| CORINA - TEMPTATION (1991) Album: Corina (1991) September 5th 1991 - my #1 favorite daily song for 13 days. A nice dark dramatic top 40 dance song that I went out and bought the CD. August 24th 1991 - my #1 weekly favorite song in the top 40 for 3 weeks. "Temptation" was the fourth single release from freestyle singer Corina and the first single from her debut album, Corina. It was her biggest hit, peaking at number 6 in the U.S Billboard Pop Charts

| LADY GAGA - JUDAS (2011) Album: Born This Way (2011) After Telephone had been my favorite song of 2010 I definitely was paying close attention to new releases by Lady Gaga as she was now the top music star in the world. In fact my wife surprised me by getting me Lady Gaga concert tickets for Christmas 2010 and we flew to New York to see her perform in April 2011 and we had a 10 day holiday in New York and this concert being the highlight. Valerie paid $250.00 for each ticket online through scalpers. We had our luggage with us and did not know how to take a bus or subway to the concert so we landed up taking a taxi which cost us $120.00 one way to the show and we got sore feat standing on the main level watching the show. We took the subway home from east New York all the way to Times Square. It was common at this time for people to cover brand new songs and post them on youtube as quickly as possible to get lots of hits as the first covers. I attempted this by doing my own one man versions of Born This Way and Judas but neither went viral like I had hoped. You can still watch them online at youtube.com April 30th 2011 - my #1 favorite current top 40 hit for 5 weeks April 30th 2011 - my #1 favorite current Canadian top 40 hit for 6 weeks May 17th 2011 - my #1 favorite daily song for 51 days making it my #2 favorite daily song of 2011. Judas" is a song by American recording artist Lady Gaga, from her second studio album Born This Way (2011). It was released by Interscope Records on April 15, 2011, four days ahead of its scheduled release. Written and produced by Lady Gaga and RedOne, "Judas" is an electro house and dance song about a woman in love with a man who betrayed her. It embodies the incidents that have haunted Gaga in the past, and its core meaning refers to the negative parts of her life that she can't escape. Gaga has further explained that the song was also about honoring one's inner darkness in order to bring oneself into the light. The artwork for the single was designed by Gaga in Microsoft Word. In spite of a polarizing impact on several religious groups, the song was generally well received by critics, who likened the song to "Bad Romance" with some noting it should have been the album's lead single. |
| SYD BARRETT - CLOWNS AND JUGGLERS (1969) Album: Opel (1988) December 29th 1990 - my #1 favorite daily song at age 19. My childhood best friend Zender had got into Pink Floyd so I had first heard Syd Barrett when I bought Zender a Syd Barrett bootleg album but I later picked up this album Opel and listened to some really weird lyrics and often "wrong" chord changes but there is something appealing and haunting about Syd's recordings such as this one. Opel is an album released in 1988, compiled from recordings made by former Pink Floyd frontman Syd Barrett between 1968 and 1970 While Barrett only released two albums in 1970, The Madcap Laughs and Barrett, the existence of unreleased studio work was widely reported. After years of demand from Barrett's considerable fan base, Opel was compiled and released. Syd approved the new release. It consists of 8 previously unreleased songs and alternate versions of 6 already released songs. Despite its positive reviews, it failed to chart |
| BOOTSAUCE - PAYMENT TIME (1990) Album: The Brown Album (1990) I saw them front row in concert to promote the Bull album in spring 1992 at the Broadway Theatre in Saskatoon, Sk. The concert rocked and they are one of my all time favorite hard rock groups and Canadian too. I still have my Bull tour shirt that I still wear after 20 years. March 17th 1991 - my #3 favorite daily song for 7 days at age 20 living with Grandma on Taylor Street in Nanny's old bedroom. Bootsauce was a Canadian rock band formed in Montreal in 1989. The band received a Juno Award for their 1991 single "Everyone's a Winner". The band was composed of Drew Ling (real name Drew Thorpe) (vocals), Pere Fume (real name Perry Johnson) (guitar), Sonny Greenwich Jr. (guitar), Alan Baculis (bass guitar), and John “Fatboy” Lalley (drums). Combining soul, funk and metal sounds, the band is best known for their 1990 cover of Hot Chocolate's "Everyone's a Winner". |
| THE DRIFTERS - I COUNT THE TEARS (1960) I bought the Drifters budget release greatest hits album at Woolworths Department Store on 20th Street and Ave C in about 1985 and this was my favorite song which the hook part seems to be stolen years later as the same vocal riff in Lets Live For Today by The Grass Roots. This song was a radio hit in 1960 going to #17.
The Drifters are a long-lived American
doo-wop and
R&B/soul
vocal group with a peak in popularity from 1953 to 1963,
though several splinter Drifters continue to perform today.
They were originally formed to serve as backing group for
Clyde McPhatter (of
Billy Ward & the Dominoes) in 1953.
Rolling Stone magazine states that the Drifters were the least stable of the vocal groups due to being low-paid hired musicians under the direct control of their management, headed by George Treadwell, who owned the Drifters name. The Treadwell Drifters website states that there have been 60 vocalists in the history of the Treadwell Drifters line. Several splinter groups by former Drifters members (not under Treadwell's management) add to the count. These splinter groups are usually identified with a possessive credit such as "Bill Pinckney's Original Drifters", "Charlie Thomas' Drifters", etc. Only one splinter Drifters group features a classic Drifters member, Charlie Thomas' Drifters. Nevertheless, there are two versions of the Drifters that are notable. The first classic Drifters formed by Clyde McPhatter was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame as "The Drifters" or "The Original Drifters". The second Drifters formed by Treadwell featuring Ben E. King was separately inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame as Ben E. King and the Drifters In their induction, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame eclectically selected four members from the classic Drifters, two from the second Drifters, and one from the post-King Treadwell Drifters |
| GLEN ROYER - I'M OK (2009) October 30th 2009 - my #8 favorite daily song for 25 days at age 38 living at Avenue M South in Saskatoon where this song was recorded by my friend Glen Royer. We first met in 1991 when he was promoting his band Greenhouse and I was in Blackberry Way. From 2003 to 2009 we both performed in a Beatles tribute band together called Liverpool and played about 300 shows in western Canada. Glen recorded his first solo album in my home studio in 2009 including this song that he wrote and I played all the instruments and backup vocals. I had recorded this pop/dance/top 40 version of the song though he recorded a more traditional acoustic laid back adult contemporary version of the song for his album "Diary".

| PINK FLOYD - BIKE (1967) Album: Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967)
Bike" is a song by British
psychedelic rock band
Pink Floyd, and is featured on their debut album,
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967).
In the song, Syd Barrett's lyrical subject shows a girl his bike (which he borrowed), a cloak, a homeless mouse that he calls Gerald, and a clan of gingerbread men—because she "fits in with [his] world". With each repetition of the chorus, a sudden percussive noise is heard similar to the firing of two gunshots. Towards the end of the song, he offers to take her into a "room of musical tunes". The final verse is followed by an instrumental section that is a piece of musique concrète: a noisy collage of oscillators, clocks, gongs, bells, a violin, and other sounds edited with tape techniques, apparently the "other room" spoken of in the song and giving the impression of the turning gears of a bicycle. The ending of the song fades out with the sounds of the band members laughing played at double speed. The song was written for Barrett's then girlfriend, Jenny Spires. She is also mentioned in the song "Lucifer Sam", which is also on The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. It also appears on two Floyd compilation albums: Relics (1971) and Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd (2001). On both albums, it is the final track |
| TIM McGRAW - FELT GOOD ON MY LIPS (2010) January 15th 2011 - my #1 favorite current Country hit for 7 weeks February 11th 2011 - my #8 favorite daily song for 42 days at age 40 living at Ave M South with Valerie now married over 3 years Nicholas was almost 5.
Felt Good on My Lips" is the title of a song written
by
Brett Beavers,
Jim Beavers,
Brett Warren and Brad Warren, and was recorded by
American
country music singer
Tim McGraw. It was released in September 2010 as the
lead single from his compilation album
Number One Hits, and has since become McGraw's 23rd
Number One hit on Billboard's
Hot Country Songs chart. The song is also included on
his 2012 release
Emotional Traffic.
Songwriter Brett Beavers wrote "Felt Good on My Lips" with his brother, Jim Beavers, as well as Brett Warren and Brad Warren (also known as The Warren Brothers). In an interview with The Boot, Jim said that Brett provided the idea of writing with The Warren Brothers, and Brett Warren based the song around a bass guitar riff that Jim played |
| STARLAND VOCAL BAND - AFTERNOON DELIGHT (1976) hit #1
Afternoon Delight" is a song recorded by
Starland Vocal Band, featuring
close harmony and sexually suggestive wordplay. It was
written by
Bill Danoff, one of the members of the band. It became a
number-one U.S.
Billboard Hot 100 single on July 10, 1976. The song also
reached number-one in Canada and peaked at number 5 in New
Zealand.
Danoff's fellow bandmember and then-wife Kathy "Taffy" Nivert told at least one audience that the title came from a spicy menu item of the same name at Clyde's restaurant in Georgetown. Danoff enjoyed writing the song and downplayed the somewhat controversial lyrics, saying, "I didn't want to write an all-out sex song ... I just wanted to write something that was fun and hinted at sex." The band consisted of Bill, Jon Carroll, Margot Chapman & Taffy Danoff. Concurrent to the Starland Vocal Band's version, country singer Johnny Carver had a Top 10 cover of his own on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. In 1983, the Circle Jerks also covered this song as one of the six cover versions on "Golden Shower of Hits (Jerks on 45)", which appears on their third album with the same title. British experimental folk music band Current 93 used an industrial-style cover version as an introduction to their performances of their 2009 album. Claude François sang it in French as "Dimanche après-midi". At the 19th Grammy Awards ceremony in 1977, "Afternoon Delight" received three nominations. It won the Grammy Award for Best Arrangement for Voices and was also nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Record of the Year. In 2010 Billboard named "Afternoon Delight" the 20th sexiest song of all time. Also in 2010, Matthew Wilkening of AOL Radio ranked the song at #26 on the list of the 100 Worst Songs Ever, stating, "If [Danoff] can sing this cheesy song, and still somehow get some in the middle of the workday, we bow to him |
| PAUL McCARTNEY - AT THE MERCY (2005) Album: Chaos And Creation In The Backyard (2005) I bought this CD new in 2005 but never opened it for over a year until December 2006 at age 35 when I was on a break from Valerie and Nicholas was 8 months old. January 1st 2007 - my #3 favorite daily song for 17 days including my 36th birthday. December 25th 2011 - my #10 favorite daily song for 50 days including my 41st birthday spending almost a year listening to all of Paul's recordings in chronological order while living at Avenue M South married to Valerie for over 4 years and Nicholas now 5.5 years old.
Chaos and
Creation in the Backyard
is the thirteenth solo studio album by
Paul McCartney released in 2005. A long time
in the making, the set was produced by
Radiohead and
Beck collaborator
Nigel Godrich at
George Martin's suggestion. McCartney
plays almost all of the instruments, similar to
his 1970 album
McCartney and the 1980
McCartney II album. In addition,
Chaos And Creation In The Backyard marks the
first time since 1984's
Give My Regards to Broad Street that
McCartney was not involved in producing one of
his studio albums. Chaos and Creation in the Backyard was
McCartney's last rock album release for longtime
label
EMI. He signed a deal with
Hear Music, owned by
Starbucks, in March 2007

| THE BEATLES - IN MY LIFE (1965) Album: Rubber Soul (1965) This is one of the first Beatles songs I ever heard from the US release version of Rubber Soul which is the only Beatles album my mother had that I listened to when John Lennon died when I was age 9 in 1980.
In My Life" is a song by
The Beatles written by
John Lennon and
Paul McCartney. The song originated with Lennon, and
while McCartney contributed to the final version, the extent
of his contribution is in dispute.
George Martin contributed the instrumental bridge.
Released on the 1965 album
Rubber Soul, it is ranked 23rd on
Rolling Stone's "The
500 Greatest Songs of All Time" as well as fifth on
their list of The Beatles 100 Greatest Songs. The song
placed second on
CBC's
50 Tracks.
Mojo magazine named it the best song of all time in
2000.
According to Lennon, the song's origins can be found when the English journalist Kenneth Allsop made a remark that Lennon should write songs about his childhood. Afterwards, Lennon wrote a song in the form of a long poem reminiscing on his childhood years. The original version of the lyrics was based on a bus route he used to take in Liverpool, naming various sites seen along the way, including Penny Lane and Strawberry Field Those original lyrics are on display at The British Museum. |
| GRAND FUNK RAILROAD - MEAN MISTREATER (1970)
November 28th 1988 - my #2 favorite daily song for 3 days at age 17 after graduating high school. I had bought a brand new cheap budget compilation tape of early Grand Funk songs including this one.
Closer to Home is
Grand Funk Railroad's third studio album, and was
released in July 1970 by
Capitol Records. It was produced by
Terry Knight. This album reached
RIAA
gold record status in 1970, making it the group's third
gold record in one year. The songs, "Sin's a Good Man's
Brother" and "Aimless Lady", were later covered by South
African group,
Suck. "Sin's a Good Man's Brother" was also covered by
the band
Monster Magnet on their first full length album
Spine of God. The album's inside artwork shows a live
photo of the band performing at
Madison Square Garden in February 1970.
In 2002 "Closer To Home" was remastered on compact disc with bonus tracks and also released in a limited edition box set "Trunk of Funk" that contained the band's first four albums. The "trunk" has slots for twelve CD's to house the future release of the remaining eight albums that were released by Capitol records. Also included is a pair of "Shinin' On" 3-D glasses, guitar pick and a sticker reproducing a concert ticket. In the 2009 film Law Abiding Citizen, the song Sin's a Good Man's Brother is featured in the closing credits, which gained the band some extra recognitionin with today's youth. Grand Funk Railroad (also known as Grand Funk) is an American rock band that was highly popular during the 1970s. Grand Funk Railroad toured constantly to packed arenas worldwide. A popular take on the band during its heyday was that, although the critics hated them, audiences loved them. The band's name is a play on words of the Grand Trunk Railroad, a railroad line that ran through the band's home town of Flint, Michigan |
| THE STRAWBS - SHEEP (1971) Album: From The Witchwood (1971) I became a fan of The Strawbs in December 1984 at age 13 after borrowing The Best Of Strawbs cassette tape from the JS Wood Library due to their connection to my favorite band at the time Yes which they both shared keyboardist Rick Wakeman. The Strawbs would be one of the most important groups to me from 1984 to 1991 in my teenage years. I bought this album used in 1985 at age 14. Strawbs (or The Strawbs) are an English rock band founded in 1964. Although the band started out as a bluegrass group they eventually moved on to other styles such as folk rock, glam rock and progressive rock. They are best known for their hit Part of the Union, which reached number two in the UK charts in February 1973, and for touring with Supertramp in their Crime of the Century Tour, doing their Hero and Heroine Tour, which drew musical similarities and themes.
From the Witchwood is a studio
album by English band
Strawbs. It was recorded at Air Studios,
London during February and March 1971 and reached number
39 in the
UK Album Charts. The album is the first and last
studio album to feature
Rick Wakeman in the band line-up, although he had
featured on their previous live release
Just a Collection of Antiques and Curios and had
also played as a
session musician on the 1970 album
Dragonfly.

| TAYLOR SWIFT and THE CIVIL WARS - SAFE AND SOUND (2012) February 13th 2012 - my #9 favorite daily song for 67 days at age 41 living at Ave M South married to Valerie now for 4 years and Nicholas is 5. Safe & Sound" is a song by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift featuring country/folk duo The Civil Wars, and a promotional single from the soundtrack for the 2012 film, The Hunger Games.
The song entered the Billboard
Hot Digital Songs tally at number 19 with 136,000 sold
in two days. The song debuted at number 30 on the
Billboard Hot 100. In its second week it dropped
to number 31. After the release of the song's music video,
it re-entered the Hot 100 at number 56. Prior from the
released of the album, the song rebounds from number 71 to
number 35 in its 11th week. As of April 2012, the song has
sold more than a million copies in the United States.
"Safe & Sound" also appeared in some countries outside the U.S. The song peaked in Canada at number thirty-one, in Australia at number thirty-eight, and in UK at number sixty-seven. "Safe & Sound" attained its highest position worldwide in New Zealand at number eleven |
| PAUL McCARTNEY - BEAUTIFUL NIGHT (1997) Album: Flaming Pie (1997) I bought this brand new CD in July 1997 at age 26 while on the road with Marilyn now for 4 years. February 10th 1998 - my #3 favorite daily song for 73 days at age 27 on the road with Marilyn. August 1st 2003 - my #10 favorite daily song for 19 days living at Grandmas for a temporary period after moving back from Dalmeny in the process of buying my first home at Eastview.
Beautiful Night" is a song by
Paul McCartney and is the thirteenth track on his 1997
album
Flaming Pie. In December 1997, it was released as
the third and final
single from that album, peaking at #25 in the
UK Singles Chart The song was originally
recorded in August 1986 in
New York, but never released in the United States. That
version can be heard on the CD single as part of the "Oobu
Joobu" section. The song features the first
of two collaborations McCartney performed with
Ringo Starr on Flaming Pie (the second being
"Really Love You") as well as an orchestration by
George Martin, recorded at
Abbey Road Studios
Flaming Pie is the tenth solo studio album by Paul McCartney, first released in 1997. His first studio album in over four years, it was mostly recorded following McCartney's involvement in the highly successful The Beatles Anthology project. In Flaming Pie's liner notes McCartney said: "(Anthology) reminded me of The Beatles' standards and the standards that we reached with the songs. So in a way it was a refresher course that set the framework for this album." |
| PAUL REVERE & THE RAIDERS - SONG SELLER (1973) Album: Country Wine (1972) January 18th 1999 - my #5 favorite daily song for 14 days at age 28 learning this song from the Legend Of Paul Revere double CD set I had just bought while traveling on the road with Marilyn now for 5.5 years. Paul Revere & the Raiders is an American rock band that saw considerable U.S. mainstream success in the second half of the 1960s and early 1970s with hits such as "Kicks" (1966; ranked number 400 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time), "Hungry" (1966), "Him Or Me - What's It Gonna Be?" (1967) and the 1971 No. 1 single "Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian)". In 1972, The Raiders made one last attempt at a pop album, with Country Wine, but Columbia was sinking money into other acts, such as Blue Öyster Cult and Aerosmith, and Country Wine sank in the resulting quagmire. The band continued to release singles for Columbia between 1972 and 1975, including "Country Wine", "Powder Blue Mercedes Queen", "Song Seller", "Love Music" and "All Over You", with only "Country Wine" reaching the Top 40 (peaking at 30 on the Billboard chart). Weller and Smith had departed on New Year's Eve 1972, Weller being replaced by guitarist Doug Heath. As their chart career faded, The Raiders' concert fortunes dwindled, and they found themselves playing lounges and state fairs as an "oldies" act, a situation Revere found pleasing, but not Lindsay. Referring to a 1973 show at Knotts Berry Farm, Lindsay stated, "That (show featured) one of our bad sets. They only let us do thirty minutes and it's hard to construct a good show. (For this set) we didn't do any of the old (songs)." |
| QUEEN - KEEP YOURSELF ALIVE (1973) Album: Queen (1973)
Keep Yourself Alive" is a song by English
rock group
Queen. Written by guitarist
Brian May, it is the opening track on the band's debut
album
Queen (1973). It was released as Queen's first
single along with "Son and Daughter" as the B-side. "Keep
Yourself Alive" was largely ignored upon its release; it
failed to chart on either side of the Atlantic.
In 2008, Rolling Stone rated the song thirty-first on its list of "The 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time" According to Mark Hodkinson, author of Queen: The Early Years, "Keep Yourself Alive" was conceived on acoustic guitars during Queen's practice sessions at Imperial College and the garden at Ferry Road in 1970. At the time Queen had not yet found a permanent bassist; the group consisted of guitarist Brian May, singer Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor. In a radio special about their 1977 album News of the World, May said he had penned the lyrics thinking of them as ironic and tongue-in-cheek, but their sense was completely changed when Freddie Mercury sang them. A slightly shortened version of the original UK single version was eventually released in the US, and the Long-Lost Retake remained officially unreleased until the 1991 Hollywood Records US-only remastered version of the band's debut album, and again later on the 2011 2-disc remaster of A Night At The Opera. |
| RUSH - THE SPIRIT OF RADIO (1980) Album: Permanent Waves (1980) My best friend Nels Krauss loved Rush more than any other band and Geddy Lee was a big influence on his singing and songwriting styles. Nels and I recorded 2 albums of originals in 1989. I played this song live in 1992/1993 in my band The Shade. I saw Rush live in an outdoor concert setting in Nashville TN in 2002. I have had many people over the years say I either look like Geddy Lee or sing like him.
The Spirit of Radio" is a song released in 1980 by
Canadian rock band
Rush from their album
Permanent Waves. The song's name was inspired by
Toronto radio station
CFNY's slogan. The song was significant in the growing
popularity of the band. It is also the first song of the
1980s, since Permanent Waves was released on January
1, 1980, and being the opening track on the album. The band
had grazed the UK Top 40 two years earlier with "Closer
to the Heart", but when issued as a single in March
1980, "The Spirit of Radio" soon reached number 13 on the
UK singles chart. It remains their biggest UK hit to
date (the 7" single was a 3:00 edited version which has
never appeared on CD to date). "The Spirit of Radio" was
named one of
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock
and Roll, Rush's only such entry. The song was among
five Rush songs inducted into the
Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame on March 28, 2010.
The final lines of the song ("For the words of the profits were written on the studio wall.../Concert hall/And echoes with the sounds of salesmen") are an allusion to the famous final lyrics from the Simon and Garfunkel classic "The Sound of Silence": "...the words of the prophets/Are written on the subway walls/And tenement halls/And whispered in the sounds of silence." The album version includes the sound of a cheering crowd just after Lee sings "concert hall." It has since become a tradition in live shows for the arena lights to come up at this point and the audience to cheer, mimicking the effect. |
| RINGO STARR - HAVE YOU SEEN MY BABY (HOLD ON) (1973) Album: Ringo (1973) My family had the 8-track so when I became a Beatles fan this 8-track was in the home at my grandparents so likely started listening to it by 1982 at age 11. Eventually I had 3 copies of the record. July 10th 1990 - my #2 favorite daily song for 4 day at age 19 before entering 2nd year University and celebrating Ringo's 50th birthday.
Ringo is the third
album by
Ringo Starr, released in 1973 on
Apple Records. It peaked at #7
on the
UK Albums Chart and #2 on the
Billboard 200, and has been
certified
platinum by the
RIAA. In
Canada, it reached #1 on the
RPM national albums chart.
The album is noted for the
appearance of all four
Beatles, and for its numerous
guest stars, something which would
become a signature for Starr on many
of his future albums and tours.
As soon as Starr sent word to all his musician friends to help him in his new venture, they all responded positively. Taking part in the sessions were Marc Bolan, members of The Band, Billy Preston, Klaus Voormann, Nicky Hopkins, Harry Nilsson and Jim Keltner. Additionally, all three of his former bandmates appeared on and composed material for Ringo, and Starr, Lennon and Harrison appear together on the Lennon-penned song "I'm The Greatest". Not surprisingly, when word of the session hit the media, furious Beatles reunion rumours (the first of several) began spreading. It would be the closest to a Beatles reunion until Eric Clapton's wedding party on 19 May 1979, followed by the recording of Harrison's All Those Years Ago in 1981 and the The Beatles Anthology project in 1995. |

Sam Roberts in a haunting 6/4 musical meter. It is the

troubled man dealing with everyday life, and its video
reflects such. 2007 - Won a

Sam Roberts (born October 2, 1974) is a
Juno Award-winning
Canadian rock
singer-songwriter, whose 2001 debut release,
The Inhuman Condition, became one of the
bestselling
independent releases in
Quebec and
Canadian music history. The band's
second album,
Chemical City, was released in Canada in
April 2006. The first single was "The Gate",
which quickly shot to number one on Canadian
rock radio. The second single in Canada was "Bridge
to Nowhere", which won the
Juno Award for
Video of the Year in 2007. "With a Bullet",
the third song used to promote the album on
Canadian radio, received little attention and no
video was made for it.
