ABBA - WHEN I KISSED THE TEACHER (1976)

Album:  Arrival (1976)

Arrival is the fourth studio album by the Swedish pop group ABBA. It was originally released in Sweden on 11 October 1976 by Polar Records. Recording sessions began in August 1975 and continued until September 1976. The album was recorded at Metronome and Glen studios in Stockholm, Sweden. Arrival was first released on CD in 1984.   Upon its original 1976 release, "Fernando", released as a single earlier the same year, did not appear on Arrival, but it was included on the South African, Australian and New Zealand versions. "Fernando" remained unreleased on Arrival until the first remastered issue in 1997. The album also contains three of the group's biggest hits, "Dancing Queen", "Money, Money, Money" and "Knowing Me, Knowing You". The helicopter used for the album art is a Bell 47. Arrival was the best-selling album of 1977 in the United Kingdom. In April 1977, the album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

ABBA was a Swedish pop/rock/disco group formed in Stockholm in 1972, comprising Agnetha Fältskog, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. ABBA is an acronym of the first letters of the band members' first names and is sometimes stylized as the registered trademark ᗅᗺᗷᗅ. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of pop music, topping the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1982. They are also known for winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, giving Sweden its first victory in the history of the contest and being the most successful group ever to take part in the contest

GEORGE HARRISON - AWAITING ON YOU ALL (1970)

I first bought this album around 1982 at age 11.  This album was #1 the day I was born on 1/15/71.

Awaiting on You All" is a song by George Harrison that first appeared on his 1970 triple album All Things Must Pass. A live version was also released on the 1971 album The Concert for Bangladesh. The music of the song incorporates gospel music elements as well as Phil Spector's wall of sound techniques. The lyrics proclaim the need for spirituality while rejecting organised religion. The Pope is explicitly criticised, and the antics of Harrison's former bandmate John Lennon are also criticised.

"Awaiting on You All" mixes gospel music and rock and roll elements. The music resembles co-producer Phil Spector's wall of sound technique that he used with groups such as The Ronettes, accomplished by layering multiple slide guitars played by Harrison. Although Spector is famous for the wall of sound technique, bassist Klaus Voormann recalls that Harrison added the multiple guitar parts after Spector had left the sessions. Voorman has claimed that "I wish he'd had a little less slide. I like his solos, but I think there's too much on the record

Rolling Stone Magazine critic Ben Gerson described "Awaiting on You All" as "a Lesley Gore rave-up in which George manages to rhyme 'visas' with 'Jesus.'" Rolling Stone's Anthony DeCurtis notes that this song, as well as two other songs from All Things Must Pass, "My Sweet Lord" and the title track, "capture the sweet satisfactions of faith." Allmusic critic Richie Unterberger describes "Awaiting on You All" as "excellent" and as one of the highlights of All Things Must Pass. Allmusic's Lindsay Planer states that in the song Harrison "cleverly draws upon an array of disparate imagery to convey a conversely simple spiritual revelation." Planer states that the live version on Concert for Bangladesh is "particularly notable for the tag-team percussion of drummers Ringo Starr and Jim Keltner driving through the heart of the performance

BANANARAMA - LONG TRAIN RUNNING (1991)

Album:  Pop Life (1991)

Flamenco spanish flavored dance version of the classic rock song by The Doobie Brothers.  I just loved it then and still do - its pleasant to listen to.  Love the relaxed harmonies.

October 2nd 1991 - my #1 favorite daily song for 11 days at age 20 in 3rd year University.

Bananarama's version appeared on their fifth studio album Pop Life and was released as the album's third single in the UK. The group discovered the song when they were browsing through the record collection of Youth, producer of the Pop Life album. They needed one more song recorded to complete Pop Life and decided to go with a cover version.

The Gypsy Kings provided flamenco guitar on Bananarama's version, using the pseudonym "Alma de Noche" ("Soul of the Night"). UK singer Zoë provided backing vocals.

BELINDA CARLISLE - LEAVE A LIGHT ON (1989)

Album:  Runaway Horses (1989)

November 29th 1989 - my #1 favorite top 40 hit for 3 straight weeks.   The only solo Belinda Carlisle to hit #1 on either of my charts.   This song features a great guitar solo by George Harrison however I never knew that until it became my favorite song again 14 years later.  This song features those amazing piled up vocal harmonies that became her signature sound.

December 15th 2003 - my #1 favorite daily song for 26 days through Christmas 2003.  This was my first Xmas living on my own in my first home.

"Leave a Light On" is a pop song written by Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley, produced by Nowels for Belinda Carlisle's third solo album Runaway Horses (1989). It was released as the album's first single in the end of 1989 as a CD single, 7" single and a 12" single.

The song reached within the top ten position in Australia, Austria, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, Netherland and the UK making it one of her biggest hits to date. In the U.S. it peaked at number 11. "Leave a Light On'" features former Beatle George Harrison on the slide guitar.

SHeDAISY - PASSENGER SEAT (2004)

Album:  Sweet Right Here (2004)

May 1st 2004 - my #1 favorite country hit for 8 weeks straight making it my #2 country song of 2004.

May 9th 2004 - my #1 favorite daily song for 11 days making it my #8 favorite daily song of 2004.

Great powerful catchy country song - one of the best ever - great guitar/fiddle riff.

Passenger Seat" is the title of a song recorded by American country group SHeDAISY. It served as the lead-off single for the group's third studio album Sweet Right Here. The song was written by SHeDAISY member Kristyn Osborn, with Connie Harrington.

"Passenger Seat" debuted at number 44 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks for the week of February 7, 2004. The song spent 20 weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, reaching a peak of number 12 in June 2004

    YES - WONDEROUS STORIES (1977)

Album: Going For The Oner (1977)

December 11th 1991 - my #8 favorite daily song for 7 days at age 20 while in 3rd year University.  I bought the Yes CD box set that came out for $80.00 at the religious book store downtown 21st Street.

May 12th 2008 - my #10 favorite daily song for 30 days at age 37 living at Eastview married to Valerie for 8 months.  Nicholas was now 2 years old.

After dedicating all of 1980-1983 to The Beatles I discovered Yes in 1984 and that year at age 13 bought every single one of their albums due to their new fame with Owner Of A Lonely Heart but it was their 2nd new single Leave It that had my intrigued.  So I learned their first 15 years of material all in 1984 just as I was entering high school.  Yes would quickly become my 2nd favorite band of all time.   I saw Bill Bruford live in concert in 1992 and chatted with him for a moment.  My wife bought tickets to see Yes in 2008 in Toronto but the concert was cancelled due to Jon Anderson's vocal problems.  We flew to New York in 2011 to see Jon Anderson solo in concert.  Members of Yes are my favorite musicians ever including Rick Wakeman, Trevor Rabin, Steve Howe and Chris Squire.   My high school best friend Nels Krauss and I also bonded through our connection of Yes and playing music and we enjoyed jamming on Yes songs in the mid 1980's.

Going for the One is the eighth studio album from the English progressive rock band Yes, released in 1977 on Atlantic Records. It was produced after an extended break for solo activity from the group, and marks the return of keyboardist Rick Wakeman, who had departed in 1974 after the Tales from Topographic Oceans tour. His return was facilitated by the departure of Patrick Moraz, after having only played on Relayer, although Moraz is thanked in the credits.  Allmusic's Ross Boissoneau has described this album as "perhaps the most overlooked item in the Yes catalog". Jon Anderson has said of the song "Awaken", "We had a hit record! I loved listening to 'Awaken', at last we had created a Masterwork" and has indicated in some interviews that he considers it to be Yes's most complete composition

    A-HA - HUNTING HIGH AND LOW (1985)

Album:  Hunting High And Low (1985)

My sister Leslie received this tape as a gift and I borrowed it and it became one of my favorite albums of all time.   A pop mentality with such dark musical flavoring through this dramatic song and entire album.

February 11th 1989 - my #2 favorite song for 4 days at age 18 while taking extra classes at Nutana College the year after graduating.

January 26th 2010 - my #4 favorite daily song for 19 days at age 39

Hunting High and Low" is a song by Norwegian new wave band a-ha. It was released as the fourth international and final single from the band's debut album, Hunting High and Low

Hunting High and Low" was released in the summer of 1986 and became the third most successful single from Hunting High and Low on the rock charts and one of the band's most recognizable and popular songs. The song didn't chart on the Billboard Hot 100, but charted in Britain where its peak was #5 and in Ireland where it peaked at #4.     The album version was produced by Tony Mansfield and is played with synthesizers, the single remix produced by Alan Tarney features an orchestra.   Coldplay has been known to perform this song in concert, with a special nod to the band of their initial inspiration.    "Hunting High and Low" is one of a-ha's most famous songs and is part of their live set. The song appears on the live album How Can I Sleep with Your Voice in My Head.    World Sales: 1,500,000 copies

    ASHLEE SIMPSON - I AM ME (2005)

Album:  I Am Me (2005)

While I was on my girl power/pop kick I was liking Ashlee Simpsons 2nd album in a row.

June 7th 2006 - my #1 favorite daily song for 36 days.  It was this week that I first tried watching the 1966 gothic horror soap opera series Dark Shadows which I would be so addicted to that I would watch it for many many hours every single day for the next 14 months !   I was now dating Valerie for 4 months and my son Nicholas was now 7 weeks old.

I Am Me is the second studio album by singer Ashlee Simpson. The first single from the album was "Boyfriend", and the second single was "L.O.V.E." I Am Me was released in the United States on October 18, 2005 (see 2005 in music) and debuted at number one in sales. The album produced two top 25 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Simpson worked with John Shanks and Kara DioGuardi on this album, as she did on her first album, 2004's Autobiography. Shanks produced the album, and Simpson co-wrote all the songs with Shanks and DioGuardi On December 15, I Am Me was certified Platinum by the RIAA for its shipments of over one million copies in the U.S. (as of April 2008, it had sold 987,000 copies). A new single from Simpson, "Invisible", was reportedly going to be included on a re-release of I Am Me in mid-2006, but was canceled. The song was later included as in international bonus track on Simpson's next album, Bittersweet World

FLEETWOOD MAC - THE CHAIN (1977)

Classic song that is one of my very favorites to perform live however its never made my daily charts. First heard it while listening to them alot in August 1987 at age 16.

The Chain" is a song from Fleetwood Mac's best-selling album Rumours. "The Chain" is the only song credited to all five members of the Rumours-era lineup: Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, John McVie, Stevie Nicks.

According to interviews on the writing of Rumours, the final section of "The Chain"—beginning with a bass progression—was created by John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. It seemed like a beginning, not an ending. Stevie Nicks had written the lyrics separately and thought they would be a good match; she and Christine McVie did some reworking to create the first section of the tune. To complete the song, Lindsey Buckingham recycled the intro from an earlier song from his duo with Nicks, "Lola (My Love)", originally released on their self-titled 1973 album. Thanks to its use as a popular TV theme tune (for the BBC's Formula One coverage), the ending bass line is highly recognisable, and although not released as a single, it does get air play.

The song itself has a basic rock structure, although it has two distinct portions: the main verse and chorus, and the outro. The song shows influences of hard rock, folk, and country. The song also uses a banjo to play the famous riff

    TERRY HOKNES - HARMONY (1992) Opus #795

In 1992 age 21 I went and packaged up very first official release album on cassette called COOL ALL OVER.  It featured all my original songs and a weird bunch of genres.  It was reviewed in an issue of the SOMA newspaper in 1992 by Brent Pomeroy.  He liked the musicianship but thought the vocals need work.  The album was recorded primitively on a new 4 track cassette tape recorder I had bought and recorded this album while renting at 314 Cumberland Ave

I wrote my first song in 1982 at age 11 in Grade 6.     I would sporadically write 18 few songs over the next 4 years.  Starting with my 19th song (Opus #19) I began writing on a very regular basis starting in December 1986 in Grade 11 at Aden Bowman.  This included writing over 58 songs with my best friend Nels Krauss over the period of 1986-1992.  I wrote 97 songs in 1987 and then 215 songs in 1988.   By the time I graduated high school at age 17 I was up to Opus #268.   I wrote another 178 songs in 1989.   By the time I celebrated my 19th birthday I was up to Opus #524.   At that time I was in first year University living in Muenster, SK in residence at St Peters College at the monastery.  I met a poet from New York named Philip Murray who I collaborated with writing music to his words 91 songs in total.  I wrote my 1000th song the week I turned 25 in January 1996.

ELTON JOHN - TAKE ME TO THE PILOT (1970)

Album:  Elton John (1970)

During my record collecting days of the 1980's I had every single Elton John album and my elementary school teacher Dave Glaze always looked like Elton John on the cover of this album.   This was such a powerful catchy song.

"Take Me to the Pilot" is a rock song performed by British musician Elton John. The song was written by Bernie Taupin and composed by John for his eponymous second album in 1970.

It was released in 1970 as the second single from the album, backed by "Your Song." Both received airplay, but "Your Song" was preferred by disc jockeys and replaced "Take Me to the Pilot" as the A-side, eventually making both the UK and U.S. Top Tens.

    BLONDIE - 11:59 (1978)

Album:  Parallel Lines (1978)

This was the B side of a 45 and I really liked this commercial punk epic.

November 12th 1989 - my #1 favorite daily song for 7 days at age 18 in 1st year University.

Parallel Lines is the third studio album by American New Wave band Blondie, released in 1978 by Chrysalis Records. Their most popular and best-selling effort, Parallel Lines was the first Blondie album to be produced by Mike Chapman. The album reached number one in the United Kingdom in February 1979 and number six in the United States in April 1979. It contains several of the best-known Blondie hits, including "Heart of Glass", "Hanging on the Telephone", "Sunday Girl" and "One Way or Another". Six of the twelve tracks were issued as singles, either in the US or the UK. Named after an unfinished Blondie song, Parallel Lines was ranked at number 140 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, number eighteen on NME's 100 Best Albums of All Time, and number seven on Blender's 100 Greatest American Albums of All Time. Parallel Lines has sold over twenty million copies worldwide

ASHLEE SIMPSON - CATCH ME WHEN I FALL (2005)

Album:  I Am Me (2005)

Great dramatic piano driven ballad.

June 7th 2006 - my #2 favorite daily song for 36 days at age 35 while dating Valerie for 4 months and my son Nicholas was 6 weeks old living on Eastview.

I Am Me is the second studio album by singer Ashlee Simpson. The first single from the album was "Boyfriend", and the second single was "L.O.V.E."     ASIA - TIME AGAIN (1982)

Album:  Asia (1982)

Grand epic featuring Steve Howe of Yes on guitar from their debut album which I first picked up around 1985 on vinyl.

May 30th 2010 - my #2 favorite daily song for 28 days at age 39 on an Asia revival kick.

Asia is the debut album by the English rock supergroup Asia, released in 1982.

The album reached #1 in the US on the Billboard album charts, and according to Billboard was the best-selling album in the United States for the year 1982. Asia was certified 4x Platinum by the RIAA on February 10, 1995.

The album contains the band's biggest hit and signature song, "Heat of the Moment", which reached #4 in the US on the Billboard Hot 100 chart

TROOPER - WAITING FOR YOUR LOVE (1978)

Album:  Thick As Thieves (1978)

September 26th 1989 - my #1 favorite daily song for 3 days at age 18 living in Muenster, SK for 1st year University at St Peters College living in residence at the monastery.

In the fall of 2001 record engineer Neil Meckelborg wanted to license and record Canadian songs for karaoke CD's that were unavailable.  We worked on a Trooper karaoke tribute CD featuring most of the songs from their greatest hit Hot Shots album.   The project started with me performing all the keyboards, bass, drum, horns, strings parts all sequenced.  He hired John Lisi to add guitar tracks and Neil mixed and packaged and did the licensing.  Finally these great songs by Trooper were available across Canada in karaoke format.

Thick as Thieves is the fourth album by Canadian rock band Trooper, released in 1978. The album was produced by Randy Bachman of Bachman–Turner Overdrive and The Guess Who fame. The album went platinum in their home country, and featured the group's only successful U.S. single, "Raise a Little Hell". This album also contained the hit "Round, Round We Go" written and sung by Frank Ludwig, and "The Moment That it Takes" written by Stewart and Underhill and sung by Ludwig.

Trooper is a Juno Award winning Canadian rock band that developed from a group formed by vocalist Ramon McGuire and guitarist Brian Smith in 1975. The group is best known for its Canadian hits: "Raise a Little Hell", "We're Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time)", "The Boys in the Bright White Sports Car", "General Hand Grenade

    DESTINY'S CHILD - GIRL (2005) hit #23

Girl" is an R&B song performed by R&B girl group Destiny's Child. It was written by Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, Rodney Jerkins, Ric Rude, Angela Beyince, Sean Garrett, and Patrick Douthit for Destiny's Child fourth studio album Destiny Fulfilled (2004). Produced by Knowles, and 9th Wonder, the song contains elements and samples from the song "Ocean of Thoughts and Dreams" as written by Don Davis and Eddie Robinson], and performed by The Dramatics. Released as the album's third single, the single peaked at number 23 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, making it Destiny's Child's lowest charting single since 1999's "Bug a Boo

The song was chosen to be a single over "Cater 2 U" in a vote at Destiny's Child's official site. However, the song underperformed in comparison with earlier singles, peaking at number 23 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and number 10 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The single suffered from low downloads, which kept it from reaching the top 20. After "Girl" underperformed, Destiny's Child released "Cater 2 U" as the fourth single from the album.

Despite "Girl" peaking at a disappointing position in the U.S., the single picked up strong airplay and videoplay in the UK. It became a top 10 entry for the band, gaining a number six peak. "Girl" was the group's final single on the European music market, as subsequent singles, "Cater 2 U" and "Stand Up for Love" were both cancelled due to their underperformance in the American charts. In Australia, "Girl" became a top 5 hit in both the Urban and ARIA official charts

THE DELLS - I WANT MY MOMMA (1969)

Album:  Musical Menu (1969)

May 10th 1989 - my #3 favorite daily song for 1 day at age 18 while taking extra high school classes the year after graduating.

The Dells are an American R&B and crossover musical group. Their successful recordings spanned more than four decades. Formed in 1952 after attending high school together, the Dells' repertoire has included doo-wop, jazz, soul, disco and contemporary rhythm and blues. Unlike many of their contemporaries, the group's lineup did not change much from 1960 and consisted, until 2009, of falsetto leader Johnny Carter (died August 21, 2009), baritone lead singer Marvin Junior and background singers Mickey McGill, Verne Allison and Chuck Barksdale. The Dells are 2004 inductees into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, and were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame the same year. One of the longest-running groups in music history, the Dells recorded and performed for almost 50 years without a single change in personnel

CHERYL LYNN - GOT TO BE REAL (1978)

Album:  Cheryl Lynn (1978)

Father MC sampled the song for his song "I'll Do 4 U" on his 1990 album Father's Day, which features vocals by Mary J. Blige.       The bass guitar groove of this song is so contagious that even the Father MC version is one of my favorites.    I first heard this song on a compilation various artists disco record around 1990.  Amazing powerful vocals.

"Got to Be Real" is a 1978 disco song by Cheryl Lynn from her self-titled album. The song, which was Lynn's debut single, was penned by David Paich, David Foster, and Lynn, and has since been called one of the defining moments in disco. Along with the tracks, "Star Love" and "You Saved My Day", "Got to Be Real" peaked at number eleven on the disco chart. For the recording, David Paich played keyboards, James Gadson played drums and Ray Parker Jr. was the session guitarist. The song peaked at number twelve on the pop singles chart and number one on the R&B chart in early-1979. On September 19, 2005, "Got to Be Real" was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame

    LARI WHITE - NOW I KNOW (1994)

April 17th 1995 - my #1 favorite daily song for 43 days and was 1 of 6 country songs to hit #1 on my daily chart during the 1990's country boom.

The beautiful Lari White sang a strong deep vocal and the chorus is very emotional.

"Now I Know" is a single by American country music artist Lari White. Released in 1994, it was the second single from the album Wishes. The song reached #5 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart

Lari Michele White (born May 13, 1965 in Dunedin, Florida) is an American country music artist and actress. She first gained national attention in 1992 as a winner on You Can Be a Star, a talent competition which aired on The Nashville Network. A recording contract with RCA Records Nashville followed a year later, producing three studio albums, a greatest hits package, and several chart singles. A fourth studio album was released in 1998 on Lyric Street Records, followed by two more releases on White's own label, Skinny White Girl. Overall, White has charted twelve times on the Billboard country music charts, with three of her singles having reached Top Ten: "That's My Baby" and "That's How You Know (When You're In Love)" at #10, and "Now I Know" at #5.

    XYLON COZENS - IONA (1995)

Album:  Xylon I (1995)

Xylon Cozens was a childhood friend of mine who was highly influenced by 60's recording with great vocal harmonies such as The Beach Boys.  He had been a member of the accapella vocal group Streetnix.   He began songwriting and came up with some amazing truly original songs and sounds. Recording this album in Saskatoon, SK, Canada in 1995.  This was my favorite song on the CD which featured his father Nigel Cozens playing guitar tracks.    Some intricate layered vocal harmonies at the end which I really liked with some unpleasant sounding chords at times.   I was there for his CD release party.   He had originally recorded some demo's for this album on my 8-track cassette Tascam recorder which I used to rent to him.  I had done a slide guitar track for him but don't know what song it was.  Xylon had formerly been a vocal singer in the accapella group Streetnix from September 1991 to December 1992 at the time I was in 3rd year University.

February 13th 1996 - my #1 favorite daily song for 193 days straight.   It was my #1 favorite song of 1996.   This was the 3rd longest run at #1 any song has ever had on my daily chart due to my own musical pursuits traveling and touring at the time performing country music across western Canada.
