John Lennon.

In March 1982, McCartney's duet with Stevie Wonder, "Ebony and Ivory", was released to broad acclaim. It reached #1 in many countries and did much to restore McCartney's critical reputation after what was viewed as a lean period for him. Consequently, when Tug of War appeared in April, it was an immediate worldwide #1, selling several million copies and was received strongly by the public, even being nominated for the "Album of the Year" Grammy in 1983. The follow-up single "Take It Away" was a US Top 10 entry as well.
