| THE GO GO'S - THIS TOWN (1981) Album: Beauty And The Beat (1981) I saw The Go Go's on TV on Solid Gold on January 16th 1982 the day after my 11th birthday and they became the very first current group that I liked. My mom bought me the album in early January 1982 and we went and saw them in concert that summer in Vancouver BC.. I still have the concert tickets 30 years later. I used to play with smurfs that year and they would pretend to have concerts while I listened to this album over and over. Beauty and the Beat is the debut album from Californian all-female band The Go-Go's. Released in 1981 on the IRS Records label, the album was preceded by the single "We Got the Beat," which became a massive club hit in Europe and, later, the United States. When the album was eventually released, it steadily climbed the Billboard 200 chart, ultimately peaking at number one, where it remained for six consecutive weeks. The L.P. sold in excess of three million copies and reached double platinum status, making it one of the most successful debut albums of all time. It is now widely considered as one of the cornerstone albums of 1980s new wave music. It was the first, and so far the only, album entirely written and performed by an all-female band to top the charts In 2003, the album was ranked number 413 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This album was chosen as one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Editor's Picks of 2005. The album opener, "Our Lips Are Sealed," has been covered over the years by numerous artists, and remains a staple of '80s playlists. It is frequently cited as one of the Top 100 and Top 50 songs of the '80s. Rolling Stone magazine has named it one of the Top 100 Pop Singles of all time. "We Got the Beat" has been named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. |
| RINGO STARR - SIMPLE LOVE SONG (1977) Album: Ringo The 4th (1977) I likely bought this album by 1983 at age 12 at Tramps record store used. July 7th 1989 - my #1 favorite daily song for 9 days at age 18 before entering 1st year University and celebrating Ringo's 49th birthday. July 7th 2010 - my #10 favorite daily song for 33 days at age 39 living at Ave M South married to Valerie for almost 3 years and celebrating Ringo's 70th birthday.
Ringo the 4th is the sixth album by
Ringo Starr, released in 1977. It is in fact, his sixth
studio album, but his fourth
rock album. Ringo the 4th has more dance-oriented
context, not typical for Ringo Starr.
After the commercial disappointment of Ringo's Rotogravure (1976), Starr decided to shift his formula of using his well-known musician friends (notably his fellow ex-Beatles) to write songs and appear on his albums. Instead, he intensified his partnership with Vini Poncia, with whom he wrote several of the songs featured here, while using the input of different musicians. The album was produced by Arif Mardin. The cover photos were by Starr's fiancee, Nancy Lee Andrews. David Foster played keyboards on a couple of songs, while Melissa Manchester and Bette Midler occasionally appeared on backing vocals.
Ringo the 4th was a dismal failure upon
its release, both commercially and critically.
Never touching the UK charts, the album limped
to a paltry #162 in the US, before expiring.
Shortly thereafter,
Atlantic Records dropped Starr from their
roster. In the UK, Polydor fulfilled its
three-album contractual requirement by following
up with a children's album,
Scouse the Mouse which featured Starr,
in the lead role, performing the lion's share of
the material.

| CHELY WRIGHT - SINGLE WHITE FEMALE (1999) Album: Single White Female (1999) June 21st 1999 - my #1 favorite daily song for 185 straight days. August 21st 1999 - my #1 favorite top 40 song for 4 straight weeks This is the longest running country song ever on my daily favorite songs chart in the past 30 years. We also used to perform this song live for a few years after this.
"Single White Female" is the title of a song written
by
Carolyn Dawn Johnson and Shaye Smith, and recorded by
American
country music artist
Chely Wright. The song is her highest-charting single on
the U.S. Billboard
Hot Country Songs charts. Additionally, fellow country
artist
Trisha Yearwood sings harmony vocals on the song.
The music video was directed by Deaton Flanigen and
premiered in March 1999. "Single White
Female" debuted at #66 on the U.S. Billboard Hot
Country Singles & Tracks for the week of March 13, 1999.

| PAUL McCARTNEY - ANOTHER DAY (1971) hit #5
"Another Day" is a song recorded by
Paul McCartney in New York in 1970, during the sessions
for his album
Ram. Although it was the first single of McCartney's
solo career, "Another Day" was actually written and
previewed during The Beatles' Let It Be Sessions in
1969. It was officially released on 19 February 1971, with "Oh
Woman, Oh Why" as the B-side. Neither song was included
on the original pressings of Ram.
Although "Another Day" and "Oh Woman, Oh Why" were not originally included on Ram, some CD re-releases of Ram have one or both songs as bonus tracks. "Another Day" has also appeared on several of McCartney's greatest hits albums, including All the Best!. It also appeared on the Wings greatest hits compilations Wings Greatest and Wingspan: Hits and History even though the song was not credited to Wings and predates the band's formation. The song was a hit in the United States and the United Kingdom, peaking at number five in the US and number two in the UK in March 1971. In Australia, the song spent one week at number one. In France, the song was also a number one hit |
| MIAMI SOUND MACHINE - FALLING IN LOVE (1987) hit #25 Falling in Love (Uh-Oh)" was the fourth single released by the American band Miami Sound Machine led by Gloria Estefan on their second English language album, and ninth studio album overall, Primitive Love. Gloria María Milagrosa Fajardo García de Estefan, known professionally as Gloria Estefan (born September 1, 1957) is a Cuban-born American singer, songwriter, actress and entrepreneur. Known as the "Queen Of Latin Pop", she is in the top 100 best selling music artists with over 100 million albums sold worldwide, 31.5 million of those in the United States alone. She has won three Grammy Awards, and 4 Latin Grammys, and is the most successful crossover performer in Latin music to date. Starting in 1977, the Miami Sound Machine, (the Miami Latin Boys with Gloria Estefan), began recording and releasing various albums, 45s, and 12"s on the Audiofon Records label in Miami. The first album from 1977 was entitled Live Again Renacer and was released with two different covers. After several more releases on the Audiofon label as well as the RCA Victor label and Miami Sound Machine's own label MSM Records, the band was signed to Discos CBS International and released several albums, 45s, and 12"s beginning with 1980s self-titled album Miami Sound Machine. Growing in popularity in both the United States and around the world, the group would continue recording and issuing various works for Discos CBS International through 1985. In 1984, Miami Sound Machine released their first Epic/Columbia album, Eyes of Innocence, which contained the dance hit "Dr. Beat" as well as the ballad "I Need Your Love". Their more successful follow-up album Primitive Love was released in 1985 launching three Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: "Conga" (U.S. #10), "Words Get In The Way" (U.S. #5), and "Bad Boy" (U.S. #8) became follow up hits in the U.S. and around the world. "Words Get in the Way" reached #1 on the US Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, establishing that the group could perform pop ballads as successfully as dance tunes. The song "Hot Summer Nights" was also released that year and was part of the film Top Gun. |
| MELLISA O'NEIL - ALIVE (2005) March 28th 2006 - my #6 favorite daily song for 46 days at age 35 living on Eastview dating Valerie now for 2 months and Tasha was 8 months pregnant.
Alive" is a
pop song performed by
Canadian Idol season three winner
Melissa O'Neil. It was written for the final two
contestants—O'Neil and
Rex Goudie—of the third season of Canadian Idol,
and both performed a different version of the song. When
O'Neil won the competition,
Sony BMG released "Alive" as her debut
single in October 2005. The single was produced by
Rob Wells, who also shares the writing credits with J.
Cates and L. Robbins. The single was recorded, engineered
and mixed by Chris Anderson for Definitive Sound in
Mississauga, Ontario. Executive Produced by Jennifer Hyland
In "Alive", the narrator promises to live her life more fully. "Even if I crash down and burn out", she proclaims in the refrain, "at least I'm gonna know what it's like / to feel alive". The song debuted at number one on the Canadian Singles Chart. It remained at the top for seven weeks and was eventually certified platinum for sales of more than 40,000 copies. "Alive" reached the BDS Airplay Chart top five. No music video was filmed for "Alive"; its success was solely off O'Neil's win on Canadian Idol. On the season 4 finale of Canadian Idol, Melissa was presented with a 4 times multi-platinum record for "Alive" by Craig Sharpe the runner-up of that season. |
| ANDERSON, BRUFORD, WAKEMAN & HOWE - BROTHER OF MINE (1989) Album: Anderson Bruford Wakeman & Howe (1989) August 15th 1991 - my #3 favorite daily song for 2 days at age 20 before entering 3rd year University.
Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe is the
self-titled album by four alumni of the
progressive rock group
Yes:
Jon Anderson,
Bill Bruford,
Rick Wakeman, and
Steve Howe.
The project began in 1988. At that time vocalist Jon Anderson had felt artistically constrained within Yes's current format, where the songwriting of Trevor Rabin had taken the band in a commercially very successful but musically and lyrically different direction. Anderson regrouped with Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman and Bill Bruford of Yes’ "classic" line-up. Bruford, who had at various times been a member of King Crimson, recruited Crimson bandmate Tony Levin as the group's bassist. The group was unable to use the name Yes for legal reasons. However, the group did have Arista assign the catalog number of 90126 to the original releases of the CD and cassette. This was their subtle way of stamping this as the next Yes album after 90125. The group rehearsed and composed their material in Paris and then flew directly to the island of Montserrat to record. Many of the tracks on the album (specifically "Teakbois") carry Latin and Caribbean influences. "Let's Pretend" was co-composed by Vangelis in 1986, and was a previously unreleased piece by the group Jon & Vangelis. |
| SHANIA TWAIN - DON'T BE STUPID (1998) hit #40
"Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)" is a song by
Canadian singer
Shania Twain. It was the second country single from
Shania Twain's 1997 album,
Come on Over, but was the seventh to be released to
international markets. The song was written by
Mutt Lange and Shania Twain. Originally released in
1997, the single peaked at number six becoming Twain's sixth
Top 10 hit on the
Billboard country singles chart. The song was
later released as her last single to European and Australian
markets in 2000. "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)",
which reached #5 in the UK in 2000, was included on the 2004
Greatest Hits package.
In June 1997, Twain held auditions for clogg dancers. In August 1997, it was reported that Larry Jordan would be directing the music video, which Twain confirmed herself in early October 1997. From October 18 to 19, 1997 the music video was shot and it debuted on November 12, 1997. The video is set on a stage that is covered in water and Twain is accompanied by backup Irish dancers following the Riverdance craze of the time and children playing fiddles. By the end of the video the sprinklers come on and everyone including Twain gets soaked. "Don't Be Stupid" won the Video of the Year award at the 1998 Canadian Country Music Awards. "Don't Be Stupid" debuted on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart the week of November 15, 1997 at number 51, the highest debut of the week. The single spent 20 weeks on the chart and climbed to a peak position of number six on January 31, 1998, where it remained for two weeks. It reached number two on the Country Singles Sales chart. The single became Twain's sixth top ten single and her eighth top 20 hit. "Don't Be Stupid" became Twain's fifth appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 where it peaked at number 40. It reached number 25 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart. In Canada the song hit number 12. "Don't Be Stupid" became Twain's fourth biggest single in the UK. It also became her fourth consecutive, fifth overall, top ten single and it hit #5. It debuted on February 26, 2000, at its peak of number five. It remained on the chart for 11 weeks |
| THE CHIFFONS - SWEET TALKING GUY (1966)
The Chiffons were one of the top girl groups of the early
1960s. With their trademark tight harmonies, high-stepping
confidence and the hit machine of
Goffin and
King writing songs such as “One Fine Day,” the Chiffons
made music that helped define the girl group sound of the
era.
The group was originally a trio comprising lead singer Judy Craig, Patricia Bennett and Barbara Lee. They formed at James Monroe High School in The Bronx in 1960. In 1962, at the suggestion of songwriter Ronald Mack, the group added Sylvia Peterson, who at age 14 had sung with Little Jimmy & the Tops, sharing lead vocals with Jimmy on "Say You Love Me," the B-side of the Tops' 1959 local hit "Puppy Love." The group then began recording as the Four Pennies, with Peterson singing lead on "When the Boy's Happy." Over the course of 1963, the group gradually adopted the Chiffons name. The group used the Chiffons name when recording and releasing their first single, "He's So Fine," written by Ronald Mack, produced by the Tokens of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" fame, and released on the Laurie Records label. "He's So Fine" hit No. 1 in the United States, selling over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc; (This sales figure would have qualified the record for platinum status under the current [as of 2011] RIAA certification standards, effective since 1975, that lowered the "gold" certification threshold to 500,000 copies and set the "platinum" threshold at 1 million.) The group also released two singles in 1963 as the Four Pennies on the Laurie Records subsidiary Rust, but they abandoned the Four Pennies name as the success of "He's So Fine" became clear. This first hit was followed by other notable tunes such as Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "One Fine Day", "Sweet Talkin' Guy" and "I Have A Boyfriend". As the 1960s progressed, Peterson assumed a more prominent role in the group, singing lead on the Chiffons' "Why Am I So Shy," "Strange, Strange Feeling," "The Real Thing," and "My Block" (written by Jimmy Radcliffe, Carl Spencer and Bert Berns). |
| DESTINY'S CHILD - SAY MY NAME (2000) Album: The Writings On The Wall (1999) March 11th 2000 - my #1 favorite song in the top 40 for 15 weeks - my #2 favorite top 40 hit of 2000 March 29th 2000 - my #1 favorite daily song for 93 days straight. #2 favorite daily song of 2000. This was the first song I really liked by them as I was really paying attention to music for the first time in about 8 years in a new digital age I was back to collecting music full time by downloading all the latest hits in mp3 format for the first time. This song featured Beyonce who was not yet a recognized name. The chorus is so catchy and it had me hooked so I would play the song over and over again.
"Say My Name" is a song by American
R&B group
Destiny's Child. The song was the third single from the
group's 1999 album
The Writing's on the Wall, released through
Columbia label in 2000. The single is the most
successful of the four releases from the album and is
considered to be one of their signature songs. The song won
awards for "Best
R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals" and "Best
R&B Song" and two was nominated for "Record
of the Year" and "Song
of the Year" at the
2001 Grammy Awards and an
MTV Video Music Award. It is the first single to
introduce the second lineup featuring newly added members
Michelle Williams and
Farrah Franklin. However, their vocals are not present
on the single. In October 2011,
NME
placed it at number 58 on its list "150 Best Tracks of the
Past 15 Years
|
| ASHLEE SIMPSON - PIECES OF ME (2004) Album: Autobiography (2004) November 25th 2004 - my #1 favorite daily song for 46 days through Christmas 2004. My #7 favorite daily song of 2004. Amazing catchy girl power/pop song. This song was a huge hit on the radio but I never got to hear it till late in its run as every mp3 I tried to download in late 2004 was a screwed up file. So I never heard the song and didn't watch TV so I had never seen her reality TV series either until later on. Pieces of Me" is a song by American pop/rock singer Ashlee Simpson and the first single from her début album, Autobiography. The song, which was co-written by Simpson, Kara DioGuardi and John Shanks (and produced by Shanks), is a blend of pop and rock with lyrics about finding comfort and happiness in a relationship with a new boyfriend. "Pieces of Me" was released as the first single from Autobiography in mid-2004, prior to the album's release in July; it peaked at number five in the United States, and contributed to the considerable success of Autobiography, which went triple platinum in the U.S. Outside of the U.S., the song enjoyed some chart success as well, reaching the top ten in a number of countries. As of 2011, it remains Simpson's most successful song, and her only song to reach the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. The song became her best charting single and it is Simpson's biggest hit to date |
| KYU SAKAMOTO - SUKIYAKI (1963) hit #1 The only foreign language #1 hit in the USA during the 1960s
"Ue o Muite Arukō"
(上を向いて歩こう,
literally "[I] will walk looking up") is a
Japanese-language song that was performed by Japanese
crooner
Kyu Sakamoto, and written by lyricist
Rokusuke Ei and composer
Hachidai Nakamura. It is best known under the
alternative title "Sukiyaki" in
Anglophone countries. The song reached the top of the
Billboard Hot 100 charts in the United States in
1963, and remains the only Japanese-language song ever to
have done so. In addition, it was and still is one of the
few non-English songs, other than French and Spanish, to
have reached the top of the US charts. It is one of the
best-selling singles of all time, having sold over 13
million copies worldwide. The original Kyu Sakamoto
recording also went to number eighteen on the R&B chart. In
addition, the single spent five weeks at number one on the
Middle of the Road charts. The recording was originally
released in Japan by
Toshiba in 1961. It topped the Popular Music Selling
Record chart in the Japanese magazine Music Life for
three months, and was ranked as the number one song of 1961
in Japan.
Well-known English-language cover versions with altogether different lyrics include "My First Lonely Night" by Jewel Akens in 1966 and "Sukiyaki" by both A Taste of Honey in 1980 and by 4 P.M. in 1994. There are many other language versions of the song as well. Kyu Sakamoto (坂本 九 Sakamoto Kyū, born Hisashi Oshima (大島 九 Ōshima Hisashi), 10 November 1941 – 12 August 1985) was a Japanese singer and actor, best known outside of Japan for his international hit song "Sukiyaki", which was sung in Japanese and sold over 13 million copies. It reached number one in the United States Billboard Hot 100 in June 1963 |
| STEVIE WONDER - JOY INSIDE MY TEARS (1976) Album: Songs In The Key Of Life (1976) September 27th 2008 - my #1 favorite daily song for 37 days at age 37 living at Ave M South with Valerie now married 1 year and Nicholas was almost 2.5.
Songs in the Key of Life is the 18th album by
American recording artist
Stevie Wonder, released September 28, 1976, on
Motown Records. It was the culmination of his "classic
period" albums. An ambitious
double LP with a 4-song bonus
EP, Songs in the Key of Life became among the
best-selling and most critically acclaimed albums of his
career. In 2003, the album was ranked number 56 on
Rolling Stone magazine's list of
the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Highly anticipated, the album surpassed all commercial expectations. Surprisingly, it debuted straight at number one on the Billboard Pop Albums Chart on October 8, 1976, becoming only the third album in history to achieve that feat and the first by an American artist (after British singer/composer Elton John's Captain Fantastic and Rock of the Westies in 1975). In Canada, the album achieved the same feat, entering at number 1 on the RPM national albums chart on October 16. Songs in the Key of Life spent thirteen consecutive weeks at number one in the U.S., eleven during 1976. It was the album with the most weeks at number one during the year. In those eleven weeks, Songs in the Key of Life managed to block four other albums from reaching the top – in order, Boz Scaggs's Silk Degrees, Earth, Wind & Fire's Spirit, Led Zeppelin's soundtrack for The Song Remains the Same and Rod Stewart's A Night on the Town. On January 15, 1977, the album finally dropped to number two behind Eagles' Hotel California and the following week it fell to number four. On January 29 it returned to the top for a fourteenth and final week. The album then began its final fall. It spent a total of 35 weeks inside the Top Ten and 80 weeks on the Billboard albums chart. Songs In the Key of Life also saw longevity at number one on the Billboard R&B/Black Albums chart, spending twenty non-consecutive weeks there |
| QUARTERFLASH - HARDEN MY HEART (1982)
Harden My Heart" is the most popular single by the
rock group
Quarterflash, off their
Quarterflash album, released in 1981.
The song was originally released as a single in early 1980 by Seafood Mama, Quarterflash's predecessor band. It featured more sparse instrumentation but a more dramatic vocal arrangement than the hit version and was a regional success on radio stations in Portland, Oregon. The record's video features theatrics in and around an office trailer with dark corridors and swinging light bulbs from the ceiling before it was bulldozed and torched. After changing their name, Quarterflash released their self-titled debut album in 1981 which contained the new version of "Harden My Heart". This version was released as the album's first single. In January 1982, it reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #1 on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The song also reached the Top 20 in Germany and in France, though it stalled below the Top 40 in the United Kingdom. It was the group's only Top 10 single on the Hot 100, although their follow-up single from the album, "Find Another Fool", and their 1983 hit "Take Me to Heart" both entered the Top 20. This song is included in the game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, in the radio station Emotion 98.3 and was played twice in the pilot episode of Knight Rider. Julianne Hough and Mary J. Blige sing this song in the film Rock of Ages Quarterflash was an American rock group formed in 1980 in Portland, Oregon. The band was made up of Rindy Ross (lead vocals and saxophone), her husband Marv Ross (guitars), Jack Charles (guitars), Rick DiGiallonardo (keyboards/synthesizers), Rich Gooch (electric bass), and Brian David Willis (drums and percussion). Having a lead singer who also played the saxophone is one thing which made Quarterflash notable. In a 1982 interview, Rindy Ross said that she viewed the saxophone as an extension of her voice, enabling her to express things she could not express with her voice alone. |
| MARY J. BLIGE - REAL LOVE (1992) Album: What's The 411 (1992) Not only did I always listen to old classic records but I always stayed totally caught up on all the latest Top 40 hits and I always liked a catchy song by great female voice. This song had the catchy hook chorus but the groove was so infectious. November 26 1992 it became my #1 favorite song. At the time it broke records as it was the longest any song had ever stayed as my #1 favorite song which at that time was 32 days in a row. It was also my favorite song in the top 40 for an amazing 12 weeks in a row which was unheard of for me personally at that time. No song had been my favorite for that long in almost a decade. All these records of hers would be beaten by herself in 2006 when Be Without You spent lengthier runs at #1 on my daily chart and on Top 40 song chart.
"Real Love" is a
1992 hit single by
hip hop soul singer
Mary J. Blige. It was the second single from Blige's
debut album,
What's the 411?. Written and produced by Mark C.
Rooney and
Mark Morales (of
The Fat Boys fame) and built off a drum sample from
hip hop duo
Audio Two's
1988 track "Top
Billin'" and
MC Lyte's song "10% Diss". It was one of the songs which
gave Blige's reputation as "the queen of
hip-hop soul."
"Real Love" was her first top-ten pop hit, peaking at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100, and her second number one hit on Billboard's R&B singles chart. The remix featured the second appearance of rapper The Notorious B.I.G., who was then going by the name Biggie Smalls, and a sample of Betty Wright's 1972 single, "Clean Up Woman." The song eventually helped What's the 411? sell more than three million copies in America alone |
