| STARS ON 45 (STARS ON) - 45 STARS GET READY (1981) Album: Stars On Long Play 2 (1981) March 10th 1990 - my #5 favorite daily song for 1 day at age 19 while living at the Monastery at St Peters College in Muenster, SK for 1st year University. This group may be the reason I became an entertainer. The first time I performed singing in front of an audience of strangers was in the summer of 1981 at age 10 singing along with their entire 15 minute Beatles medley which I had memorized as I was in full gear as a Beatles fanatic after John Lennon died. At the time I created a fictional band called The Recorders which consisted of myself, my sister Leslie and my best friend Zender Millar who were all members who in an alternative world we recorded all The Beatles songs ourselves in their place. I designed all the album covers and song lists at that time. I loved the 3 Stars On Long Play albums and bought them all immediately when they were released. It was also a great learning experience to hear many classic songs for the first time before I had even heard the originals.
Stars on 45 was a
Dutch novelty
pop act that was briefly very popular in the
United Kingdom, throughout Europe, the
United States and
Australia in the early 1980s. The group later shortened
its name to Stars On in the U.S., while in the U.K.
and Ireland it was known as Starsound. The band,
which consisted solely of studio session musicians under the
direction of Jaap Eggermont, formerly of
Golden Earring, popularized the
medley, by recreating hit songs as faithfully as
possible and stringing them together, with a common tempo
and relentless underlying drum track. The point was to
provide a danceable
disco record which used familiar tunes—a technique that
was also used in the
Hooked on Classics series of recordings released by
RCA Records and K-Tel Records.

| TOAD THE WET SPROCKET - IS IT FOR ME (1991) Album: Fear (1991) October 19th 1991 - my #2 favorite daily song for 2 days at age 20 in 3rd year University after for the first time ever I checked out an all current alternative rock video program on TV and found lots of new songs I liked including this one which made me discover this band - one of my favorites of the 1990's. June 3rd 2005 - my #3 favorite daily song for 74 days at age 34 living at Eastview and played this album everyday when I went to bed living alone after just breaking up with Michelle.
fear is the third studio
album released by
Toad the Wet Sprocket, their second album for
Columbia Records, released in 1991. Toad the Wet
Sprocket's first album,
Bread & Circus, was self-recorded and released.
Their second album,
Pale, was self-recorded and the first released by
Columbia. The album was preceded by the single "Is It
For Me", which failed to chart well. Its best known single,
the second commercial release "All I Want", which reached
#15 on the
Billboard Hot 100, helped launch their career. On
November 6, 1992, fear was certified
gold and on September 1, 1994, it was certified platinum
Toad the Wet Sprocket is an American alternative rock band formed in 1986. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss. The band enjoyed chart success in the 1990s with the singles "Walk on the Ocean", "All I Want", "Something's Always Wrong", and "Fall Down", among others. The band broke up in 1998 to pursue other projects but in 2006 began touring the United States as a band in small-venue, short-run tours each summer. In December 2010, the band announced their official reunion as a full-time working band and have started writing songs for their first new studio album since their 1997 Columbia Records release Coil |
| THE BEATLES - I'LL GET YOU (1963) Album: Past Masters 1 (1987) B side of She Loves You in 1963. I first heard it on the US album release The Beatles Second Album (1964) around 1982 at age 11.
"I'll Get You" is a song by
The Beatles, written by
Lennon–McCartney, and released by
The Beatles as the
B-side of their 1963 single "She
Loves You". The song was initially titled "Get You in
the End".
Typical of the Beatles vocal style of that period John Lennon and Paul McCartney sing in unison for the majority of the track, allowing the few occasions when they do harmonise to stand out. But unlike most Beatles songs of the time there is no lead guitar break; the lead guitar being virtually reduced to a second rhythm guitar. The most prominent instruments in the track are McCartney's "plumply rounded bass", and Lennon's harmonica, which was overdubbed in a rush as session time ran out. Beatles writer Bill Harry credits Lennon as main composer although McCartney claims it was a 50 / 50 collaboration. McCartney recalls using Lennon's Menlove Avenue home as the writing base for the song; this was rare as Lennon's Aunt Mimi, whom he still lived with at the time, was disapproving of the Beatles. |
| JEFFERSON STARSHIP - MIRACLES (1975) hit #3
Miracles" is the title of a song written by
Marty Balin and originally recorded by
Jefferson Starship, appearing on their 1975 album
Red Octopus.
"Miracles" peaked at #3 for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the highest-charting single the band ever recorded under the name "Jefferson Starship," and also charting higher than any single the band had recorded in its previous incarnation as "Jefferson Airplane". (However, the band went on to have three #1 hits under its later incarnation as "Starship".) In order to secure more radio airplay for the song, the full-length album version of "Miracles" (6 minutes, 52 seconds long) was cut by more than half its length for the single, which was released at a length of 3 minutes, 25 seconds. This edit was done not only for length, but to remove the sexual reference in the line "I had a taste of the real world when I went down on you, girl." The song was inspired in part by the Indian guru Sathya Sai Baba, whose followers believe him to have been a miracle worker. It was also inspired in part by a woman Balin was in love with at the time. According to Jeff Tamarkin's book Got a Revolution! The Turbulent Flight of Jefferson Airplane, Balin labored over the song "for some time" and "slowly but deliberately crafted" it However, author Robert Yehling has written that Balin wrote the song in 30 minutes or wrote the lyrics in 45 minutes. According to Balin, when he presented the song to the rest of the band members, "Everybody went, 'I don't know about that, that's pretty weird, man.' I was really worried; nobody liked it. But I told myself, after about five days, Maybe they're wrong." Commenting on the band's recording of "Miracles", Jeff Tamarkin wrote: "[Larry] Cox nailed the production -- there isn't a wasted, out of place note. Strings glisten, the keyboard sound is contemporary and Grace [Slick] and Paul [Kantner]'s harmonies are relatively traditional. [David] Freiberg came up with the memorable signature organ riff that opens the song and Craig [Chaquico] with a fresh supply of delicious guitar sounds. Marty is at his most open, crooning his words of love like he hasn't in years -- without a hint of irony or awkwardness he uses the word 'baby' at least 25 times ...." Upon the single's release, Billboard magazine listed "Miracles" among its Top Single Picks, indicating that the review panel predicted it to reach the top 30 of the Hot 100. The magazine commented, "With a top 10 LP under their belts, the rejuvenated Starship (with Marty Balin back as a full fledged member) come up with the kind of easy rocker that highlighted the early Airplane days. Vocal interchanges between Balin and Grace Slick the high point of the record |
| SPIRIT - ONCE WITH YOU (1976) Album: Farther Along (1976) April 24th 1988 - my #1 favorite daily song for 7 days at age 17 while in Grade 12. I was on a classical music tour to Banff, SK to the music resort with the Saskatoon Youth Orchestra rooming with violinist Darcy Burback. I listened to this album non-stop on that trip. I hung out a lot with Rosalind at that time.
Farther Along was the third album that
Spirit released through
Mercury Records. Though
Jay Ferguson was missing from the lineup, it is
generally considered to be their first "reunion" album.
Out of the four albums that Spirit recorded for Mercury in
the mid-70s, this one is the least influenced by
Randy California's time in
Hawaii. However, it isn't too dissimilar from the
previous two albums in that regard, though the song
structures are very tight throughout. Consequently, it also
bears more than a passing resemblance to
Clear at times, probably because of
John Locke's presence in the group. It is particularly
cherished by fans of that album. The album also includes a
notable version of Nature's Way, which is arranged
for a
chamber orchestra.
Spirit was an American jazz/hard rock/progressive rock/psychedelic band founded in 1967, based in Los Angeles, California. The original lineup of the group evolved from an earlier Los Angeles band, The Red Roosters, which included Randy California (guitars, vocals), Mark Andes (bass) and Jay Ferguson (vocals, percussion). With the addition of California's stepfather Ed Cassidy (drums), and keyboard player John Locke the new band was originally named the Spirits Rebellious (after a book by Khalil Gibran) but was soon shortened simply to Spirit. In 1966 Randy California had also played with Jimi Hendrix (then known as Jimmy James) in his band, The Blue Flame |
| MICHAEL JACKSON - EARTH SONG (1995) August 7th 2009 - my #1 favorite daily song for 24 days at age 38 living at Ave M and married to Valerie almost 2 years and I got hired full time this week to be in the Dueling Pianos show at Tusq/Staqatto. I went on a Michael Jackson listening spree when he passed away on June 25th 2009 and this was my favorite of all his songs.
Earth Song" is the third single from
Michael Jackson's album
HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. It is the
fifth song on the second disc of the album. It is a ballad
that incorporates elements of blues, gospel and opera.
Jackson had a long-standing history of releasing socially
conscious material such as "We
Are the World", "Man
in the Mirror" and "Heal
the World". However, "Earth Song" was the first that
overtly dealt with the environment and animal welfare. The
song was written and composed by Jackson; the task of
production was split between Jackson,
David Foster and
Bill Bottrell.
"Earth Song" was accompanied by a lavish music video shot on four geographical regions. It centered around the destruction and rebirth of Earth and went on to receive a Grammy nomination in 1997. The song was a top five hit in most European countries. In the United Kingdom, it remains Jackson's best-selling single and was the country's 1995 Christmas number-one single. "Earth Song" was not released as a single in the United States. Jackson went on to receive recognition from various animal and environmental organizations. The song was paired-up with the poem "Planet Earth" (previously released on Michael Jackson's This Is It, in 2009) and released as a song in the remix album Immortal in 2011. |
| PAUL MCCARTNEY & WINGS - TOMORROW (1971) Album: Wild Life (1971) I got this album used and remember listening to it a lot in 1984 at age 13. August 30th 2011 - my #7 favorite daily song for 37 days at age 40 while living at Ave M South with Valerie now married 4 years and Nicholas is 5.
Wild Life is the debut album by
Wings. Paul and
Linda McCartney had worked with drummer
Denny Seiwell on their prior album,
Ram, and they added
Denny Laine, the former leader of the
Moody Blues, to that trio to become Wings. With a
fresh set of McCartney/McCartney tunes, in August 1971 the
newly formed Wings recorded their debut in slightly more
than a week, with the mindset that it had to be instant and
raw in order to capture the freshness and vitality of a live
studio recording. Five of the eight songs were recorded in
one take. Paul McCartney would later cite the quick
recording schedule of
Bob Dylan as an inspiration for this.
The album was rehearsed at McCartney's recording studio in Scotland dubbed Rude Studio, which Paul and Linda had used to make demos of songs that would be used in albums from Wild Life to Driving Rain, and recorded at Abbey Road Studios with Tony Clarke engineering. Paul can be heard saying "Take it, Tony" at the beginning of "Mumbo". On the promotional album, "The Complete Audio Guide To The Alan Parsons Project", Alan Parsons discusses how he did a rough mix of "I Am Your Singer" that Paul liked so much, he used it for the final mix on the album. Paul can be seen at Rude Studio in the 2001 documentary 'Wingspan'. Paul handled all of the lead vocals, sharing those duties with Linda on "I Am Your Singer" and "Some People Never Know |
| THE GO GO'S - AUTOMATIC (1981) Album: Beauty And The Beat (1981) I saw The Go Go's on TV on Solid Gold on January 16th 1982 the day after my 11th birthday and they became the very first current group that I liked. My mom bought me the album in early January 1982 and we went and saw them in concert that summer in Vancouver BC.. I still have the concert tickets 30 years later. I used to play with smurfs that year and they would pretend to have concerts while I listened to this album over and over. June 9th 1988 - my #4 favorite daily song for 4 days at age 17 the month I finished high school. Beauty and the Beat is the debut album from Californian all-female band The Go-Go's. Released in 1981 on the IRS Records label, the album was preceded by the single "We Got the Beat," which became a massive club hit in Europe and, later, the United States. When the album was eventually released, it steadily climbed the Billboard 200 chart, ultimately peaking at number one, where it remained for six consecutive weeks. The L.P. sold in excess of three million copies and reached double platinum status, making it one of the most successful debut albums of all time. It is now widely considered as one of the cornerstone albums of 1980s new wave music. It was the first, and so far the only, album entirely written and performed by an all-female band to top the charts In 2003, the album was ranked number 413 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This album was chosen as one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Editor's Picks of 2005. The album opener, "Our Lips Are Sealed," has been covered over the years by numerous artists, and remains a staple of '80s playlists. It is frequently cited as one of the Top 100 and Top 50 songs of the '80s. Rolling Stone magazine has named it one of the Top 100 Pop Singles of all time. "We Got the Beat" has been named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. |
| TERRY HOKNES - RATHER DO (1996)
Opus
#990
I wrote my first song in 1982 at age 11 in Grade 6. I would sporadically write 18 few songs over the next 4 years. Starting with my 19th song (Opus #19) I began writing on a very regular basis starting in December 1986 in Grade 11 at Aden Bowman. This included writing over 58 songs with my best friend Nels Krauss over the period of 1986-1992. I wrote 97 songs in 1987 and then 215 songs in 1988. By the time I graduated high school at age 17 I was up to Opus #268. I wrote another 178 songs in 1989. By the time I celebrated my 19th birthday I was up to Opus #524. At that time I was in first year University living in Muenster, SK in residence at St Peters College at the monastery. I met a poet from New York named Philip Murray who I collaborated with writing music to his words 91 songs in total. I wrote my 1000th song the week I turned 25 in January 1996. |

| THE SHANGRI-LA'S - PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE (1966) hit #59 in 1966 Using Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata for a dramatic background make this an odd but effective melancholy recording featuring their young female voices to express longing. January 21st 1991 - my #1 favorite daily song for 9 days just after turning 20 in 2nd year University. The Shangri-Las were an American pop girl group of the 1960s. Between 1964 and 1966 they charted with often heartbreaking teen melodramas, and remain best known for "Leader of the Pack" and "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)". |
| SHEREE - WOMAN'S WORK (1989) Album: Sheree (1989) I loved this song so much it ranked as my favorite Canadian song ever for a long time. Such powerful vocals throughout this song draws you in to listen more. November 11th 1989 - my #4 favorite daily song for 4 days at age 18 while living at the monastery in Muenster, SK at St Peters College for 1st year University. January 3rd 1990 - my #6 favorite daily song for 2 days the week before turning 19. I loved this song so much that I asked and got this cassette tape album for Christmas 1989 making a quick return to my top 10.
Sheree Jeacocke (born 1958,
Toronto,
Ontario) is a
Canadian
singer-songwriter.
During the early 1980s Jeacocke starred in the CBC-TV musical The King Of Friday Night and worked as a backup singer for Gordon Lightfoot, Rita MacNeil, Glass Tiger and Kim Mitchell. In 1985 Jeacocke released her first single "You Get To Me". In 1986 she released her first album Feel It and was nominated for "Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year" at the 17th annual Juno Awards, in Canada. Much of her financial success in music was in singing jingles for many 1980s Canadian broadcast advertisements. She signed a contract with BMG in 1989 and released her second album Sheree. The first single, "Woman's Work" became her biggest hit as a lead vocalist, hitting the Canadian Top 10 in February 1990. The song was later remade by Tina Arena, among others. In 1990, Sheree participated in the Best Guy movie soundtrack, released in Japan, on which she sings "Best Guy", "Woman's Work", "Bang On" and "Where Do We Go From Here?". In 1993, she released her third and last album, Miss My Love, whose singles were the title track and "Serious". |
| THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE - LITTLE WING (1967) Album: Axis Bold As Love (1967) My mother had bought Smash Hits likely new in 1969 and I acquired it and most likely knew the album by 1984 at the latest at age 13.
Little Wing" is a song written by
Jimi Hendrix. It was first recorded by
The Jimi Hendrix Experience on their
1967 album
Axis: Bold as Love. It is ranked #366 on
Rolling Stone magazine's list of "the
500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
Hendrix spoke to a Swedish journalist about the song in January 1968, saying "Well, that was one song on there we did a lot of sound on, you know. We put the guitar through the Leslie speaker of an organ, and it sounds like jelly bread, you know….It’s based on a very, very simple American Indian style, you know, very simple. I got the idea like, when we was in Monterey, and I just happened to…just looking at everything around. So I figured that I take everything I see around and put it maybe in the form of a girl maybe, something like that, you know, and call it 'Little Wing', in other words, just fly away. Everybody really flying and they’s really in a nice mood, like the police and everybody was really great out there. So I just took all these things an put them in one very, very small little matchbox, you know, into a girl and then do it. It was very simple, you know. That’s one of the very few ones I like." |
| THE BAY CITY ROLLERS - REMEMBER (SHA LA LA LA) (1974) Album: Rollin' (1974) June 1st 2007 - my #2 favorite daily song for 25 days at age 36 when I reunited with Valerie before getting married. Nicholas was 15 months old.
Rollin', released in 1974, was the first
full-length
album by
Scotland's
Bay City Rollers. The album included three
British chart hits ("Remember", "Shang-a-Lang",
"Summerlove Sensation") and the debut of "Saturday Night",
never a British hit yet a #1
smash in America.
While the album itself was not issued in America, several of the songs would later appear on the band's self-titled 1975 US debut The Bay City Rollers were a Scottish pop band who were most popular in the 1970s. The British Hit Singles & Albums noted that they were "tartan teen sensations from Edinburgh", and were "the first of many acts heralded as the 'Biggest Group since The Beatles' and one of the most screamed-at teeny-bopper acts of the 1970s". For a relatively brief but fervent period (nicknamed "Rollermania"), they were worldwide teen idols. The group's line-up featured numerous changes over the years, but the classic line-up during its heyday included guitarists Eric Faulkner and Stuart Wood, singer Les McKeown, bassist Alan Longmuir, and drummer Derek Longmuir |
| THE BEATLES - ANOTHER GIRL (1965) Album: Help (1965) I bought the US version of the Help album on vinyl in 1981 at age 10 shortly after John Lennon was killed. I think I used to play it on my Mickey Mouse record player in grandmas living room on the floor.
Another Girl" is a song by
the Beatles released in 1965 on the album
Help! and included in the film of the same name. The
song was written by
Paul McCartney but credited to
Lennon–McCartney.
McCartney wrote the song while holidaying in Hammamet, a resort in Tunisia.with an up-tempo swing-beat that the writer favoured ("Can't Buy Me Love", "She's a Woman") the song opens with a short refrain, powered by block vocal harmonies, that segues straight into the verse, which is constructed on the blues-mode chord changes the group currently favoured. The bridge theme makes a sudden key change up a minor third from A to C (a harmonic strategy also used on the record's next track "You're Going to Lose That Girl") and features more close three-part harmonies as the aggressively sung verse's apparent threat to a jealous girl turns into a sweet tribute to the "other" girl who "will always be my friend". The Beatles recorded the song on 15 February 1965, having also worked on "Ticket to Ride" and "I Need You". The backing track was quickly recorded in a single take. George Harrison added a guitar "flourish" at the end which was omitted from the final mix: McCartney added lead guitar the next day. This is one of several Beatles songs recorded at the time on which McCartney played lead guitar in addition to his usual bass. Four-track recording allowed the group to refine songs' arrangements in the studio and McCartney often had clear ideas about the guitar lines he wanted. He also contributed lead guitar to "Ticket to Ride" and played an electric guitar duet with Harrison on "The Night Before". The song was mixed down on 18 February and again on 23 February |
| BUCKCHERRY - RESCUE ME (2008) Album: Black Butterfly (2008) May 4th 2009 - my #3 favorite daily song for 27 days at age 38 almost married 1 year. Black Butterfly is the fourth studio album by American hard rock band Buckcherry. The album was released on September 12, 2008 in Japan, Canada, and the United Kingdom while being released on September 16 in the United States. It had been in production since late 2007. The limited fan edition was included with two demo songs, "Nothing" and "Stayin' High". Along with the bonus songs, the case came with a year free membership to the Buckcherry Fan Club, "Buckcherry's Bomb Squad". Buckcherry is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California formed in 1995. The band released two albums, Buckcherry (1999) and Time Bomb (2001), before partially dissolving in the summer of 2002. In 2005, lead vocalist Josh Todd and lead guitarist Keith Nelson reformed Buckcherry and released a new album on April 16, 2006, 15. It contained Buckcherry's biggest crossover hits to date, "Crazy Bitch", and their first Billboard Hot 100 top ten hit, "Sorry". Their fourth album, Black Butterfly, was released in September 2008, and their fifth album, All Night Long, was released on August 3, 2010. They are currently writing a sixth album, which is due for release in 2012 |
| THE ZOMBIES - SHE'S NOT THERE (1964) hit #2 I first learned this song on the compilation album Cruisin' 1964 in about 1983 at age 12.
She's Not There" is the debut
single by the
British
pop
band
The Zombies. It reached No.12 in the
UK Singles Chart in September 1964, and reached No.1 on
the
Cashbox chart (No.2 on the
Billboard Hot 100) in the United States at the
beginning of December 1964. In Canada, it reached number
two.
Rolling Stone magazine ranked "She's Not There" No.297 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Songwriter Rod Argent's second song was recorded and released in mid-1964. One of the song's most distinctive features is Argent's electric piano sound; the instrument used was a Hohner Pianet. The backing vocals are in a folk-influenced close-harmony style. This minor key, jazz-tinged single was first aired in the United States during the first week in August 1964, on New York rock radio station WINS by Stan Z. Burns, who debuted the song on his daily noontime "Hot Spot" segment, during which new songs were played. The tune began to catch on in early fall and eventually reached No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1964 |
| JEFFERSON - JOSE (1969) December 8th 1989 - my #1 favorite daily song for 5 days at age 18 while living at the monastery in Muenster,SK for 1st year University. I had picked up a 20 year old copy of this album still brand new sealed for only $2.00 at a record shop a block from the Midtown Plaza in Saskatoon the year before. July 3rd 2012 - my #4 favorite daily song at age 41 while living on Ave M South at the time our store Hoknes Collectibles burned down and in the process of creating my Top 1000 Songs list.
Geoff Turton (born Geoffrey Turton, 11 March

British
singer. His musical career began as the

The Rockin' Berries in 1961, who scored a number of
hits in the
UK and
Europe. The
group was best known for its
covers, and Turton did much of the searching and
decision work as to what was to be sung. When the group
broke up in 1968, Turton started a
solo career, releasing a
single, "Don't You Believe It", on
Piccadilly Records. It flopped, and Piccadilly head John
Schroeder suggested that Turton change his name to
Jefferson. The single "Montage" failed to
chart, but its follow-up, "Colour of My Love", was a hit
in the UK (peaking at #22 in the
UK Singles Chart), and
US (reaching #68 on the
Billboard Hot 100), and an
LP was issued following its success. A third single,
"Baby Take Me in Your Arms", was not a hit in the UK, but
cracked the
Top 40 in
America, peaking at #23 and justifying the release of a
stateside album. At the time of this single's success,
Turton was hurt in a car crash, and so he did not make any
live appearances. After a six month hospital stay, Turton
had a second
record which was never released by his
label and a career on hiatus in the UK.
