| JEFFREY GAINES - SCARES ME SO (1992) Album: Jeffrey Gaines (1992) I won a national music trivia contest in Canada in 1992 and in the batch of prizes included a copy of this CD. It quickly became one of my all time favorites! He opened for Melissa Etheridge in 1993 and I bought a ticket so I could see him open as a solo act just him and his acoustic. September 14th 1992 - my #2 favorite daily song for 42 days in 4th year University at age 21 after moving back to grandma's house after living on my own for 5 months on Cumberland Ave during my "anorexic" stage. This entire album is deep and and serious in music and lyrical content. The song first became my #1 favorite on September 14th 1992 the month I entered 4th year University. It was the first of 2 #1 songs for me by Jeffrey Gaines. This album has returned to #1 numerous times over the years.
Jeffrey Gaines is an American
singer-songwriter and
guitarist. Born in
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he was signed to the
Chrysalis Records label in 1990 and released his debut
album, Jeffrey Gaines, in 1992.
The first single off the critically acclaimed Jeffrey Gaines was "Hero In Me". Gaines performed that song live on Good Morning America and the song received some radio and MTV airplay |
| THE BANGLES - ETERNAL FLAME (1988) Album: Everything (1988) I got this cassette tape for Xmas 1988 at age 17 and one of my favorites on the album. January 16th 1989 - my #3 favorite daily song for 4 the week of turning 18 the year after highschool. Eternal Flame" is a song by The Bangles from their 1988 album Everything. It became a hit single, when released in 1989, peaking at number one in the charts in nine countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It was written by popular songwriters Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly and The Bangles' own Susanna Hoffs. With this song and "Walk Like An Egyptian", The Bangles became only the third all-girl group to score multiple no.1's in the United States. (The others are The Supremes, who had 12, and The Shirelles, with 2.). The Bangles are an American all-female band that originated in the early 1980s, scoring several hit singles during the decade |
| PAUL McCARTNEY - FOOTPRINTS (1986) Album: Press To Play (1986) I bought this album brand new immediately when it was released on cassette tape at age 15 in Grade 11. June 23rd 1989 - my #2 favorite daily song for 4 days at age 18 finishing classes at Nutana the year after graduating while celebrating Paul's 47th birthday. November 17th 2011 - my #4 favorite daily song for 38 days at age 40 playing all of Paul's music chronologically for a year while living at Ave M South and married to Valerie for 4 years.
Press to Play is the sixth solo studio album
by
Paul McCartney, released August 1986. It is notable for
being his first album of entirely new music since 1983's
Pipes of Peace and his first album released
internationally by long-time label
EMI
after a brief alliance with
Columbia Records in the US and Canada. After the box
office flop of the film
Give My Regards to Broad Street, McCartney decided
that it was time for a change of pace in his career. In an
attempt to give his music a more contemporary sound, he
joined forces with
Hugh Padgham, an in-demand producer famed for having
recorded
Peter Gabriel,
Genesis,
Phil Collins,
The Police, and
XTC.
Beginning in March 1985, McCartney began recording Press
To Play, having written several new songs, many with
current collaborator, former
10cc member
Eric Stewart. Guesting on the album would be
Pete Townshend,
Phil Collins,
Eddie Rayner (Split
Enz's keyboard maestro) and Stewart himself.
The album would not be finished until the end of the year, by which time only one song would see release from its sessions - the title track to the film Spies Like Us, joined by Phil Ramone in the producer's chair. "Spies Like Us", a non-album single backed by Wings' 1975 recording "My Carnival", proved to be a US top 10 hit (and McCartney's last), setting the stage for Press to Play. |
| ZAGER AND EVANS - LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE (1970) Album: Zager And Evans (1970) I discovered Zager and Evans through their major #1 song In The Year 2525. They were one-hit wonders but I had an album by them which did not include that song. So it turned out to be their 2nd album but wow I just loved it enough that I have boosted the album up my charts at least 3 different years. This was the 3rdd of 4 #1 hits Zager And Evans have had on my daily #1 chart. April 22nd 1987 - my #1 favorite daily song for 3 days. I really liked this with a powerful message in the lyrics making it one of my songs ever for lyrical content.
Zager & Evans was a
Lincoln, Nebraska,
rock-pop
duo of the late 1960s and early 1970s named after its
two members,
Denny Zager and
Rick Evans. "In the Year 2525", with lyrics by
Evans and music by Zager, warned of the dangers of
technology, portraying a future in which the
human race was destroyed by its own technological and
medical innovations. The last stanza of the song suggests
mankind undergoes a continuing cycle of
birth,
death and
rebirth.
"In the Year 2525" hit number one on the Hot 100 in 1969. It claimed the #1 spot for six weeks. It also topped the charts in the UK. It was number one on July 20, 1969, in the United States, the date of the first manned moon landing, by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. It continued to top the charts while the Woodstock Festival was going on, forever cementing "2525" in the minds of a generation. It was nominated for a special Hugo Award that same year. It sold over four million copies by 1970 and was awarded a gold disc by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in July 1969. RCA thought they were onto the "The Next Big Thing", but follow-up singles, such as "Mr. Turnkey" (a song about a rapist who nails his own wrist to the jail wall as punishment for his crime) went largely unnoticed by the public. "In the Year 2525" was their only Hot 100 entry. |
| THE BEATLES - SHE'S LEAVING HOME (1967) Album: Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) I first heard this album when I borrowed it from the public library when John Lennon died about January 1981 at age 10. She's Leaving Home" is a Lennon–McCartney song, released in 1967 on The Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. McCartney wrote and sang the verse and Lennon the chorus. This was one of a handful of songs of the Beatles in which the members did not play any instruments.
The day before McCartney wanted to work on the string
arrangement, he learned that
George Martin was not available to do the
score. He contacted
Mike Leander, who did it in Martin's place. It was the
first time a Beatles song was not arranged by Martin (and
the only time it was done with the Beatles' consent:
Phil Spector's orchestration of
Let It Be was done without McCartney's knowledge).
Martin was hurt by McCartney's actions, but he
produced the song and conducted the
string section. The harp was played by Sheila Bromberg,
the first female musician to appear on a Beatles record.
The stereo version of the song runs at a slower speed than the mono mix, and consequently is a semitone lower in pitch. This is mentioned in the booklet accompanying The Beatles in Mono CD box set, but no reason is given. A 2007 Mojo magazine article revealed the mono mix was sped up to make Paul sound younger and tighten the track. When discussing Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, composer Ned Rorem described "She's Leaving Home" as "equal to any song that Schubert ever wrote." In April 1967, McCartney visited Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys in L.A. to preview Sgt. Pepper, playing "She's Leaving Home" on the piano for him and his wife. "We both just cried," Wilson said. "It was beautiful |
| TERRY HOKNES - IN THE SPOTLIGHT OF LIFE (2001) Opus #306 - written in 1988
at age 17 As the new century began a new chapter in songwriting where the focus was more on recording polished songs but writing way less and very sporadic. I had written 500 songs by the age of 19 and had hit 1000 songs by the age of 25. But since then I can go over a year at a time without writing a song but really focusing in most cases on a more commercial type of polished song however I still venture into all possible genres. I continue to play and sing every part on all my songs and recordings. I hired Neil Meckelborg of Audio Art to record my songs in 2001. We started out recording a full album at their location downtown behind the Bus depot but eventually worked on recordings at Neil's private studio. In total we recorded 3 full albums of material of my songs and a full length album of songs I wrote with Marilyn Parney that I produced. Neil and I also worked on a Trooper hit song karaoke CD in 2001. I spent 18 months recording with Neil and over 40 songs and over $10,000.00 in studio bills I paid at that time to record the best quality audio ever on my songs. Neil had used Sonar Cakewalk so I learned how to use it and have used that now for a decade in my own studio. |
| MELLISA O'NEIL - I WON'T TAKE YOU BACK (2005) August 23rd 2006 - my #3 favorite daily song for 50 days at age 35 living on Eastview dating Valerie now for 6 months and Nicholas was 3 months old. Melissa O'Neil is the self-titled debut album by Canadian Idol winner Melissa O'Neil. It was released in Canada on November 22, 2005 through Sony BMG Music Canada. The album was produced by Rob Wells, Adam Alexander & Chris Perry, Jeff Dalziel and Executive Produced by Jennifer Hyland.[ Melissa Crystal O'Neil (born July 12, 1988) is a Canadian singer who was the winner of the third season of Canadian Idol in 2005. She was the first Canadian female winner and is the second youngest idol winner in the world, with the youngest being 2004 Australian Idol winner Casey Donovan . She is of Chinese, Irish and French heritage. Her self-titled debut album Melissa O'Neil, was released on November 22, 2005 and debuted at number sixteen on the Canadian albums chart. The second single from her album, "Let It Go" was released in late 2005 and peaked at number seven on the singles chart. On February 7, 2006, O'Neil embarked on her first solo tour in North Bay, Ontario, named the 'Let It Go Tour' after her second single. Her support act was her Canadian Idol runner-up, Rex Goudie. The third single release from O'Neil's album was "Speechless", which peaked number thirty-one, significantly lower than her two previous songs but still respectable nonetheless. In March 2006, her debut album was certified gold by the CRIA for 50,000 units shipped, and her first single "Alive" was covered by Becki Ryan in the movie Flicka. On September 16, 2006 O'Neil returned to the Canadian Idol stage during grand finale of its fourth season. Here she was surprised with the certified gold presentation disc of her debut album. |
| THE MOVE - THIS TIME TOMORROW (1970) Album: Shazam (1970) February 14th 2010 - my #5 favorite daily song for 35 days at age 39 living at Ave M South with Valerie now married 2.5 years and Nicholas was almost 4. The Move became one of my all time favorite bands after I became a fan of Roy Wood first. I bought most of their albums in 1985 but I never got Shazam until the 1990's. This band features the earliest songs and singing of Roy Wood as he became a huge star in England but no success at all in North America. Unfortunately I had no song charts yet in 1985 when I learned the majority of their songs.
Shazam is the second
album by
The Move, released in the UK in February 1970. The LP
marked a bridge between the band's quirky late '60s pop
singles and the progressive, long-form style of Roy Wood's
next project, the
Electric Light Orchestra. It was the last Move album to
feature the group's original lead vocalist, Carl Wayne.
Like Led Zeppelin's debut album, "Shazam" was basically a snippet of the Birmingham group's 1969 stage act captured on vinyl. A crunchy mix of California psychedelia, heavy metal riffs, thundering drums and quotations from classic composers, the disc was generally praised by critics -- "Rolling Stone" gave a glowing review in the spring of that year—and is generally regarded as the band's best LP.
The Move, from
Birmingham, England, were one of the leading British
rock bands of the 1960s. They scored nine
Top 20 UK singles in five years, but were among the most
popular British bands not to find any success in the United
States

| PAUL McCARTNEY - 3 LEGS (1971) Album: Ram (1971) I bought this album brand new possibly at Sears or Eatons in about 1983 at age 12. Unfortunately no chart data pre-1987 for learning any of Paul's albums when I originally bought them.
Ram is an album by
Paul McCartney and
Linda McCartney, released in 1971, the only album
credited to the pair. Set against the backdrop of the legal
action taking place in Britain's High Court with the
dissolution of
The Beatles partnership, following their
break-up the year before, Ram was the second of
two albums McCartney released between quitting The Beatles
and forming
Wings, whose future drummer
Denny Seiwell played on the record.
Three singles were released from Ram: the
American number 1 hit "Uncle
Albert/Admiral Halsey", the minor British
hit "The
Back Seat of My Car", and "Eat
at Home", which appeared in Europe, Japan
and Australia. The album was reissued on 21 May
2012.
After the release of the commercially successful (though, critically, poorly received) debut McCartney, Paul and Linda went on a lengthy holiday and spent much time on their farm on the Mull of Kintyre, Scotland. It was during this period that Paul, often with his wife's input − her self-confessed lack of musical ability notwithstanding − composed the songs that would feature on Ram. The couple flew to New York City in the fall of 1970 to record the new material. Lacking a working band, they held auditions for musicians, bringing some in under the guise of a session to record a commercial jingle. Denny Seiwell was recruited on drums, David Spinozza was tapped for guitar duties (later replaced by Hugh McCracken when Spinozza became unavailable), and Marvin Stamm was featured on flugelhorn on "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey". Although it was a collaborative project, Linda's vocal duties were mostly limited to backing Paul, who sang almost all of the lead parts. Linda sang co-lead vocals on "Long Haired Lady", however. |
| SUM 41 - WE'RE ALL TO BLAME (2004)
Album: Chuck (2004) My favorite band of the 21st Century. I have seen them in concert 3 times in Saskatoon, SK including taking my younger brother Coltin to a show at Saskplace where I felt like playing airdrums for the entire concert. November 25th 2004 - my #5 favorite daily song for 16 days at age 33 living at Eastview with Michelle/Brianna.
Chuck is the third
studio album from
Canadian
rock band
Sum 41. The album was released on October
12, 2004. It is the band's last album to feature
lead guitarist
Dave Baksh. He left the band on May 11, 2006
to pursue his own career with his new band
Brown Brigade. The album has sold 12 million
copies worlwide. The album is named
after a
UN peacekeeper Chuck Pelletier, who was in
the
Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the
band was filming a documentary for
War Child Canada. Fighting broke out
during the filming and Chuck helped the band
evacuate from their hotel during the fighting
(Chuck was staying in the same hotel during that
time). The album received positive reviews from
critics, and it won
a Juno Award in 2005 for Best Rock Album
of the Year. The album was certified
gold in Japan,
platinum in Canada and gold in the United
States. In an online poll, "Pieces" was voted
the favorite song, with "We're All to Blame"
coming in second
Sum 41 is a Canadian punk rock band from Ajax, Ontario. The band was formed in 1996 and currently consists of members Deryck Whibley (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Tom Thacker (lead guitar, backing vocals), Jason McCaslin (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Steve Jocz (drums). In 1999, the band signed an international record deal with Island Records. The band released their debut album, All Killer, No Filler in 2001. The band achieved mainstream success with their first single from the album, "Fat Lip", which reached number-one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and remains the band's most successful single to date. |
| THE RUMOUR - HOLY MOURNING (1972) song by Shade Smith Album: 20 Studio One Hits (1972) September 1988 - age 17 the fall after graduating high school however I chose to take another full year of classes at Nutana just for something to do and landed up having way more credits than I needed for University. I was very busy writing songs everyday at this time and also publishing my monthly fanzine called Yesterday and Today about the history of rock music which I sold in local record shops in tribute to my great grandmother "Nanny" (Marie Brown) who had passed away on July 14th 1988. September 17th 2010 - my #7 favorite daily song for 32 days at age 39 living at Ave M South married to Valerie for 3 years and Nicholas was now 4 and performing a full year now at the Dueling Pianos show with Mark Zielke. This was a unique album from New Zealand showing many up and coming music stars in various genres. My grandma had this record but not sure if she brought it back from New Zealand as a souvenir OR if she just had bought it at a local garage sale but I eventually took it and loved some of the songs on this rare album. |
| MOUNTAIN - MISSISSIPPI QUEEN (1970) hit #21 Classic early hard rock radio hit. I learned this song from my mothers album copy she had bought.
"Mississippi Queen" is a song by the American rock
band
Mountain. Considered a rock classic, it was their most
successful single, reaching #21 in the
Billboard Hot 100 record chart in 1970. "Mississippi
Queen" was also a hit for
Ozzy Osbourne in 2005 and has appeared in several
soundtracks.
"Mississippi Queen" was recorded during the sessions for Mountain's 1970 debut album Climbing!. Drummer Corky Laing recalled that he had developed some of the lyrics and the drum part prior to his joining the band Later, when guitarist Leslie West was looking for lyrics for a guitar part he had written, Laing pulled out "The Queen" and the two worked out the song together. When the group proceeded to record "Mississippi Queen", bassist and producer Felix Pappalardi insisted on numerous takes. Growing weary, Laing started using the cowbell to count off the song. Pappalardi liked it so much he left it in the mix, creating the instantly recognizable intro to the song Mountain is an American rock band that formed in Long Island, New York in 1969. Originally comprising vocalist and guitarist Leslie West, bassist/vocalist Felix Pappalardi, keyboardist Steve Knight and drummer N. D. Smart, the band broke up in 1972 and has reunited frequently since 1973, remaining active today. Best known for the song "Mississippi Queen", Mountain is one of many bands to be commonly credited as having influenced the development of heavy metal music in the 1970s |
| THE BEE GEES - LONELY DAYS (1971) hit #3
Lonely Days" is a
ballad by the
Bee Gees. Written by
Barry,
Robin and
Maurice Gibb, and featured on their album
2 Years On, in the US it reached #3, their highest
chart up to that point.
Atco released it a few weeks ahead because the Bee Gees
were touring the US. The record success helped establish the
band as expert pop stylists. It was their first Top Five hit
in the US, peaking at number three in the
Billboard Hot 100 and reaching number one in the
Cashbox and
Record World charts.
In many interviews, the Bee Gees have said that they recorded this song and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" in the same night that they reunited. This song was sung by all three together to Maurice's piano and bass and Bill Shepherd's string and horn arrangement, the slow verses contrast nicely with the pounding chorus. The song incorporated the innovative structure and knack for changing tempos exemplified by the second side of The Beatles' Abbey Road album, released the previous year and a clear influence on this single. "Lonely Days" shifts back and forth between a piano-and-strings-dominated verse reminiscent of "You Never Give Me Your Money" and "Golden Slumbers," and an up-tempo stomping chorus that echoes "Carry That Weight"; perhaps as an acknowledgment of the debt, as the record approaches its fade-out, the lead singer's voice is filtered to sound like John Lennon's. |
| ACE OF BASE - BEAUTIFUL LIFE (1995) hit #15
Beautiful Life" is the title of a song by
Swedish band
Ace of Base, released in the Autumn of 1995. In
North America it was the first single released from the
band's
The Bridge; in
Europe it followed "Lucky
Love".
The song was written on January 1, 1994 by band member Jonas Berggren while he was in the Canary Islands. His earlier song "The Sign" had just hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. Berggren incorporated gospel elements into the song, and the single proved quite successful worldwide, reaching #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December, 1995 and on the UK Singles Chart. It also hit #1 on the U.S. Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. The video for the song was directed by Richard Heslop, who would go on to direct the band's later video for "Never Gonna Say I'm Sorry". The video included computer-generated bubbles which whisked the band from place to place. J.D. Considine of Spin magazine said in a writeup about The Bridge that "the real genius of Ace of Base lies not with perky singing... but with the ability to make melancholy sound so damned appealing." The evaluation continues to narrow in scope as he continues to say "even the cheerfully titled 'Beautiful life' dampens its club-savvy stomp with a heartbreaking minor key chorus."
Ace of Base is a pop band based in
Gothenburg,
Sweden. Its original lineup consisted of
Ulf "Buddha" Ekberg, and three siblings,
Jonas "Joker" Berggren,
Malin "Linn" Berggren and
Jenny Berggren. They released four studio
albums between 1993 and 2002, which sold in
excess of 30 million copies worldwide.
Happy Nation / The Sign is one of the best-selling debut albums of all time, and was certified nine times platinum in the United States. It was the first debut album to produce three number 1 singles on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart: "All That She Wants", "The Sign" and "Don't Turn Around" |
| JANET JACKSON - DOESN'T REALLY MATTER (2000)
Album: All For You (2001) July 22nd 2000 - my #1 song in the top 40 for 18 weeks straight making it my #1 favorite top 40 hit of 2000. Such great catchy hooks throughout the verses and chorus. July 25th 2000 - my #1 favorite daily song for 45 days when I was 29. This was the 3rd and last time she had my #1 daily song. It was my #4 favorite daily song of 2000. It was my favorite song when I moved from Saskatoon to Dalmeny, SK to live with my girlfriend for the next 3 years. "Doesn't Really Matter" is a song recorded by American R&B-pop singer Janet Jackson for the soundtrack to the 2000 film Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. Released as a single in May 2000, a slightly modified version of the track later appeared on Jackson's seventh studio album, All for You, which was released nearly a year later in April 2001. The song hit #1 in USA and #2 in Canada in 2000. |
| THE BEATLES - RUN FOR YOUR LIFE (1965) Album: Rubber Soul (1965)
Run for Your Life" is a song recorded by
The Beatles for their 1965 album
Rubber Soul. The song, while credited to "Lennon–McCartney",
was primarily a
John Lennon composition.
The song's lyrics establish a threatening tone towards the singer's unnamed girlfriend (referred to throughout the song as "little girl"), claiming "I'd rather see you dead, little girl, than to be with another man." The line was taken from an early Elvis Presley song, "Baby, Let's Play House" (written by Arthur Gunter). Lennon designated this song as his "least favourite Beatles song" in a 1973 interview and later said it was the song he most regretted writing. He also stated that the song was one of George Harrison's favourite songs on Rubber Soul at that time, despite Lennon's dislike of it. Lennon would revisit this theme in a more apologetic fashion with his post-Beatles song "Jealous Guy". |
| ABBA - VOULEZ VOUS (1979) Album: Voulez Vous (1979) Voulez-Vous is the sixth studio album by Swedish pop group ABBA, released in 1979. It was the first ABBA album to be recorded at Polar Studios in Stockholm, and the only ABBA album to include a studio recording made outside Sweden. Some of the songs were secretly written and demoed at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, and the title track was recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami. Voulez-Vous was first released on CD in 1984. The album has been digitally remastered and reissued four times; first in 1997, then in 2001 and in 2005 as part of the The Complete Studio Recordings box set, and yet again in 2010 for the Voulez-Vous Deluxe Edition. ABBA was a Swedish pop/rock/disco group formed in Stockholm in 1972, comprising Agnetha Fältskog, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. ABBA is an acronym of the first letters of the band members' first names and is sometimes stylized as the registered trademark ᗅᗺᗷᗅ. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of pop music, topping the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1982. They are also known for winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, giving Sweden its first victory in the history of the contest and being the most successful group ever to take part in the contest. |
| ABBA - LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME (1980) Album: Super Trouper (1980) I had known this song since the album came out right in 1981 at age 10. A great anthem to close off the album. I used to use my Smurfs and Star Wars figures to pose concerts at this time and this song was likely one of the "performances". My mother bought the album in spring of 1981 but then we had an exchange named Lena stay at grandmas house for the summer and she gave us another copy of the album as a gift.
Super Trouper is the seventh studio album by
Swedish pop group
ABBA, first released in 1980. It features the No.1
singles "The
Winner Takes It All" and "Super
Trouper". The album became the biggest-selling of 1980
in the UK. Led by the international hit "The
Winner Takes It All", Super Trouper was the group's
sixth chart-topping album in the UK. It was also the
best-selling album in Britain for 1980. Super Trouper
was first released on CD in 1983 by Atlantic Records, again
in the 1980s by Polar International, and in the 1990s by
Polydor in the USA. The album has been reissued in digitally
remastered form four times; first in 1997, then in 2001,
again in 2005 as part of the
The Complete Studio Recordings
box set and as a Deluxe Edition (containing a bonus DVD)
in 2011. The previous year's divorce between Björn and
Agnetha was explored in "The Winner Takes It All", and the
members' lives in Stockholm high society circles coloured
the lyrics for "On and On and On". Other well-known songs on
the album include the hit single title track "Super
Trouper", as well as the electro-dance of "Lay
All Your Love on Me". Probably due to the disco
backlash of the time, the album saw ABBA returning to a more
straightforward pop sound, as opposed to the preceding (and
noticeably more dance-oriented)
Voulez-Vous album. The album closed with "The Way
Old Friends Do", which was recorded live a year earlier

| ALAN PARSONS PROJECT - SOME OTHER TIME (1977) Album: I Robot (1977) September 23rd 1989 - my #1 favorite daily song for 3 days at age 18 in 1st year University at St Peters College in Muenster, SK.
I Robot is the second album by
progressive rock band
The Alan Parsons Project, engineered by
Alan Parsons and
Eric Woolfson in 1977. It was released by Arista Records
in 1977 and re-released on
CD in 1984 and 2007. It was intended to be based on the
I, Robot stories written by
Isaac Asimov, and Woolfson actually spoke with Asimov,
who was enthusiastic about the idea. As the rights already
had been granted to a TV/movie company, the album's title
was altered slightly by removing the comma, and the theme
and lyrics were made to be more generically about robots
rather than specific to the Asimov universe.
The cover inlay read: "I ROBOT...THE STORY OF THE RISE OF THE MACHINE AND THE DECLINE OF MAN, WHICH PARADOXICALLY COINCIDED WITH HIS DISCOVERY OF THE WHEEL...AND A WARNING THAT HIS BRIEF DOMINANCE OF THIS PLANET WILL PROBABLY END, BECAUSE MAN TRIED TO CREATE ROBOT IN HIS OWN IMAGE." The title of the final track, "Genesis Ch.1 v.32," follows this theme by implying a continuation to the story of Creation, since the first chapter of Genesis only has 31 verses. The album cover photo of the band members is of the criss-crossing escalator tubes in the circular Terminal 1 building of Charles de Gaulle airport outside Paris. |
| A-HA - TRAIN OF THOUGHT (1985)
Album: Hunting High And Low (1985)
Train of Thought" is a song by Norwegian
new wave band
A-ha. It was released as the fourth single off the
Hunting High and Low album. The lyrics for this song
were based on the existentialist authors and poets
Gunvor Hofmo,
Knut Hamsun and
Fyodor Dostoevsky - Pål's favourites at the time.
It was A-ha's third consecutive top ten single in the UK, reaching No. 8. It was not a pop hit in the United States, but a 12" single featuring a remix of the song appeared on the Hot Dance Club Play charts. The single sold 500,000 copies worldwide. Another remix by Steve Thompson was released in 1989. Hunting High and Low is the debut album by Norwegian new wave band A-ha. Released on 1 June 1985 through Warner Bros. Records, the album was a huge commercial success selling more than 10 million units worldwide, peaking at #15 in the United States Billboard 200 and reaching high positions on charts worldwide. The album was recorded at Eel Pie Studios in Twickenham, produced by Tony Mansfield, John Ratcliff and Alan Tarney. In all, five singles from the album were released, though not all were released internationally: "Take on Me", "Love Is Reason", "The Sun Always Shines on T.V.", "Train of Thought" and "Hunting High and Low". The group was nominated for best new artist at the Grammy Awards in 1986, making A-ha the first Norwegian band to be nominated for a Grammy. |
