BASIA - FROM NOW ON (1988)

Album: Tide And Tide (1988)

Time and Tide is the debut album by Polish jazz and pop singer–songwriter Basia, released in the United States on August 21, 1987 by Epic Records. Co-produced and mostly co-written by Basia herself and Danny White, it showcases considerable influences from Brazilian music, noted in the track "Astrud", a tribute to Astrud Gilberto.

On November 3, 1989 the album was awarded a platinum sales certification by the RIAA for surpassing one million copies sold in the U.S. alone, with the singles "Time and Tide", "New Day for You", and "Promises" all achieving adult contemporary success and the former becoming a top thirty pop hit as well. "New Day for You" was also covered in Japanese by J-pop and future enka singer and actress Yoko Nagayama.  Time and Tide was directly followed by the even more successful London Warsaw New York.

Basia Trzetrzelewska (born September 30, 1954) is a Polish singer-songwriter and record producer. She established a successful international recording career featuring characteristically Latin-flavoured jazz-pop crossover songs during the late 1980s and early 1990s and the late 2000s and 2010s, particularly in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Japan. She is noted for possessing a wide vocal range, approximately three octaves that span from contralto to soprano tessituras, as well as her singular jazz-influenced stylings and multi-layered harmonies

THE BEACH BOYS - DO IT AGAIN (1968) hit #20

December 1st 1988 - my #7 favorite daily song for 3 days at age 17 the fall after graduating high school.

Do It Again" is a song written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love for the American rock band The Beach Boys. It was first released as a single by The Beach Boys in 1968 on Capitol Records. The song was recorded in May and June 1968 and was included on the band's 1969 album 20/20. The B-side of the single release was "Wake the World". The song was produced by Brian and Carl Wilson. It features Mike Love on lead vocals.

The lyrics to the song, originally entitled "Rendezvous", were inspired after a day Mike had spent at the beach in which he had gone surfing with an old friend named Bill Jackson. Mike then showed the lyrics to Brian, who proceeded to write the music to Mike's lyrics of nostalgia. Brian has stated in the past that he believes the song was the best collaboration that he and Mike ever did.

Many critics and fans noted the return to the surfing style, which the band had generally avoided since 1964. Carl later explained the transition back to their old style in Melody Maker:

"Yes, I suppose it has got the old Beach Boys surfing sound. It's back to that surfing idea with the voice harmony and the simple, direct melody and lyrics. We didn't plan the record as a return to the surf or anything. We just did it one day round a piano in the studio. Brian had the idea and played it over to us. We improved on that and recorded it very quickly, in about five minutes. It's certainly not an old track of ours; in fact it was recorded only a few weeks before it was released. We liked how it turned out and decided to release it

    10cc - DONNA (1972) hit #2 in UK
Donna is the first single by British art rock/pop band 10cc. Released in 1972, it peaked at #2 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was written by Kevin Godley and Lol Creme.

"Donna", a parody of doo wop songs (see also Donna by Ritchie Valens), was originally written as a potential B-side to the song "Waterfall". The song features sharp contrasts between falsetto in the chorus (Creme) and deep monotone vocals (Godley) in the verse. The style in which "Oh! Donna..." is performed mimics that of the track Oh! Darling by The Beatles, from their album Abbey Road.

Band member Eric Stewart has said: "We knew it had something. We only knew of one person who was mad enough to release it, and that was Jonathan King." The song was subsequently released on King's UK Records label. The band had considered releasing it under the name of Doctor Father Part Two, resurrecting a band name they had used for their 1970 song "Umbopo". Band manager Harvey Lisburg said there was "a vague sort of plan at that time to keep on bringing out records under different names until they got a hit".

10cc are an English art rock band who achieved their greatest commercial success in the 1970s. The band initially consisted of four musicians—Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley, and Lol Creme—who had written and recorded together for some three years, before assuming the "10cc" name in 1972.

For the most part, 10cc featured two strong songwriting teams, one 'commercial' and one 'artistic', but both teams injected sharp wit into lyrically dextrous and musically varied songs. Stewart and Gouldman were predominantly pop-song-writers, who created most of the band's accessible songs. By way of contrast, Godley and Creme were the predominantly experimental half of 10cc, featuring an Art School sensibility and cinematic inspired writing. Every member was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer and producer. Most of the band's albums were recorded at their own Strawberry Studios (North) in Stockport and Strawberry Studios (South) in Dorking, with most of those engineered by Stewart.

    ABBA - TROPICAL LOVELAND (1975)

Album:  Abba (1975)

ABBA is the eponymously-titled third studio album by the Swedish pop group ABBA. It was originally released on 21 April 1975 through Polar Music.

Following the Eurovision success of "Waterloo", ABBA saw the band gaining worldwide recognition. "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" topped the charts in Australia, as did "Mamma Mia" shortly after. "SOS" and "Mamma Mia" became hits in both the United States and the United Kingdom, and two of its most famous songs. The album saw ABBA dabble into reggae with "Tropical Loveland" and includes a grand pseudo-classical keyboard instrumental in the traditions of Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman with "Intermezzo No. 1" (originally entitled "Mama").

ABBA was a Swedish pop/rock/disco group formed in Stockholm in 1972, comprising Agnetha Fältskog, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. ABBA is an acronym of the first letters of the band members' first names and is sometimes stylized as the registered trademark ᗅᗺᗷᗅ. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of pop music, topping the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1982. They are also known for winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, giving Sweden its first victory in the history of the contest and being the most successful group ever to take part in the contest

THE POLICE - SPIRITS IN THE MATERIAL WORLD (1981) hit #11

Album: Ghost In The Machine (1981)

I got this album in 1982 as part of my monthly pick through Columbia House record club.   My big brother John Lipscomb really liked the Police and eventually gave me all his records in 1984 when he had outgrown them all.

Spirits in the Material World" is a song by new wave trio The Police, written by Sting. It is the opening track for their 1981 album Ghost in the Machine. The song features bass, guitar, synthesizer, drums, saxophone, and vocals. It has a Jamaican Ska beat which changes to a swaggering rock beat in the chorus. It was released as a single in 1981 and reached number 12 in the United Kingdom and number 11 in the United States of America in early 1982.

Andy Summers's presence on the studio track is considerably less pronounced than on the vast majority of Police songs, and in fact, Sting wanted to record it without him entirely. Having written the song on a synthesizer, he wanted for it to use synthesizer instead of guitar, and to play the synthesizer part himself. Summers thought the synthesizer part should be replaced by guitar, and after considerable argument, they compromised by recording the part on both instruments, with a mix such that the synthesizer drowned out much of Summers's guitar. In live performances this part was played on guitar only, with synthesizer used only for background chords.

The lyrics comment on the nature of man's existence and the failure of his earthly institutions

PAUL McCARTNEY - COMING UP (1980) hit #1

Album:  McCartney II (1980)

A few weeks after John Lennon died on December 8th 1980 my Beatles kick was in full gear and my grandpa borrowed The Beatles Sgt Pepper and McCartney II from the Frances Morrison public library on vinyl and I listened to them for the first time in January 1981 at age 9.  This was the very first time I ever heard any songs by Paul McCartney and the first time I heard any of the songs from Sgt Pepper.

Coming Up" is a song written and performed by Paul McCartney. It is the opening track on his second solo album McCartney II, released in 1980. Like the rest of the album, the song had a minimalist synthesized feel to it. It featured vocals sped up by using vari-speed tape machine. McCartney played all the instruments and shared harmonies with his wife Linda McCartney.  John Lennon liked the song, crediting it for driving him out of retirement to resume recording.

A live version of the song was recorded in Glasgow, Scotland on 17 December 1979 by Wings during their tour of the UK. This version had a much fuller sound and was included as one of the two songs on the B-side of the single; the other B-side was also a Wings song, "Lunchbox/Odd Sox", that dated back to the Venus and Mars sessions. Both B-sides were credited to Paul McCartney & Wings.  In the US, Columbia Records promoted the live version which subsequently received more airplay than the studio version. McCartney was unaware Columbia planned to promote the live version, otherwise he might have pushed for the A-side, which he thought was the stronger version. An executive from Columbia Records explained the switch by stating "Americans like the sound of Paul McCartney's real voice."

In the US, "Coming Up" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of over one million copies. Although the live version received more airplay, Billboard listed the A-side on the Hot 100 for the first 12 weeks on the chart, including three weeks at number one, before switching to the more popular B-side for the remaining nine weeks on the chart

JOURNEY - SEND HER MY LOVE (1983) hit #23

Send Her My Love" is a 1983 song by the American rock band Journey. Released in September of that year as the fourth single from their album Frontiers, this Cain/Perry-penned ballad went to number 23 on the U.S. pop charts later that same year.

Journey released their eighth and biggest-selling studio album, Escape, in 1981. The album, which has thus far sold nine times platinum, went to number one on the album charts that year, and included three top-ten hits: "Who's Cryin' Now", "Don't Stop Believin'", and "Open Arms". The last is Journey's highest-charting single to date, staying at No.2 for six consecutive weeks and ranking at No.34 on Billboard's 1982 year-end Hot 100. MTV videotaped one of their two sold-out shows in Houston, Texas on November 6, 1981 in front of over 20,000 fans.

Capitalizing on their success, the band recorded radio commercials for Budweiser and sold rights to their likenesses and music for use in two video games: the Journey arcade game by Bally/Midway and Journey Escape by Data Age for the Atari 2600.

This success was met with piqued criticism. The 1983 Rolling Stone Record Guide gave each of the band's albums only one star, with Dave Marsh writing that "Journey was a dead end for San Francisco area rock." Marsh later would anoint Escape as one of the worst number-one albums of all time.

Journey's next album, 1983's Frontiers, continued their commercial success, reaching No. 2 on the album charts, selling nearly six million copies. The album generated four Top 40 hits, "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)", which reached #8, "Faithfully", which reached #12, "Send Her My Love", and "After the Fall", both of which reached #23. By this time Journey had become one of the top touring and recording bands in the world. During the subsequent stadium tour, the band contracted with NFL Films to record a video documentary of their life on the road, Frontiers and Beyond. Scenes from the documentary were shot at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with more than 80,000 fans in attendance

THE WILKINSONS - YOU WANT ME (2005)

Album:  Highway (2005)

September 15th 2005 - my #2 favorite daily song for 30 days at age 34 living at Eastview and dating Chantelle and selling on ebay now for over 7 years

The Wilkinsons is a country music trio from Trenton, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1997, the group comprises lead singer Amanda Wilkinson, her brother Tyler Wilkinson, and their father, Steve Wilkinson. The Wilkinsons achieved success late in 1998 with the hit single "26 Cents", a Number One on the Canadian country music charts and Top 5 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts. It was followed by "Fly (The Angel Song)", also a No. 1 in Canada.  Although their U.S. success waned after "26 Cents", The Wilkinsons have continued to have singles in the charts in Canada. Lead singer Amanda Wilkinson has also created several solo recordings in addition to her career in The Wilkinsons.

THE STRAWBS - WHERE IS THIS DREAM OF YOUR YOUTH (1969)

Album:  Strawbs (1969)

I became a fan of The Strawbs in December 1984 at age 13 after borrowing The Best Of Strawbs cassette tape from the JS Wood Library due to their connection to my favorite band at the time Yes which they both shared keyboardist Rick Wakeman.  The Strawbs would be one of the most important groups to me from 1984 to 1991 in my teenage years.

February 2nd 1990 - my #4 favorite daily song for 1 day at age 19 living at the monastery in Muenster, SK at St Peters College for 1st year University.  Liem Nguyen and Calvin Waldbillig also lived in residence as students as my neighbors.

Strawbs is a studio album by English band Strawbs, their first.

Strawbs (or The Strawbs) are an English rock band founded in 1964. Although the band started out as a bluegrass group they eventually moved on to other styles such as folk rock, glam rock and progressive rock. They are best known for their hit Part of the Union, which reached number two in the UK charts in February 1973, and for touring with Supertramp in their Crime of the Century Tour, doing their Hero and Heroine Tour, which drew musical similarities and themes.  They were the first UK signing to Herb Alpert's A&M Records and recorded their first single "Oh How She Changed" b/w "Or Am I Dreaming" in 1968, which was produced and arranged by two highly influential seventies’ producers, Gus Dudgeon and Tony Visconti, who also worked on their critically acclaimed first album, Strawbs, which was released in 1969. (Note: Although that first single was issued in the U.S. on A&M, neither of their first two A&M LP's were issued in the US until around 1975.)

TERRY HOKNES - OVER YOU (2008) lyrics by Shawn Lopes

I have collaborated with many songwriters and my favorite is to work with strong lyricists that I then have control to be creative musically come up with everything.  So in this case I wrote the music, recorded all vocals and all instruments.

Sometimes I sing a song in a bad key as I am showcasing where I think it might be better in a high key for a female vocalist.

I wrote my first song in 1982 at age 11 in Grade 6.     I would sporadically write 18 few songs over the next 4 years.  Starting with my 19th song (Opus #19) I began writing on a very regular basis starting in December 1986 in Grade 11 at Aden Bowman.  This included writing over 58 songs with my best friend Nels Krauss over the period of 1986-1992.  I wrote 97 songs in 1987 and then 215 songs in 1988.   By the time I graduated high school at age 17 I was up to Opus #268.   I wrote another 178 songs in 1989.   By the time I celebrated my 19th birthday I was up to Opus #524.   At that time I was in first year University living in Muenster, SK in residence at St Peters College at the monastery.  I met a poet from New York named Philip Murray who I collaborated with writing music to his words 91 songs in total.  I wrote my 1000th song the week I turned 25 in January 1996.

    FERGIE - GLAMOROUS (2007) hit #1
Glamorous" is a song performed by American recording artist Fergie, taken from her first studio album The Dutchess (2006). The song features vocals from American rapper Ludacris. It was released as the third single from The Dutchess except for the United Kingdom, where it serves as the second single. The song was serviced to mainstream radios on January 23, 2007 and to Rhythmic radios on February 20, 2007 in the United States, through A&M Records, together with will.i.am Music Group and Interscope Records.

It was written by Fergie, Ludacris, will.i.am, Elvis Williams and Polow da Don; the latter also produced the song. "Glamorous" is an airy pop and R&B song that has a slower feel from the album's previous hip-hop and dance tinged singles. The lyrics deal with the protagonist staying rooted despite her success and fame. "Glamorous" garnered generally mixed to positive reviews from music critics, who commented on its smooth, generic sound and for it lyrics, which have been likened to those of Gwen Stefani's Luxurious and Jennifer Lopez's Jenny from the Block.

The song achieved commercial success worldwide, peaking inside the top ten in several countries, including Australia and Ireland, it reached the top three on the singles cahrts. "Glamorous" peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Fergie's second number one hit on the chart as a solo artist. The song also became her third best selling song in the United States, amassing nearly three million copies and earning a double platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The music video for "Glamorous" features Fergie in scenes in which she portrays a successful actress and a teenager, acting as flashbacks from her past.

THE PUSSYCAT DOLLS - WAIT A MINUTE (2007) hit #28
Wait a Minute" is a song from the Pussycat Dolls' debut album, PCD. This single was intentionally set to be released the same time as "I Don't Need a Man", which was released throughout Europe and Oceania. However, due to scheduling and the positive radio airplay of "Buttons", the single was pushed back. In addition, the single was set to be released only in North America, but with the success of "I Don't Need a Man", the single was also released internationally.

Promotional singles were officially sent out to American and Canadian radios on October 17, 2006; however, some promos were sent out before this. Toward the end of 2006, "Wait a Minute" began to be aired on British music channels. On December 4, 2006, it was released as a digital download in UK. The single was released on February 24, 2007 in Australia.

"Wait a Minute" became the group's fifth entry on US Billboard Hot 100. Promotional singles were released and the song was featured in Best Buy advertisements in the US but a full CD was never released, which may have led to its low peak position of number twenty-eight. However the single achieved a slightly higher peak position on the Billboard Pop 100, peaking at number twenty-three. Shortly after its release in the U.S., it was released on February 24, 2007, in Australia and in March in Germany, where a commercial CD single was made available for purchase. In Australia, the song achieved a peak position of number sixteen, becoming the Pussycat Dolls' sixth consecutive top twenty hit, but also their lowest charting single to date, after the five previous singles all charted within the top ten.

In New Zealand, "Wait a Minute" peaked at twenty-four, spending seven weeks on the charts. "Wait a Minuite" became the Pussycat Dolls' only song to date not to become a top ten hit.  The single fared better in the Netherlands where it reached the top ten peaking at number seven. "Wait a Minute" reached the top thirty in Germany and Poland, and the top fifty in Austria and Switzerland.

    ESTELLE - AMERICAN BOY (2008) hit #9
American Boy" is the second single from the album Shine by British R&B singer Estelle and features American rapper Kanye West. The song is her first international single. The song won the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and was also nominated for Song of the Year at the 51st Grammy Awards.

The song was listed at #238 on Pitchfork Media's Top 500 songs of the 2000s

American Boy" is Estelle's biggest hit charting in 18 different official charts in the world. The single debuted at number 72 in UK Singles Chart. It then dropped out and re-entered at number 1 two weeks later, and stayed four weeks at the summit of the chart. "American Boy" remained in the UK Top 40 for 22 consecutive weeks and became the sixth biggest-selling single of 2008. The single has also charted on the Irish Singles Chart the same week where it entered at number eight on downloads and peaked at number two.

In the U.S, the song debuted at #98, her first appearance in Billboard Hot 100. The single rose to #9 on the chart and #8 on Hot Digital Songs. As previously mentioned above, the single and its parent album were then removed from the U.S iTunes store, prompting the single to plummet from #11 to #37 on the following week's Hot 100. The album and song were then added back to the iTunes store on 9 September 2008. After this, "American Boy" reached a new peak on the Hot 100 of #9, becoming Estelle's first U.S. top ten hit. Also, it debuted at #96 and peaked at #9 on the Canadian Hot 100. The song has sold over 1,500,000 downloads in the US.

The single debuted at number 7 in Australia and so far peaked number 3. "American Boy" is Estelle's highest charting single since "1980", which peaked number 36. In New Zealand the single first appeared on 1 April 2008 on New Zealand Chart debuting at number 25. After a couple of weeks, it cracked the top 5 of the chart peaking number 5. It was also her first appearance in New Zealand RIANZ Chart.

    DANITY KANE - DAMAGED (2008) hit #10

The song was released to legal digital download sites on January 29, 2008 in the United States. In the UK, despite their album being giving an advertising campaign in the UK iTunes store, the song failed to chart on the top 100 songs or the top 100 pop songs. However, it has debuted on the Canadian Hot 100 at number seventy-two and has so far peaked at number twenty-six.

In Australia, despite a total lack of promotion, the song continues to steadily climb the iTunes top 100 songs charts, and has peaked at 25. The physical CD single was released on August 23, and subsequently Damaged debuted on the official Australian ARIA Urban charts at number 12

    PINK - SO WHAT (2008) hit #1
So What" is a song recorded by American recording artist Pink for her fifth studio album, Funhouse (2008). The song was written by Pink, Max Martin and Shellback while production was handled by Martin. Selected as the album's debut single, "So What" was first released to mainstream radios on August 25, 2008, through LaFace and Jive Records. The song incorporates musical styles of pop-rock and dance-pop while consisting of a martial beat and synth backing. The lyrics are based on her separation from motocross racer Carey Hart, which occurred six months prior to the release.

"So What" received generally positive reviews from contemporary music critics; many praised it for its aggressive and empowering nature while others deemed it childish and bratty. The song was also successful commercially, topping the charts in several countries across Europe and Oceania and peaking within the top five worldwide. In the United States, the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her first number one hit on the chart as a solo artist and her second overall. "So What" also became her highest selling single in the United States, with sales of four million downloads.

The music video for "So What" was directed by longtime collaborator Dave Meyers. It shows Pink drinking while on an all-terrain vehicle, sawing down a tree, streaking on a red carpet appearance and other activities. The video also features a cameo appearance from Hart. Pink performed "So What" on MTV Europe Music Awards 2008 on November 6, 2008. The song was nominated for several awards, eventually winning the MTV Europe Music Award for the Most Addictive Track.

TERRY HOKNES - SONG OF THE MARXIST CRITIC (1990)

Demo Opus 645 lyrics by Philip Murray

Even though I was writing all the time and working and performing my own songs at home I never had a band so I didn't play any of the songs in public and I didn't have any money or materials to record proper good quality recordings.  So all my demo's were quite primitive and low quality audio.  I started recording in 1982 singing along with records.  In 1983 I started recording my own versions of songs live on guitar and vocals along with my best friend of the time Zender Millar.    In 1989 Nels Krauss and I rented a 4-track cassette recorder for the first time and I rushed through 55 songs in 7 days just to get them on tape though I didnt have any good quality microphones, headphones and knew nothing about EQ and recording levels etc.   Each year my demo's would get a bit better sounding and a little more polished so to this day I don't feel I have done justice to any original songs I recorded from 1986 to 1994 when I did the bulk of my writing and recording.

    BASIA - BABY YOU'RE MINE (1989)

Album: London Warsaw New York (1989)

London Warsaw New York is the second studio album by Polish jazz and pop singer–songwriter Basia, released in the United States on October 23, 1989 by Epic Records. The album's title comes from a line in the song "Copernicus" (included on the album): "Our love will take this globe by storm/If it's London, Warsaw, or New York". Basia performed this song live on Late Night with David Letterman on Thanksgiving night on November 22, 1990.

The album earned a platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America on August 11, 1992 for sales of over one million copies in the United States. It produced five singles: "Baby You're Mine", "Cruising for Bruising", "Brave New Hope", a cover version of "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)", and "Copernicus". "Cruising for Bruising" peaked at number twenty-nine on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, Basia's second U.S. Top 40 hit and third (and last to date) entry on the Hot 100. Three singles entered the U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, including "Cruising for Bruising" (which reached number five, tying with "New Day for You" from Basia's previous album, Time and Tide, as her most successful entry on that chart); "Until You Come Back to Me" and "Baby You're Mine" also charted AC though they failed to make the Hot 100. The video for "Until You Come Back to Me" contains footage shot in Seattle, with scenes including the ever debated Alaskan Way Viaduct and the landmark Paramount Theatre.

ABBA - ONE MAN ONE WOMAN (1977)

Album:  Abba The Album (1977)

ABBA: The Album is the fifth studio album by the Swedish pop group ABBA. It was released on 12 December 1977 through Polar Music. The album was released in conjunction with ABBA: The Movie, with several of the songs featured in the film.

The album contained the singles "Take a Chance on Me", "The Name of the Game", "Eagle" and "Thank You for the Music" which has been called ABBA's "goodbye" song even though it was released five years before the band officially broke up. It also features the song "Hole In Your Soul", which was performed as the last song at many ABBA concerts, including their final 1979 tour, and two other songs, "One Man, One Woman" and "I'm a Marionette".

The album offers three songs from ABBA's mini-musical "The Girl With The Golden Hair". These songs are "Thank You for the Music", "I Wonder (Departure)" and "I'm a Marionette".

ABBA: The Album was first released on CD in 1984. The album has been reissued in digitally remastered form by PolyGram/Universal Music four times; first in 1997, then in 2001, in 2005 as part of The Complete Studio Recordings box set and again in 2007 as a two disc 'Deluxe Edition'.

Due to the Cold War, Western music was actively discouraged throughout Eastern Europe at the time. Despite this ABBA: The Album sold an unprecedented one million copies in Poland in 1977, exhausting the country's entire allocation of foreign currency. In Russia, only 200,000 copies were permitted to be pressed. However, demand within the USSR indicated they could have sold 40 million copies

    NELLY FURTADO - FORCA (2004)

Album: Folklore (2003)

July 28th 2004 - my #3 favorite daily song for 37 days at age 33 living with Michelle/Brianna at Eastview.  Me and Michelle both loved this album and we saw her sing live at the Juno Awards in 2005 in Winnipeg

Força" (Portuguese for "strength") is a pop folk song written by Portuguese-Canadian singer Nelly Furtado, and Gerald Eaton and Brian West for Furtado's second studio album Folklore. It is sung mainly in English, with the chorus completely in the Portuguese language. It was produced by Track & Field and received a positive reception from music critics. Released in June 2004, the song was chosen as the official anthem of the 2004 European Football Championship held in Portugal.

Furtado said about the song: "When I was touring in Portugal, people would frequently say goodbye to me by saying "Força", which is Portuguese slang. It translates as "Keep going", or "Kick ass". It's also associated with sports, especially football. I put a feminine twist on the idea of how you feel when you’re watching your favorite team. When you tie that into nationality, it becomes pretty intense. So this is a happy song, a burst of energy. Plus, we have [banjoist] Béla Fleck playing on the song. His contribution here is amazing

JON ANDERSON - HEART OF THE MATTER (1980)

Album: Songs Of Seven (1980)

I saw Jon Anderson live in concert in April 2011 in New York.  He did not play this song.

Song of Seven is the second solo album by Yes lead singer Jon Anderson, released in 1980, and his first to utilize an actual band (the New Life Band). It was released during his first hiatus from Yes and supported by his first solo tour. "Some Are Born", "Days", "Everybody Loves You" and "Hear It" were originally written and demoed during the Tormato sessions, but the arrangements recorded on Song of Seven draw more on Celtic & R&B influences.  All songs written by Jon Anderson unless indicated.
