| THE YELLOW BALLOON - PANAMA RED (1967) Album: Yellow Balloon (1967) I stopped buying records in 1992 at the age of 21. Our local record shop Tramps had a 1/2 price sale on all vinyl so I went in and bought anything I thought was cool including another great obscure late 1960's band which I think I paid $15.00 for this album. Luckily it finally came out on CD many years later. February 1992 - age 21 in 3rd year University. I had convinced Tramps downtown on 2nd Avenue to let me work for them sorting and cleaning up their huge record inventory in exchange for trade credit towards records which eventually led to them hiring me full time. After a 10 year run of buying 1960's albums on vinyl this would be the very last one for me to become my #1 favorite song on February 13 1992. Except for albums by Spirit I would not listen to another 1960's album for 5 years after this. I had lent this album to my friend Xylon Cozens around 1994 to give him ideas about vocal harmonies as he was preparing his new CD. The Yellow Balloon was an American sunshine pop band, produced by Gary Zekley. The group is notable for featuring Don Grady (sometimes billed as "Luke R. Yoo") of Mouseketeers and My Three Sons fame. Other band members hailed from Oregon and Arizona. They were led by Alex Valdez (lead singer), and included Frosty Green (keyboards), Don Braught (bass guitar), and Paul Canella (lead guitar). The band at one time also included Daryl Dragon, later the male half of Captain & Tennille. The Yellow Balloon released multiple singles, including their hit "Yellow Balloon" which peaked at #25 on the Billboard 100 Chart and "Good Feelin' Time"both taken from the group's debut album. The band's 1967 self-titled LP was released through Canterbury Records and besides featuring the hit single "Yellow Balloon", also included two songs co-written by former The Mamas & the Papas singer Jill Gibson. |
| ONE BAD SON - HELLTOWN (2006)
Album: This Agression Will Not Stand (2006)
One Bad Son is a
Canadian rock band from
Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan,
Canada.
The band was formed in 2004 in Saskatoon. Their first two full length albums were released by independent record label Versailles Records in New York. In 2010, the band released The Rustbucket EP independently. In 2010, the band released an iPhone app that allows users to make their own version of the band's song 'Rustbucket'. In 2010, the band moved from Saskatoon to Vancouver, and shortly thereafter signed a record deal with 604 Records. The band's third album is being completed in Vancouver, with an expected release in 2012. It is being produced by Danny Craig, drummer for Canadian band Default.

| THE ROLLING STONES - TELL ME (1964) hit #24 Album: More Hot Rocks (1972) I received Tattoo You for Xmas 1981 at age 10 and then quickly followed up with Big Hits for my 11th birthday on January 15th 1982 and then sometime afterwards got More Hot Rocks and Aftermath. At age 11 these was the only songs I knew of the Stones but to this date would say More Hot Rocks is my favorite Stones album.
Tell Me" is a song by English
rock and roll band
The Rolling Stones, featured on their 1964
self-titled album (US title: England's Newest Hit
Makers). It was later released as single
A-side in the US only, becoming the first
Jagger/Richards song that the band released as a single
A-side, and their first record to enter the US Top 40. The
single reached #24 in the US and #1 in Sweden. It was not
released as a single in the UK.
Written by singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards, "Tell Me" is a pop ballad. Richie Unterberger, on Allmusic, said in his review of the song, "It should be pointed out ... that the Rolling Stones, even in 1964, were more versatile and open toward non-blues-rooted music than is often acknowledged by critics." The Rolling Stones' two previous singles bear out this observation: one had been the Lennon–McCartney-penned "I Wanna Be Your Man" (later recorded by The Beatles as well); another was Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away". |
| WHITNEY HOUSTON - I HAVE NOTHING (1993) hit #4
I Have Nothing" is a song by American singer
Whitney Houston and released as the third single from
The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album on February
20, 1993 by
Arista Records. The song was written by
David Foster and
Linda Thompson, and produced by Foster. The song is a
richly orchestrated power ballad about deep love and
commitment to one's lover.
After the back-to-back successes of Houston's "I Will Always Love You" and "I'm Every Woman", "I Have Nothing" became yet another hit, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and being certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The song also became a hit on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart, with a number four peak, and a number-one peak on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. Houston established another historic milestone in Billboard chart history with the two previous singles off the soundtrack and this song, becoming the first artist to have three songs inside the top 11 of the Hot 100 chart in the same week since the chart began using Broadcast Data System and SoundScan data in 1991. Internationally, the song reached the number one in Canada, the top five in Ireland and the United Kingdom, and peaked within the top forty in Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Switzerland. It received various nominations, including for Best Original Song at the 1993 Academy Awards, for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television at the 36th Grammy Awards of 1994, and for Best R&B Single, Female at the 1994 Soul Train Music Awards. As of most of Houston's material, the song has been an extremely popular choice on many reality television series around the world, in particular American Idol, on which it has become one of the most performed songs ever, having been covered six times since 2003. "I Have Nothing" was nominated for Best Original Song at the 65th Annual Academy Awards on March 29, 1993. David Foster and Linda Thompson were nominated for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media for the song at the 36th Annual Grammy Awards on March 1, 1994. The song was also nominated for Best R&B Single, Female but lost to Toni Braxton's "Breathe Again" at the 8th Annual Soul Train Music Awards on March 15, 1994. Foster and Thompson received the award for Most Performed Song from a Film for the song at the 10th BMI Film & Television Awards on May 17, 1994 |
| FEIST - 1 2 3 4 (2007) hit #8
1234" (pronounced "One Two Three Four") is a song
from
Feist's third studio album,
The Reminder. It is Feist's most successful single
to date. The song was co-written by
Sally Seltmann, an Australian singer-songwriter who also
recorded under the stage name New Buffalo, and Feist.
It remains Feist's biggest hit single in the USA to date,
and her only song to chart on the
Billboard Hot 100 and
UK Top 40.
"1234" was nominated for Grammy Awards in the categories of Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Short Form Music Video. Likewise, the success of the song largely contributed to Feist's other nominations that year for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album. It also won the Juno award for Single of the Year on 6 April 2008 in Calgary. This song was #19 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007, and #9 on the list of Readers' 25 Best Songs of 2007. It was also ranked #5 on Amazon.com's Best Songs of 2007. Pitchfork Media deemed the video the fifth best video of the decade, and named the song #16 on top 100 tracks of 2007. Blender named the video #2 on The Top 10 Music Videos of 2007. The song was digitally released through iTunes Music Store. It became famous after its use in an iPod nano commercial. It also appeared in an Australian commercial for eBay. Since its digital release, "1234" peaked at #2 at the US Hot Digital Songs. The single has also reached #8 in the US Hot 100, #10 at the US Pop 100, and #34 at the US Modern Rock Tracks chart. As of July 25, 2011, "1234" had 1.2 million downloads in the US. The single's unexpected success led to its release worldwide. In the UK it proved to become a huge hit, making it in the top 10 peaking at #8. It had a very successful release in Canada making it at number 2. The song has also entered the top 10 in other European countries. The single's success has made Feist famous globally and it has boosted the remaining sales. It also managed to debut at number 67 on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart, as digital tracks were added from the 5th of November 2007 to the singles chart in Australia. It later entered the top 50 of the chart in late December, and has thus far peaked at #36. It also ranked #34 in the Triple J Hottest 100, and #1 on Amazon.com's Top-selling Songs of 2007. Time magazine named "1234" one of The 10 Best Songs of 2007, ranking it at #2 after "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse. Writer Josh Tyrangiel called the song a “masterpiece”, praising Feist for singing it “with a mixture of wisdom and exuberance that's all her own." |
| TERRY HOKNES - RUNNING AROUND (2001) Opus #772 I wrote this song in 1991 for Blackberry Way when I was 20 but landed up playing it with The Shade and recording a version in 1993. I re-recorded this newer version with Neil Meckelborg engineering. As the new century began a new chapter in songwriting where the focus was more on recording polished songs but writing way less and very sporadic. I had written 500 songs by the age of 19 and had hit 1000 songs by the age of 25. But since then I can go over a year at a time without writing a song but really focusing in most cases on a more commercial type of polished song however I still venture into all possible genres. I continue to play and sing every part on all my songs and recordings. I hired Neil Meckelborg of Audio Art to record my songs in 2001. We started out recording a full album at their location downtown behind the Bus depot but eventually worked on recordings at Neil's private studio. In total we recorded 3 full albums of material of my songs and a full length album of songs I wrote with Marilyn Parney that I produced. Neil and I also worked on a Trooper hit song karaoke CD in 2001. I spent 18 months recording with Neil and over 40 songs and over $10,000.00 in studio bills I paid at that time to record the best quality audio ever on my songs. Neil had used Sonar Cakewalk so I learned how to use it and have used that now for a decade in my own studio. |
| EDDIE MURPHY - PARTY ALL THE TIME (1985) hit #2
Party All the Time" was a single originally recorded
by comedian and actor
Eddie Murphy in 1985, written and produced by
Rick James and Kevin Johnston at James's home studio in
Buffalo, New York. The single reached No. 2 on the
Billboard Hot 100, kept off the top by
Lionel Richie's "Say
You, Say Me".Rick James also provided some vocals for
the song.
"Weird Al" Yankovic covered part of the song in his 1986 polka medley "Polka Party!" In 2006, house DJ and producer Sharam Tayebi of Deep Dish released a remix of the song, known simply as "PATT" (an acronym for "Party All The Time"), that reached No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart. The subsequent music video is a parody of the original, which had featured Murphy, James, members of the Stone City Band and some backup singers recording the song in a studio. In July 2009, Aubrey O'Day did a cover of the song along with ex-Danity Kane member D. Woods's sister Shanell Woodgette and Grammy Award-winning producer Maestro. In April 2012, Asher Roth released "Party Girl", the lead single from his second studio album Is This Too Orange?, which samples "Party All the Time" In March/April 2009, VH1 listed it as #80 on its 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s countdown (though Murphy had another hit with "Put Your Mouth on Me", which reached the Top 40 charts in 1989). On September 11, 2010, Matthew Wilkening of AOL Radio ranked the song at #36 on the list of the 100 Worst Songs Ever, stating, "If only Eddie Murphy knew an amazingly sharp, funny, music-loving comedian to help rip this 'song' apart..." |
| SPIRIT - BLACK SATIN NIGHTS (1984) Album: The Thirteenth Dream / Spirit Of 84 (1984) Spirit recorded their most famous anthem yet again for this final reunion album featuring the original members. I first bought this album on used cassette in 1991. August 9th 1991 - my #2 favorite daily song for 6 days at age 20 before entering 3rd year University and performing through the summer with my band Blackberry Way featuring Gerard Saretsky and Jed Evans and we had the #2 most played Canadian content album with our debut release on CFCR FM. May 21st 2003 - my #8 favorite daily song for 38 days at age 32 while staying at grandmas house short term while I looked around to buy my first house on my own after living in Dalmeny, SK.
The Thirteenth Dream was the second (and
final) "reunion" album from
Spirit. It features re-recordings of several of their
best-loved tracks, along with three new songs. The most
noteworthy things that can be said about the album are in
regards to the excellent fidelity of the album, as it was
originally recorded by an audiophile label and is an early
digital recording (dating from December of 1982), and
that it was the first
Spirit album to be released on
CD, as it appeared in that format from
Mercury Records in
West Germany in 1984 (consequently, it is also one of
the best sounding early CD releases from a rock band,
probably due to the recording technology that was
implemented). As previously mentioned, this album was
originally released on CD in 1984. However, the original CD
is incredibly rare. It was later reissued in 2004 by Beat
Goes On in a two-fer with
Future Games. As a side note, a version of Elijah (originally
released on
Spirit) was recorded during these sessions and issued as
the b-side of a
maxi single. It has not appeared on any of the CD
releases, or on the LP. The album was issued as Spirit of '84 in
the United States

| FUN - WE ARE YOUNG (2012) hit #1
We Are Young" is a song by American band
Fun. and the first single from their second studio album
Some Nights. It was released on September 20, 2011.
Musically, "We Are Young" is a
power ballad that incorporates the genres of
indie pop,
alternative rock, and
power pop. The song received generally positive reviews
from music critics, with many noting the song as a
breakthrough for the indie genre and praising the song's
catchiness. "We Are Young" has attained commercial success
worldwide, reaching number one in several countries.
The track initially only gained attention from online media, but was soon covered by the television show Glee. With the Glee version having success on the charts, the song was licensed for use in a Chevrolet Sonic commercial that aired during Super Bowl XLVI. The single song propelled the band into mainstream success, topping the digital charts in February 2012 and becoming a crossover hit, peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 through airplay on contemporary hit radio stations, topping the chart for six weeks straight. It is also the first song to log seven weeks of 300,000 or more in digital sales, a record that was previously held by Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" (2010). "We Are Young" has been certified five-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, and is both Fun and Monáe's first charting single on the Hot 100, as well as their first number-one single. The song also topped the Hot 100 Airplay chart with 120 million impressions in seven weeks, becoming the first group since Destiny's Child's "Survivor" (2001) to do so. |
| TERRY HOKNES - GOODBYE TO MY BABY (2006) Opus #823 written in 1992
at age 21 As the new century began a new chapter in songwriting where the focus was more on recording polished songs but writing way less and very sporadic. I had written 500 songs by the age of 19 and had hit 1000 songs by the age of 25. | LOUIS ARMSTRONG - WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD (1988) hit #32
What a Wonderful World" is a song written by
Bob Thiele (as "George Douglas") and
George David Weiss. It was first recorded by
Louis Armstrong and released as a single in 1968. Thiele
and Weiss were both prominent in the music world (Thiele as
a producer and Weiss as a composer/performer). Armstrong's
recording was inducted in the
Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. The publishing for this
song is controlled by Memory Lane Music Group,
Carlin Music Corp., and Bug Music, Inc.
Intended as an antidote for the increasingly racially and politically charged climate of everyday life in the United States, the song also has a hopeful, optimistic tone with regard to the future, with reference to babies being born into the world and having much to look forward to. The song was initially offered to Tony Bennett, who turned it down. Thereafter, it was offered to Louis Armstrong. The song was not initially a hit in the United States, where it sold fewer than 1,000 copies because the head of ABC Records did not like the song and so did not promote it, but was a major success in the United Kingdom, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart. In the US, the song hit #116 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Chart. It was also the biggest-selling single of 1968 in the UK where it was among the last pop singles issued by HMV Records before becoming an exclusive classical music label. The song made Louis Armstrong the oldest male to top the chart, at sixty-six years and ten months old. Armstrong's record was broken in 2009 when a cover version of "Islands in the Stream" recorded for Comic Relief — which included 68-year-old Tom Jones — reached number one. ABC Records' European distributor EMI forced ABC to issue a What A Wonderful World album in 1968 (catalogue number ABCS-650) which did not chart in the US due to ABC's non-promotion of it, but did chart in the UK where it was issued by Stateside Records with catalogue number SSL 10247 and peaked on the British chart at #37. The song gradually became something of a standard and reached a new level of popularity. In 1988, Louis Armstrong's 1968 recording was featured in the film Good Morning, Vietnam and was re-released as a single, hitting #32 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in February 1988. The single charted at number one for the fortnight ending June 27, 1988 on the Australian chart. |
| MARTIKA - TOY SOLDIERS (1989) hit #1
Toy Soldiers" is a song by
Martika appearing on her
eponymous debut album in 1989 as a ballad. The single
was a number-one hit in the United States. It was sampled by
Eminem in his 2004 single, "Like
Toy Soldiers". The song's subject matter concerns drug
abuse and how it can devastate the lives of the user and
those who care about them.
Martika is the only one who sings throughout the song, although she is joined on the chorus by some of her former castmates from Kids Incorporated, including the Black Eyed Peas's Stacy Ferguson, Rahsaan Patterson, Renee Sands, as well as later cast members Jennifer Love Hewitt and Devyn Puett, as backup vocalists. The song spent two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and New Zealand while reaching number five in both the United Kingdom and Australia. When it spent its first week at number one, it had leapt over Madonna's "Express Yourself" and kept that song from reaching the top spot. On Billboard's year-end chart for 1989, "Toy Soldiers" placed number 29. It was Martika's only number-one single in the U.S., and her highest-ranking single in the United Kingdom. The single was certified Gold in the United States by the RIAA. In March and April 2009, VH1 ran a countdown of the 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 80s. "Toy Soldiers" placed at #67 on the countdown despite the fact that Martika had three other Top 40 hits: "More Than You Know" (#18); "I Feel the Earth Move" (#25); and "Love ... Thy Will Be Done" (#10). |
| PAUL McCARTNEY - HOPE OF DELIVERANCE (1993) Album: Off The Ground (1993) I bought this CD in July 1993 at age 22 after finishing 4th year university and meeting Marilyn for the first time and joining her band to go on tour. July 19th 1993 - my #8 favorite daily song for 24 days at age 22 after finishing 4th year University and meeting Marilyn and joining her band that month. November 17th 2011 - my #9 favorite daily song for 38 days at age 40 listening to all of Paul's recordings chronologically for a year while living at Avenue M South with Valerie now married 4 years.
Hope of Deliverance" is a hit song by
Paul McCartney, featured on his 1993 album
Off the Ground. It became a hit in
his native UK, reaching #18. It did not fare
well on the
Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #83,
but did better on the
Billboard Adult Contemporary chart,
hitting #9. It also did very well in Germany,
reaching #3 there, and is still gaining a lot of
airplay in Central and Eastern European radios
as well as in South America. A popular
remix also was released around the time the
single was released, and picked up massive
airplay in clubs
Off the Ground is the ninth solo studio album by former Beatles member Paul McCartney, released in 1993. As his first studio album of the 1990s, it is also the follow-up to the acclaimed Flowers in the Dirt (1989).
The lead single, "Hope of Deliverance", was released in the
last week of December 1992 and the album followed in
February 1993. While Off the Ground hit #5 in the UK
and reached #17 in the US, where it eventually went gold, it
was the first Paul McCartney album to not contain a sizeable
US hit single since
Wings'
Wild Life in 1971. While "Hope of Deliverance"
floundered there, it managed to reach #18 in the UK, where "C'Mon
People" became a minor hit as well. The album spent only six
weeks inside the Top 100 in the UK, eventually reaching #5
there. In Germany, the album was particularly successful and
certified platinum with "Hope of Deliverance" reaching #3 on
the singles chart and the album spending four weeks at #2.
Some weeks after its release, McCartney launched "The
New World Tour", taking in many successful shows across
the globe during the summer months. These gigs were
documented on the album
Paul Is Live, which followed at the end of 1993

| HEART - ALONE (1987) hit #1
Alone" is a
song composed by
Billy Steinberg and
Tom Kelly. It first appeared on via Steinberg and
Kelly's pet project, 1983's I-Ten, Taking a Cold Look.
It was later recorded by
John Stamos in his role as Gino Minelli, on the original
soundtrack of the
CBS
sitcom
Dreams in 1984. American
rock band
Heart made it a number one US and Canadian hit in 1987.
Twenty years later,
Céline Dion recorded it for her album
Taking Chances.
The song was given to Heart and released as the first single from their ninth studio album Bad Animals in May 1987. Heart's version is a power ballad that begins with a piano line and a subdued vocal from Ann Wilson before exploding into an amplified hard rock chorus. The song has been covered numerous times on American Idol as well as by artists such as Celine Dion, but is viewed as being exceptionally difficult to cover because of Ms. Wilson's legendary performance. According to a Songfacts interview with Steinberg, Kelly (an experienced session singer) provided the high harmony parts on the record "Alone" is Heart's biggest hit, spending three weeks at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 that July. It ranked number 2 on the Billboard Year-End Top Pop Singles of 1987. It is also their most successful single in the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart. The song's popular video featured the band in a synched live performance. An "unplugged" version of the song later appeared on Heart's 1995 album The Road Home. Heart is an American rock band who first found success in Canada, later also in the United States and worldwide. Over the group's four decade history, the band has had three primary lineups, with the constant members being lead singer Ann Wilson and guitarist Nancy Wilson. Heart rose to fame in the mid 1970s with music influenced by hard rock and heavy metal as well as folk music. Their popularity declined in the early 1980s, but the band enjoyed a comeback starting in 1985 and experienced even greater success with AOR hits and hard rock ballads into the 1990s. |

| BADFINGER - SWEET TUESDAY MORNING (1971) Album: Straight Up (1971) My friend Zender Millar had this album at his house when we grew up. It is one of the first records I ever heard around age 8 or 9. He eventually gave me the record about 10 years later but in the meantime due to the Beatles connection Badfinger would be one of the first bands I was exposed to and really loved. For a long time I said they were truly the worlds greatest "rock and roll" band. This album was long out of print and was a very expensive record to buy used at Tramps so I eventually got the CD in the 1990's. April 19th 2000 - my #7 favorite daily song for 72 days at age 29 while looking for a place to live with Marilyn Parney Badfinger were a British rock band consisting originally of Pete Ham, Ron Griffiths, Mike Gibbins and Tom Evans; active from 1968 to 1983, and evolving from The Iveys; formed by Ham, Griffiths and David "Dai" Jenkins in Swansea, Wales, in the early 1960s. Joey Molland joined the group in 1969, following the departure of Griffiths. Signed by The Beatles' Apple label in 1968 as The Iveys, they adopted the name Badfinger in 1969. Badfinger had four consecutive worldwide hits in 1970 and 1971: "Come and Get It" (written and produced by Paul McCartney), "No Matter What", "Day After Day", and "Baby Blue". The Ham/Evans-penned Badfinger song, "Without You", became a Billboard number one hit for Harry Nilsson. Straight Up is the third album by power pop band Badfinger, released on 13 December 1971. It is widely regarded as Badfinger's best album, spawning two Top 20 singles in the US and being commercially successful in its own right. The album was released on the The Beatles' Apple Records label and was unavailable for many years after the label folded. It was reissued on CD in 1993 |
| BOBBY CALDWELL - WHAT YOU WON'T DO FOR LOVE (1978) Album: What You Won't Do For Love (1978) February 12th 1990 - my #2 favorite daily song for 6 days at age 19 living in monastery at Muenster.
"What You Won't Do for Love" is a popular
quiet storm single written by Alfons Kettner along with
musician and singer
Bobby Caldwell which he recorded for his debut album,
released in 1978 on the
TK Records label. The album was originally released as
Bobby Caldwell, but the song's popularity led to the
album's name being changed to that of the song.
After gaining a reputation in Miami clubs as a talented musician, TK Records president Henry Stone signed Caldwell to an exclusive contract with TK Records in 1978. Heading to the studio, Caldwell recorded his first album, which was given a redo after Stone felt the album was good but "didn't have a hit". Caldwell returned to the studio and came up with the final product, which included "What You Won't Do for Love". Bobby Caldwell (born August 15, 1951) is an American singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who, despite a prolific musical output over his 30-year career, is still best known for his 1978 hit single "What You Won't Do for Love". |

| GEORGE HARRISON - FISH ON THE SAND (1987) Album: Cloud Nine (1987) George's first new album in 5 years came out in November 1987 and I rushed out and bought a vinyl copy in tribute to owning all his material on record. This is possibly the last new release I bought in the vinyl format. I would soon later get the cassette and then the CD version owning all 3. I taped George off the radio as he was interviewed on Rock Line radio show that winter when I was 16 and in Grade 12. I remember playing Got My Mind Set On You over and over and over again but ignoring the rest of the album which I didnt really get seriously into until 1993. March 12th 1993 - my #3 favorite daily song for 31 days in celebration of George's 50th birthday when I was 22.
Cloud Nine is
George Harrison's tenth
studio album, recorded and released in 1987 after a
five-year hiatus from his recording career. Including the
hit single "Got
My Mind Set on You", Cloud Nine re-established
Harrison as a critically acclaimed and commercially
significant recording artist. It was to be Harrison's final
solo studio album released during his lifetime.
Brainwashed is the final studio album by George
Harrison, released in 2002, almost a year after his death at
age 58.
Frustrated with the changing musical climate, George Harrison suspended his recording career in the early 1980s. He opted to pursue his other interests, such as film production with his own company, Handmade Films. The odd soundtrack or charity song would surface during this period, but otherwise it was a musically silent period for Harrison. By late 1986 — after a substantial break — Harrison felt the desire to make music again. He asked former Electric Light Orchestra leader and fellow musician Jeff Lynne to co-produce the album with him. After having written a round of new compositions (including the songs already contributed to the 1986 film Shanghai Surprise), Harrison entered his home studio, Friar Park, in Henley-on-Thames on 5 January 1987 to begin recording his first new commercial album in five years. Besides Harrison and Lynne, other artists involved in the recording sessions included Jim Keltner and Ringo Starr on drums, Eric Clapton on guitar, and on piano both Gary Wright and Elton John |
| RICHARD HARRIS - MACARTHUR PARK (1968) hit #2
"MacArthur Park" is a song by
Jimmy Webb, originally composed as part of an intended
cantata. The song was initially rejected by
The Association.
Richard Harris was the first to record it, in 1968; the
song was subsequently
covered by numerous artists. Among the best-known covers
are
Donna Summer's disco arrangement from 1978 and Waylon
Jennings's version recorded in 1969.
While it was a commercially successful song multiple times after it was released, "MacArthur Park" utilized flowery lyrics and metaphors (most famously, love being likened to a cake left out in the rain) that were considered by media such as the Los Angeles Times to be "polarizing" and "loopy." The song was first recorded by Richard Harris, after Harris first met Webb at a fundraiser in East Los Angeles, California in late 1967. Webb had been invited to provide the musical backdrop at the piano. Out of the blue, Harris suggested to him that he wanted to release a record. Webb didn't take it seriously until he later received a telegram from Harris, requesting that he come to London to begin the project. After exhaustively listening to all of Webb's compositions, Harris selected "MacArthur Park" for his pop music debut. The Harris recording of "MacArthur Park" comprises four sections or movements:
The recording was made on December 21, 1967, at Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood, with further work done on December 29 and 30. The musicians in the original studio recording included members of the famous "Wrecking Crew" of Los Angeles-based studio musicians who played on many of the hit records of the 1960s and 1970s. Personnel used included Hal Blaine on drums, Larry Knechtel on keyboards, Joe Osborn on bass guitar, and Mike Deasy on guitar along with Webb himself on harpsichord. The recording appeared on Harris's album A Tramp Shining in 1968 and was released as a single. It was an unusual choice at its more than seven minute length and multi-part structure. Harris topped the music charts in Europe and Australia, and peaked at No. 2 on the American charts. The song peaked at No. 10 in Billboard's Easy Listening survey, and was No. 8 for the year on WABC's overall 1968 chart. |
