TERRY HOKNES - JERUSALEM (1990) Demo Opus 646 traditional lyrics

I wrote my first song in 1982 at age 11 in Grade 6.     I would sporadically write 18 few songs over the next 4 years.  Starting with my 19th song (Opus #19) I began writing on a very regular basis starting in December 1986 in Grade 11 at Aden Bowman.  This included writing over 58 songs with my best friend Nels Krauss over the period of 1986-1992.  I wrote 97 songs in 1987 and then 215 songs in 1988.   By the time I graduated high school at age 17 I was up to Opus #268.   I wrote another 178 songs in 1989.   By the time I celebrated my 19th birthday I was up to Opus #524.   At that time I was in first year University living in Muenster, SK in residence at St Peters College at the monastery.  I met a poet from New York named Philip Murray who I collaborated with writing music to his words 91 songs in total.  I wrote my 1000th song the week I turned 25 in January 1996.

Even though I was writing all the time and working and performing my own songs at home I never had a band so I didn't play any of the songs in public and I didn't have any money or materials to record proper good quality recordings.  So all my demo's were quite primitive and low quality audio.  I started recording in 1982 singing along with records.  In 1983 I started recording my own versions of songs live on guitar and vocals along with my best friend of the time Zender Millar.    In 1989 Nels Krauss and I rented a 4-track cassette recorder for the first time and I rushed through 55 songs in 7 days just to get them on tape though I didnt have any good quality microphones, headphones and knew nothing about EQ and recording levels etc.   Each year my demo's would get a bit better sounding and a little more polished so to this day I don't feel I have done justice to any original songs I recorded from 1986 to 1994 when I did the bulk of my writing and recording.

THE BEATLES - DRIVE MY CAR (1965)

Album:  Rubber Soul (1965)

Drive My Car" is a song primarily written by Paul McCartney, with lyrical contributions from John Lennon, and first released by The Beatles on the British version of the 1965 album Rubber Soul; it also appeared in North America on the Yesterday and Today collection. The upbeat, lighthearted "Drive My Car" was used as the opening track for both albums.

The song's male narrator is told by a woman that she is going to be a famous movie star, and she offers him the opportunity to be her chauffeur, adding "and maybe I'll love you." When he objects that his "prospects are good", she retorts that "working for peanuts is all very fine/but I can show you a better time." When he agrees to her proposal, she admits that she does not have a car, "but [she's] found a driver and that's a start."

According to McCartney, "'Drive my car' was an old blues euphemism for sex".

When McCartney arrived at Lennon's Weybridge home for a writing session, he had the tune in his head, but "The lyrics were disastrous, and I knew it." The chorus began, "You can buy me diamond rings", a cliche they'd used twice before in "Can't Buy Me Love" and "I Feel Fine". Lennon dismissed the lyrics as "crap" and "too soft". They decided to rewrite the lyrics and after some difficulty—McCartney said it was "one of the stickiest" writing sessions—they settled on the "drive my car" theme (which Bob Spitz credits to Lennon) and the rest of the lyrics flowed easily from that.

    ABBA - ANDANTE ANDANTE (1980)

Album: Super Trouper (1980)

I had known this song since the album came out right in 1981 at age 10.  A great anthem to close off the album.   I used to use my Smurfs and Star Wars figures to pose concerts at this time and this song was likely one of the "performances".  My mother bought the album in spring of 1981 but then we had an exchange named Lena stay at grandmas house for the summer and she gave us another copy of the album as a gift.

Super Trouper is the seventh studio album by Swedish pop group ABBA, first released in 1980. It features the No.1 singles "The Winner Takes It All" and "Super Trouper". The album became the biggest-selling of 1980 in the UK.   Led by the international hit "The Winner Takes It All", Super Trouper was the group's sixth chart-topping album in the UK. It was also the best-selling album in Britain for 1980. Super Trouper was first released on CD in 1983 by Atlantic Records, again in the 1980s by Polar International, and in the 1990s by Polydor in the USA. The album has been reissued in digitally remastered form four times; first in 1997, then in 2001, again in 2005 as part of the The Complete Studio Recordings box set and as a Deluxe Edition (containing a bonus DVD) in 2011. The previous year's divorce between Björn and Agnetha was explored in "The Winner Takes It All", and the members' lives in Stockholm high society circles coloured the lyrics for "On and On and On". Other well-known songs on the album include the hit single title track "Super Trouper", as well as the electro-dance of "Lay All Your Love on Me".  Probably due to the disco backlash of the time, the album saw ABBA returning to a more straightforward pop sound, as opposed to the preceding (and noticeably more dance-oriented) Voulez-Vous album. The album closed with "The Way Old Friends Do", which was recorded live a year earlier during their 1979 concert tour.

    BASIA - REWARD (1989)

Album: London Warsaw New York (1989)

I used the intro of this song for the promo website for www.tusq.ca for Tusq Restaurant in 2010.

London Warsaw New York is the second studio album by Polish jazz and pop singer–songwriter Basia, released in the United States on October 23, 1989 by Epic Records. The album's title comes from a line in the song "Copernicus" (included on the album): "Our love will take this globe by storm/If it's London, Warsaw, or New York". Basia performed this song live on Late Night with David Letterman on Thanksgiving night on November 22, 1990.

The album earned a platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America on August 11, 1992 for sales of over one million copies in the United States. It produced five singles: "Baby You're Mine", "Cruising for Bruising", "Brave New Hope", a cover version of "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)", and "Copernicus". "Cruising for Bruising" peaked at number twenty-nine on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, Basia's second U.S. Top 40 hit and third (and last to date) entry on the Hot 100. Three singles entered the U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, including "Cruising for Bruising" (which reached number five, tying with "New Day for You" from Basia's previous album, Time and Tide, as her most successful entry on that chart); "Until You Come Back to Me" and "Baby You're Mine" also charted AC though they failed to make the Hot 100. The video for "Until You Come Back to Me" contains footage shot in Seattle, with scenes including the ever debated Alaskan Way Viaduct and the landmark Paramount Theatre.

    ABBA - MOVE ON (1977)

Album:  Abba The Album (1977)

ABBA: The Album is the fifth studio album by the Swedish pop group ABBA. It was released on 12 December 1977 through Polar Music. The album was released in conjunction with ABBA: The Movie, with several of the songs featured in the film.

The album contained the singles "Take a Chance on Me", "The Name of the Game", "Eagle" and "Thank You for the Music" which has been called ABBA's "goodbye" song even though it was released five years before the band officially broke up. It also features the song "Hole In Your Soul", which was performed as the last song at many ABBA concerts, including their final 1979 tour, and two other songs, "One Man, One Woman" and "I'm a Marionette".

The album offers three songs from ABBA's mini-musical "The Girl With The Golden Hair". These songs are "Thank You for the Music", "I Wonder (Departure)" and "I'm a Marionette".

ABBA: The Album was first released on CD in 1984. The album has been reissued in digitally remastered form by PolyGram/Universal Music four times; first in 1997, then in 2001, in 2005 as part of The Complete Studio Recordings box set and again in 2007 as a two disc 'Deluxe Edition'.

Due to the Cold War, Western music was actively discouraged throughout Eastern Europe at the time. Despite this ABBA: The Album sold an unprecedented one million copies in Poland in 1977, exhausting the country's entire allocation of foreign currency. In Russia, only 200,000 copies were permitted to be pressed. However, demand within the USSR indicated they could have sold 40 million copies

    URIAH HEEP - SUNRISE (1972)

Album: The Magicians Birthday (1972)

Uriah Heep is my all time favorite heavy metal group and I consider them to be the last of my all time favorite bands to be discovered from 1980-1990.  The lead singer of Uriah Heep since 1986 is Bernie Shaw who is from Saskatoon, SK who actually was in a band with my friend Doug Hergott.

Uriah Heep are an English rock band formed in London in 1969 and are regarded as one of the seminal hard rock acts of the early 1970s. Uriah Heep's progressive/art rock/heavy metal fusion's distinctive features have always been massive keyboards sound, strong vocal harmonies and (in the early years) David Byron's operatic vocals. Twelve of the band's albums have made it to the UK Albums Chart (Return to Fantasy reached No. 7 in 1975) while of the fifteen Billboard 200 Uriah Heep albums Demons and Wizards was the most successful (#23, 1972). In the late 1970s the band had massive success in Germany, where the "Lady in Black" single was a big hit

PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS - LET EM IN (1976) hit #3

Album:  Wings At The Speed Of Sound (1976)

My mother bought a cassette tape of this album in 1976 when I was 5.  It is very likely that I started listening to it in 1981 at age 10 when I became a Beatles fan making it likely that McCartney II and this one being the first McCartney albums I ever heard.

Let 'Em In" is a song by Wings from their 1976 album Wings at the Speed of Sound. It was written and sung by Paul McCartney and reached the top 3 in both the United States and the United Kingdom: It was a #2 hit in the UK, and in the US it was a #3 pop hit and #1 easy listening hit  In Canada, the song was #3 for three weeks on the pop chart and #1 for three weeks on the MOR chart of RPM Magazine. The single was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of over one million copies. It can also be found on McCartney's 1987 compilation album, All the Best!.

The lyrics include references to some of McCartney's family and friends: sister Suzy, supposedly a reference to Linda, who was "Suzy" in Suzy and the Red Stripes, brother John, Linda's brother John Eastman, Phil and Don, the Everly Brothers, brother Michael, McCartney's brother also known as Mike McGear, and Auntie Gin, McCartney's aunt. In the second verse, "brother Michael" is replaced by "Uncle Ernie" Keith Moon, who played the role of Uncle Ernie in the movie of The Who's Tommy and in the third, "Auntie Gin" is replaced by "Uncle Ian

SHANIA TWAIN - COME ON OVER (1997)

Album:  Come On Over (1997)

I became a fan of Shania from the day she released her first country single in Canada in Summer 1993 when I was 22.    When she hit superstardom in 1995 I became a Shania fanatic for the next 10 years.  Eventually I had 10 T-shirts and a poster shrine in my office at Eastview and had 3 copies each of all her CD's.    I have seen her live in concert 5 times including:  Canadian Country Music Awards Calgary 1998 and all 4 shows she did in Saskatoon, SK at SaskPlace on June 4th 1998 (her 3rd live show ever!), March 29th 1999, June 9th 2004 and June 11th 2004 (I had front row seat).   She released her 4th CD Up on November 18th 2002 and I bought 62 copies at A&B Warehouse the day it came out as pre-sells that I sold on ebay.  Performing on the road with Marilyn we listened to the Up CD everyday on the road for 10 months.  We performed all 4 major singles from The Woman In Me album for almost a decade.

Come On Over" is a song by Canadian singer Shania Twain, it was the ninth single to country radio and title track released from her 1997 album Come On Over. It was written by Twain and her then-husband, Mutt Lange. "Come On Over" was originally released to North American country radio stations in the Fall of 1999. The song went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 2000. "Come On Over" was included in the setlist of the Come On Over Tour, and in a medley during the Up! Tour; it was also performed at the CMAs on September 29, 1999. The song was later included in Twain's 2004 Greatest Hits album

MARILYN FAYE PARNEY - UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN (1993)

Album: Marilyn Faye Parney (1993)

December 25th 1993 - my #5 favorite daily song for 214 days at age 22 now on the road full time with Marilyn.

Marilyn released her debut CD in 1993 and I joined her 2nd band lineup starting in July 1993 at age 22 which caused me to not return to University to get my degree and I also quit playing in the bands The Shade and Whats His Name And The Other Guys.   I also quit my job at Collectors Edge and retired from my radio show History Lesson which was on weekly on CFCR FM in Saskatoon where I taught the history of pop music.   By going on the road it also caused me to stop listening to all the current top 40 hits for the first time and I lost touch with music in the mid 90's making it my least favorite period of popular music.  I had wanted to be in a full time band that would tour especially overseas.  We toured constantly Western Canada as a full band from 1993 to 1996 before switching to a duo to be more financially rewarding for the two of us.  We played certain songs off her debut CD for a full decade promoting her original music.  We also recorded demo's of songs we wrote together.  We recorded a Christmas cassette titled Rose Country Christmas along with Doug Hergott at his home studio in 1994.   Marilyn recorded her 2nd official CD in Vancouver in 1998 titled Unbridled Heart.  In 2002 we co-wrote all the songs together for a new CD Sultry Summer Nights engineered by Neil Meckelborg.   As a duo we toured western Australia in Oct-Dec 1997 - I had cut my long hair right before we went on that tour.   We also performed at the huge Mirande, France country music festival in July 2001 and we met David Soul (Starsky and Hutch) who was the MC for the event.   At the SCMA (Saskatchewan Country  Music Awards) Marilyn and I were nominated for many categories including 17 best musician nominations I received and Marilyn won Saskatchewan Entertainer of the Year in 1997.  We were a couple from 1993 to 2003 and we lived together in Dalmeny, SK from 2000-2003.

CHRIS SQUIRE - RUN WITH THE FOX (1981)

Yes became my new favorite band in 1984 at age 13 and I bought every album they released that year including venturing into solo albums and I had this album by March 1985 at age 14.  Chris is my all time favorite bass guitarist.  I learned this song in 1991 when it appeared on the first Yes CD box set.

December 2nd 1991 - my #1 favorite daily song for 16 days at age 20 in 3rd year University.

Christopher Russell Edward "Chris" Squire (born 4 March 1948), is an English musician, known as the bass guitarist and backing vocalist for the progressive rock group Yes. He is the only member of the group to had never leaved the band, and to appear on every album. He is widely regarded as the dominant bass guitarist among the early seventies British progressive rock bands, influencing peers and later generations of bassists with his incisive sound and elaborately contoured, melodic bass lines.

Squire's bass playing is noted for being aggressive, dynamic, and melodic. Squire's main instrument is a Rickenbacker bass (model RM1999, serial number DC127), which he has owned and played since 1965—the year it was first introduced. In many ways, the Rickenbacker was the polar opposite of the then commonly used Fender bass. (In fact, the electric bass at the time was often referred to as the "Fender.") The RM1999 was a budget, monophonic version of Rickenbacker's 4001 stereo bass. This model was imported into the UK by Rose Morris Ltd (hence the RM prefix on the model number) and, according to Squire's official website, was only the fourth bass of its type to be imported into Britain from the United States.

    TERRY HOKNES - LIKE HEAVEN (2005) Opus #1100 ??

As the new century began a new chapter in songwriting where the focus was more on recording polished songs but writing way less and very sporadic.    I had written 500 songs by the age of 19 and had hit 1000 songs by the age of 25.  But since then I can go over a year at a time without writing a song but really focusing in most cases on a more commercial type of polished song however I still venture into all possible genres.  I continue to play and sing every part on all my songs and recordings.

I hired Neil Meckelborg of Audio Art to record my songs in 2001.  We started out recording a full album at their location downtown behind the Bus depot but eventually worked on recordings at Neil's private studio.  In total we recorded 3 full albums of material of my songs and a full length album of songs I wrote with Marilyn Parney that I produced.  Neil and I also worked on a Trooper hit song karaoke CD in 2001.  I spent 18 months recording with Neil and over 40 songs and over $10,000.00 in studio bills I paid at that time to record the best quality audio ever on my songs.  Neil had used Sonar Cakewalk so I learned how to use it and have used that now for a decade in my own studio.

    NELLY FURTADO - AFRAID (2006)
June 25th 2006 - my #6 favorite daily song for 18 days at age 35 living on Eastview now dating Valerie for 5 months and Nicholas was 9 weeks old.    Me and Michelle were both really big Nelly Furtado fans and had seen her perform live at the Juno Awards 2005 in Winnipeg MB.

Loose is the third studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado. It was released in North America on June 20, 2006 by Geffen Records. Timbaland and his then-protégé Danja produced the bulk of the album, which incorporates influences of dance, R&B and hip hop. The album explores the theme of female sexuality and has been described as introspective or even sad in parts.

The album received criticism because of the sexual image Furtado adopted for the recording, as some critics felt it was a ploy to sell more records. Further controversy rose over accusations of plagiarism on Timbaland's part when recordings were leaked onto YouTube. The record was seen generally as critically and commercially successful. It reached high positions on charts across the world, and according to an August 2009 press release, it had sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling album of 2006–2007 and the twenty-second best-selling album of the 2000s.

The album was heavily promoted, released in several editions and supported by the Get Loose Tour, which is the subject of the concert DVD Loose: The Concert. Eight singles were released from the album, including the US number-one singles "Promiscuous" and "Say It Right", which received Grammy Award nominations for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, respectively. Other standout singles include the UK number-one single "Maneater" and the successful song "All Good Things (Come to an End)".

NIA PEEPLES - THE ENTITY (SEX) (1991)

May 5th 1992 - my #2 favorite daily song for 21 days at age 21 while I lived on my own with my sister Leslie renting a basement on 314 Cumberland Ave while in 3rd year University.

Virenia Gwendolyn "Nia" Peeples (born December 10, 1961) is an American R&B and dance music singer and actress. She is perhaps best known for her role as Nicole Chapman on Fame. She is also known for her role as Karen Taylor Winters on The Young and the Restless and as Sydney Cooke on Walker, Texas Ranger.

Peeples was born in Hollywood, California, the daughter of Elizabeth Joan (née Rubic), a flamenco dancer, and Robert Eugene Peeples. She was raised in West Covina. Her maternal grandparents were immigrants from the Philippines, and were of Filipino, Spanish, French, and German descent. Her father, who was originally from Mississippi, was of Scottish, Irish, English, Native American, and Italian ancestry.

In 1988 she hit #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart with "Trouble," which climbed to #35 on the Hot 100. Her most successful pop single is "Street Of Dreams," which hit #12 on the Hot 100 in 1991.

She made a music video in 1986 of "All You Can Dream", directed by Alan Bloom and conceptualised by Keith Williams, for the purposes of promoting the values of UCLA. She appeared in Prince's video for Raspberry Beret.

THE TOM TOM CLUB - PLEASURE OF LOVE (1983)

Album:  Close To The Bone (1983)

Close to the Bone is an album by the Tom Tom Club that was released in 1983. The Club's musicians are Wally Badarou; Tyrone Downie; Chris Frantz; Roddy Frantz; Rupert Hine; Raymond Jones; Steve Scales; Steven Stanley; Alex Weir; and sisters Lani, Laura, and Tina Weymouth. The album was released on compact disc for the first time on May 19, 2009, as a part of a two-CD deluxe package with the band's first album, Tom Tom Club as part of Universal Music's deluxe editions series.

Tom Tom Club is an American New Wave band founded in 1981 by husband-and-wife team Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, both also known for being members of Talking Heads.

Originally established as a side project from Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club comprised a loose aggregation of musicians, sound engineers, and artists of the Compass Point All Stars family, including Tina Weymouth's sisters and guitarist Adrian Belew, the latter of whom toured with Weymouth and Frantz in the expanded version of Talking Heads in 1980 and 1981.

The following year, the group released a follow-up, Close to the Bone, which was similar in style to their first album but didn't fare as well, though "The Man With The Four Way Hips" was a minor hit on urban radio in the US. The album was released on cassette and vinyl and was not released on CD until May 2009, as part of a Deluxe Edition package of Tom Tom Club's first album. The original British vinyl album was released in six different colors. One of the album's singles, "Pleasure Of Love," was sampled in "Turning You On," by The Treacherous Three, as it happened with "It's Nasty," the sample was re-recorded by a live band rather than just taken from the original recording.

    OUTKAST - PROTOTYPE (2003)

Album:  Love Below (2003)

February 19th 2004 - my #4 favorite daily song for 26 days at age 33 while living at Eastview and have been dating Michelle for 3 weeks.   I had just started playing full time with Ovide Pilon and Liverpool.

GhettoMusick" / "Prototype" is the fourth and final single to be released from hip-hop duo OutKast's fifth studio album, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. "Ghetto Musick" (also written as one word, "Ghettomusick") can be found on Disc 1 (Speakerboxxx) and "Prototype" can be found on Disc 2 (The Love Below.) GhettoMusick was featured on the soundtrack for the video game NBA Live 2004.

"Ghetto Musick" is found on Big Boi's disc Speakerboxxx. The song was released in the UK as the first single from the album. It peaked at #55 on the UK Singles Chart. It was later released elsewhere as a double A-side single with "Prototype". The song samples vocals from Patti LaBelle's "Love, Need and Want You". LaBelle also appears in the video lip syncing to her vocals. "Prototype" is found on André 3000's disc The Love Below, and was released as a double A-side single with "Ghetto Musick". It did not receive as much promotion as "Ghetto Musick," only being promoted with its double A-side single release and its music video.

PAUL MAURIAT & ORCHESTRA - SEULS AU MONDE (ALONE IN THE WORLD) (1967)

Album: Blooming Hits (1967)

My favorite instrumentalist and orchestra ever.  I discovered Paul Mauriat age 15 in 1986 with his #1 album Blooming Hits which featured the #1 top 40 hit Love Is Blue.  His recordings feature the lushest thick string sections that I love to listen to on any recording.

Paul Mauriat (4 March 1925 – 3 November 2006) was a French orchestra leader, conductor of Le Grand Orchestre de Paul Mauriat, who specialized in the easy listening genre. He is best known in the United States for his million selling remake of André Popp's "Love is Blue", which was #1 for 5 weeks in 1968. Other recordings for which he is known include El Bimbo, "Toccata" and "Penelope."   During World War II, Mauriat started his own dance band and toured concert halls throughout Europe. In the 1950s he became musical director to at least two well-known French singers, Charles Aznavour and Maurice Chevalier, touring with them respectively
In 1968 his cover of the Andre Popp/Pierre Cour tune “L’Amour Est Bleu” (“Love Is Blue”) became a number 1 hit in the U.S.. The song spent five weeks at the top of the charts. Two other Mauriat singles also made the charts in the U.S - “Love in Every Room” and the title theme from the movie "Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang". “Love Is Blue” was the first instrumental to hit number 1 on the Billboard charts since the Tornados hit with “Telstar” in 1962 and the only American number-one single to be recorded in France. The success of the song and the album on which it appeared, Blooming Hits, established Mauriat as an international recording star.    In 1969, Mauriat started his first world tour with his Grand Orchestra, visiting countries like the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and other Latin American countries.

PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS - WINO JUNKO (1976)

Album:  Wings At The Speed Of Sound (1976)

My mother bought a cassette tape of this album in 1976 when I was 5.  It is very likely that I started listening to it in 1981 at age 10 when I became a Beatles fan making it likely that McCartney II and this one being the first McCartney albums I ever heard.

June 24th 1988 - my #3 favorite daily song for 3 days at age 17 the week I finished highschool Grade 12.  Celebrating Paul's 46th birthday.

Wings at the Speed of Sound is the fifth album by Wings and was recorded and issued in 1976 in the midst of a large world tour as the follow-up album to the popular Venus and Mars.

Wings at the Speed of Sound was released in late March 1976 and received somewhat lukewarm critical reviews. Rolling Stone's reviewer saw this record as something of a concept album, describing it as "A Day with the McCartneys". The introduction, "Let 'Em In", is sometimes perceived as an invitation for the listener to join the McCartneys on this fantasy day, with explanation of their philosophy ("Silly Love Songs"), a lunch break ("Cook of the House"), and a chance to get to know McCartney's friends (Denny Laine in "The Note You Never Wrote", Jimmy McCulloch in "Wino Junko", etc.).

The album went to number 2 in the United Kingdom (and was the 4th best-selling album of 1976). It became McCartney's most successful American chart album, spending seven unconsecutive weeks at number 1 throughout the summer (and blocking the Beatles' then-new compilation Rock 'n' Roll Music, which reached number 2).

PINK FLOYD - THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES (1979)

Album: The Wall (1979)

The Happiest Days of Our Lives" is a song by Pink Floyd. It appeared on The Wall album in 1979.

The song is approximately 1 minute, 46 seconds in length, beginning with 24 seconds of a helicopter sound effect; followed by the schoolmaster shouting (in a helicopter) "You! Yes, you! Stand still, laddie!". Roger Waters's lead vocal is treated with a reverse echo. The lead instrument is the electric guitar with an added delay effect, playing roots (mostly D, G, and A over a melody in D minor). The bass and guitar figure heard during the verses, G to A, is similar to the one in "Waiting for the Worms", heard much later in the album. During the transition to "Another Brick in the Wall, Part II", the key shifts from D minor to the relative major, F major, with dramatic drum rolls and female harmony vocals.

On the album, "The Happiest Days of Our Lives" segues into "Another Brick in the Wall, Part II" with a loud, high-pitched scream by Roger Waters (this sound is later reprised on "Run Like Hell"). Because of this segue, many radio stations play one right after the other.   In the film based on the album, the sound at the beginning of the song is depicted as coming from a train entering a large tunnel, rather than a helicopter heard on the album. According to Gerald Scarfe, there was supposed to be a puppet of the teacher at the end of the tunnel in the film. Alan Parker made shots of it, but it didn't work out, so they used Alex McAvoy, who played the schoolteacher, to do the scene instead. Before the cut in the middle for the Schoolmaster to mock Pink, somewhat quiet hysterical laughter is heard, extremely similar to the Schoolmaster's voice.

    TERRY HOKNES - FORWARD (1994) Opus #886

    RUSH - YYZ (1981)

Album:  Moving Pictures (1981)

This was the first album I ever heard by Rush when I turned 11 as I ordered this record as one of my 11 records for 1 cent through Columbia House Record Club because it had ranked as one of the biggest albums of 1981.  My best friend Nels Krauss loved Rush more than any other band and Geddy Lee was a big influence on his singing and songwriting styles.  Nels and I recorded 2 albums of originals in 1989.  I saw Rush live in an outdoor concert setting in Nashville TN in 2002.   I have had many people over the years say I either look like Geddy Lee or sing like him.

YYZ" is an instrumental rock piece by Canadian rock band Rush, from the 1981 album Moving Pictures. Following its initial release, it became one of the band's most popular pieces and has been a staple of the band's live performances. The song has been featured on all live concert video recordings in some form. On both the live album Exit...Stage Left (1981), and the concert video recording A Show of Hands (1989), a version of the track is played with drummer Neil Peart integrating his full-length drum solo. "YYZ" also appears on Guitar Hero II.

YYZ is the IATA airport identification code for Toronto Pearson International Airport, located in Mississauga, west of Rush's hometown of Toronto. It is common practice for air navigation aids to broadcast their identifier code in Morse code using VHF omnidirectional range (VOR). A plane using VOR equipment would then always know it is tracking the right station.

Drummer and lyricist Neil Peart has said, in reference to the airport code, "It's always a happy day when YYZ appears on our luggage tags."   The song's introduction, played in a time signature of 5/4, repeatedly renders the letters "Y-Y-Z" in Morse Code using various musical arrangements

THE BEATLES - YER BLUES (1968)

Album:  The Beatles (White Album) (1968)

Yer Blues" is a song by The Beatles, the second song on the third side (or second disc) of The Beatles, also known as The White Album. It is credited to Lennon–McCartney, but was written by John Lennon while in Rishikesh, India.

Containing multiple references to suicide, the lyrics to the song are remarkably dark for lyrics of the time period. They are also ripe with references to pop culture (containing a reference to Bob Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man") and cosmology, and were possibly symbolic of Lennon's well-documented battles with his psychological demons. Lennon said in a Rolling Stone interview that he used the humorous title as something of a defence mechanism, so that if anyone criticised the song, he could write it off as a parody; otherwise he claimed to be sincere about the song's content. In the original demo of the song, Lennon sings "I feel so insecure [as opposed to "suicidal"], just like Dylan's Mr. Jones".

"Yer Blues" was recorded in EMI Studio Two's "annexe", which was actually a large closet in the control room. In interviews for the Beatles Anthology series, Ringo Starr affectionately recalls recording this song in the stripped-down conditions, saying it was like the old days of live performances by The Beatles. The stripped-down, bluesy nature of the song bears similarity to much of Lennon's early solo output, including "Cold Turkey" and his 1970 John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album and marks a retreat from Lennon's concern with studio experimentation that marked such songs as "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "Strawberry Fields Forever".
