| TERRY HOKNES - PLEASE REALIZE (1989) Opus #384 - age
18 I wrote my first song in 1982 at age 11 in Grade 6. I would sporadically write 18 few songs over the next 4 years. Starting with my 19th song (Opus #19) I began writing on a very regular basis starting in December 1986 in Grade 11 at Aden Bowman. This included writing over 58 songs with my best friend Nels Krauss over the period of 1986-1992. I wrote 97 songs in 1987 and then 215 songs in 1988. By the time I graduated high school at age 17 I was up to Opus #268. I wrote another 178 songs in 1989. By the time I celebrated my 19th birthday I was up to Opus #524. At that time I was in first year University living in Muenster, SK in residence at St Peters College at the monastery. I met a poet from New York named Philip Murray who I collaborated with writing music to his words 91 songs in total. I wrote my 1000th song the week I turned 25 in January 1996. Even though I was writing all the time and working and performing my own songs at home I never had a band so I didn't play any of the songs in public and I didn't have any money or materials to record proper good quality recordings. So all my demo's were quite primitive and low quality audio. I started recording in 1982 singing along with records. In 1983 I started recording my own versions of songs live on guitar and vocals along with my best friend of the time Zender Millar. In 1989 Nels Krauss and I rented a 4-track cassette recorder for the first time and I rushed through 55 songs in 7 days just to get them on tape though I didnt have any good quality microphones, headphones and knew nothing about EQ and recording levels etc. Each year my demo's would get a bit better sounding and a little more polished so to this day I don't feel I have done justice to any original songs I recorded from 1986 to 1994 when I did the bulk of my writing and recording. |
| THE EAGLES - HEARTACHE TONIGHT (1979) hit #1
Heartache Tonight" is a song written by
Don Henley,
Glenn Frey,
Bob Seger and
J. D. Souther, and recorded by the
Eagles. The track was included on their album
The Long Run and released as a single in 1979. It
reached #1 on the U.S.
Billboard Hot 100 in November of that year.
Although it remained in the top position for only one week,
the single sold 1 million copies.
The recording also received a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The song originated from an electric jam session between Glenn Frey and Bob Seger who would visit Frey's home in Los Angeles whenever he was in town on tour. Frey already had the verse written and in the heat of jamming, Seger blurted out the chorus. According to Frey, "J.D. [Souther], Don and I finished that song up. No heavy lyrics-the song is more of a romp-and that's what it was intended to be." The song was covered by country music singer John Anderson on the tribute album Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles and was also covered by Michael Bublé on his album Crazy Love. |
| TWISTED SISTER - WE'RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT (1984) hit #21
We're Not Gonna Take It" is a
1984 hit song by the American
glam metal/heavy
metal band
Twisted Sister from their album
Stay Hungry. The song was first released as a single
(with "You Can't Stop Rock & Roll" as the B-side) on April
27, 1984. The Stay Hungry album was released two
weeks later, on May 10, 1984. The single reached number 21
on the
Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, making it Twisted
Sister's only Top 40 single. The song was ranked number 47
on 100 Greatest 80's Songs and number 21 on VH1's 100
Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s.
The song premiered in San Bernardino in 1984, along with many other songs from Stay Hungry. The song was written by vocalist Dee Snider. As influences for the song, he cites the glam rock band Slade, the punk band Sex Pistols, and the Christmas carol, "O Come, All Ye Faithful".[citation needed] The song is notable for its popular music video directed by Marty Callner, with its emphasis on slapstick comedy, where a parent gets the worst of the band's mischief. Controversy arose when the depiction of the family in the video caused a public outcry long before the "explicit lyrics" warning was placed on records, cassettes, and CDs. This led to the formation of the Parents Music Resource Center, co-founded by Tipper Gore (who later became Second Lady of the United States). Mark Metcalf, the actor portraying the father in the video, had previously played Neidermeyer, the ROTC student commander in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978). In a reference to his role in the film, Metcalf says "A Twisted Sister pin? On your uniform?!" in the video. Snider himself can also be heard cursing and swearing the question "A pledge pin? On your uniform?" at the end of the song |
| THE ANDREA TRUE CONNECTION - MORE MORE MORE (1976) hit #4
More, More, More" is a song written by
Gregg Diamond and recorded by American disco artist
Andrea True, who performed under the name "The Andrea
True Connection". It was released in February 1976, and
became her signature track and one of the most popular songs
of the disco era.
The song has been covered a number of times since by artists including Samantha Fox, Bananarama, Rachel Stevens and Dannii Minogue. In 1999 Canadian band Len sampled the instrumental break in "More, More, More" and used it as the backdrop for their top-ten single "Steal My Sunshine". The song has also been used in television promotional advertisements, such as for American television series Sex and the City. The title hook line is used as a jingle by Canadian supermarket chain Save-On-Foods. The song was originally recorded in Jamaica where True, a porn star, had been appearing in a television commercial. An attempted coup prevented her from leaving the country with her wages from the commercial. Resourcefully, True called on Gregg Diamond to come down to Jamaica to write and record the song with her. Buddah Records originally released the song only to discos in the winter of 1975. The popularity of "More, More, More" was immense. Widespread listener interest convinced Buddha to release the single commercially in the spring. The song rose to number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and number twenty three on the soul singles chart. The single was a successful disco hit peaking at number two. Overseas, the song peaked at number five on the UK Singles Chart. |
| MINNIE RIPERTON - LOVIN' YOU (1975) hit #1
Lovin' You" is a 1975 hit single by
Minnie Riperton. The song became the 400th No. 1 hit on
the
Billboard Hot 100 on April 5, 1975. Additionally, the
song reached No. 2 in the
UK, and No. 3 on the R&B charts in the US. The song is
especially noteworthy due to the unusually high
pitches that Riperton reaches during the song. It's also
noteworthy for the sound of the chirping songbirds that are
heard throughout the song, which Riperton phonates by use of
the
whistle register.
It was the fourth single from the album Perfect Angel (1974). The song is notable for Riperton's use of the whistle register. "Lovin' You" was among the first several songs to top the U.S. pop chart without the help of a percussion instrument. Prior examples of percussion-less Number Ones were Jim Croce – "Time in a Bottle" (1973), The Beatles – "Yesterday" (1964) and on the UK Singles Chart, The Beatles – "Eleanor Rigby" (1966). According to the liner notes from Riperton's compilation CD Petals, the melody for "Lovin' You" was created as a distraction for her daughter (Maya Rudolph) when she was a baby so that Minnie and her husband Richard could hang out. Maya was in the studio with her mother on the day the song was recorded and Riperton can be heard singing her daughter's name at the end of the song, but only in the unedited or album version of the song. The song fades out early in the single edit, because the disc jockeys felt that the repeated "MAYA" was being overdone and too misunderstood, thinking that it was a "Mayan Chant". Minnie Julia Riperton (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979) was an American singer-songwriter best known for her vocal range of five-and-a-half octaves, and her 1975 single "Lovin' You". She was married to songwriter and music producer Richard Rudolph from 1972 until her death in the summer of 1979. They had two children—music engineer Marc Rudolph and actress/comedienne Maya Rudolph |
| KING CRIMSON - FRAME BY FRAME (1981) Album: Discipline (1981) February 21st 1990 - my #1 favorite daily song for 7 days at age 19 while living at the monastery in Muenster, SK for 1st year University. My best friend of the past 5 years at that time was Nels Krauss who gave me a cassette tape full of King Crimson songs to listen to. This was my favorite one by them. Frame by Frame" is a song performed by the progressive rock band King Crimson. The song appears on the 1981 album Discipline as the second track. It is 5:09 in length. The time signature in the chorus is 7/4 and the guitar/drum rhythms can also be considered polyrhythmic to each other. At 4:21 Belew and Fripp are playing in 7/8 until one guitar plays in 13/8 starting at 4:31. The guitars line after 91 beats. This song is well known for the very fast riff (16th notes at 155 BPM) that Robert Fripp plays at the beginning and after each chorus Discipline is an album by the band King Crimson, released in 1981. This album was King Crimson's first album following a seven-year hiatus. Only founder Robert Fripp and later addition Bill Bruford remained from previous incarnations. The rest of the band was Adrian Belew (guitar, vocals) and Tony Levin (bass, stick). The album resulted in a more updated 1980s new wave pre-techno sound mixed with the previous dark and heavy sounds of the 1970s |
| RINGO STARR - LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING (1970) Album: Sentimental Journey (1970) My friend Terry Butler had this album and I think I traded him the new Journey album for it thinking he was getting the better part of the deal but I was very happy to acquire another Beatles related album on my quest to owning them at age 11 in 1982. July 14th 1990 - my #3 favorite daily song for 3 days at age 19 before entering 2nd year University celebrating Ringo's 50th birthday.
Sentimental Journey is the debut solo
album by former
Beatles drummer
Ringo Starr, released in 1970, as the band was
splintering apart. Although Starr was the third member of
the group to issue solo work (after
George Harrison and
John Lennon), Sentimental Journey is notable for
being the first non-avant-garde studio album by a member of
the band, in light of the experimental, soundtrack or live
releases his aforementioned bandmates had already released.
Paul McCartney's debut,
McCartney, would follow three weeks after
Sentimental Journey's release.
Sentimental Journey received fair reviews upon its release, although many critics found the idea of Starr covering standards a bit odd considering his musical background. His fame in the Beatles was all that was required, however, to get it all the way to #7 in the UK - with no single release to promote it - and #22 in the US. Although the style of the album took many by surprise, Starr's swift follow-up, Beaucoups of Blues, would be just as radical a stylistic shift. The pub on the cover of the album is The Empress in Dingle, Liverpool, which is one of the nearest pubs to Ringo's place of birth. The superimposed figures in the windows of the pub are Ringo's relatives. |
| TALK TALK - IT'S MY LIFE (1984) hit #31
It's My Life" is the title of a song by the British
synthpop band
Talk Talk. Written by
Mark Hollis and
Tim Friese-Greene, it was the title track on the band's
second album in 1984. The song was released as a single
in January 1984, then again in 1985, and a third time in
1990 when it finally became a hit and reached #13 in the UK.
In 2003, it was
covered by
No Doubt, also making it into the UK Top 20.
The song was the first collaboration between Hollis and Friese-Greene. "It's My Life" was released as the album's lead single in January 1984. The single reached #46 in the UK charts, but did better in other countries; it reached #31 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play, #30 in Canada and Netherlands, #33 in Germany, #32 in New Zealand, #25 in France and #7 in Italy. The single was re-released in the UK in 1985, but this time only reached #93. However, in 1990, "It's My Life" was reissued again to promote the compilation album Natural History: The Very Best of Talk Talk. This time, the song was a hit in the UK, reaching number 13, the band's highest chart-placing single. The song is also featured on the Rockstar Games video game for PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories on the 'Flash FM' radio station. It also is one of the songs played during gameplay for Activision Anthology for the PlayStation 2. The song is featured on Saints Row: The Third on 'The Mix 107.77' radio station. |
| SMITH - YOU DON'T LOVE ME (1970) Album: Minus Plus (1970) November 30th 1987 - my #4 favorite daily song for 1 day at age 16 in Grade 12 living in Ruth Street. November 27th 1989 - my #2 favorite daily song for 2 days at age 18 living at the monastery at St Peters College for 1st year University in Muenster, SK.
Smith were an
American
rock
band, formed in
Los Angeles,
California, in 1969 They had a
blues-based sound and scored a
Top 5
hit in 1969 with a cover of the
Burt Bacharach song "Baby
It's You", featuring
Gayle McCormick on
lead vocals. This
disc sold over one million copies between July and
October 1969, out-charted popular versions by the
Beatles and the
Shirelles, and received a
gold record awarded by the
R.I.A.A. The group evolved from "The Smiths"
(not to be confused with later English band
"The Smiths"), which featured two of the same members,
and had attempted a hit single with "Now I Taste The Tears",
produced and arranged by Ron Budnik. "Tears" was a brooding,
foreboding sounding record that didn't chart well. When the
band didn't succeed, McCormick, who had started her career
singing songs by
Tina Turner,
Etta James and others, was added as a front woman and
lead vocalist. The group were then discovered by 1960s
rocker
Del Shannon in a
nightclub in Los Angeles. Shannon
arranged "Baby It's You" for the group and got them
signed to the
ABC-Dunhill Records
label.

| TOAD THE WET SPROCKET - PRAY YOUR GODS (1991) Album: Fear (1991) July 11th 2005 - my #6 favorite daily song for 36 days at age 34 living at Eastview the week I met and started dating Tasha.
fear is the third studio
album released by
Toad the Wet Sprocket, their second album for
Columbia Records, released in 1991. Toad the Wet
Sprocket's first album,
Bread & Circus, was self-recorded and released.
Their second album,
Pale, was self-recorded and the first released by
Columbia. The album was preceded by the single "Is It
For Me", which failed to chart well. Its best known single,
the second commercial release "All I Want", which reached
#15 on the
Billboard Hot 100, helped launch their career. On
November 6, 1992, fear was certified
gold and on September 1, 1994, it was certified platinum
Toad the Wet Sprocket is an American alternative rock band formed in 1986. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss. The band enjoyed chart success in the 1990s with the singles "Walk on the Ocean", "All I Want", "Something's Always Wrong", and "Fall Down", among others. The band broke up in 1998 to pursue other projects but in 2006 began touring the United States as a band in small-venue, short-run tours each summer. In December 2010, the band announced their official reunion as a full-time working band and have started writing songs for their first new studio album since their 1997 Columbia Records release Coil |
| J.B. QUAGMIRE - UP THE APPLES AND PEARS (1966) February 28th 1990 - my #3 favorite daily song for 5 days at age 19 in 1st year University at St Peters College in Muenster, SK where I lived in residence at the monastery with fellow students Liem Nguyen and Calvin Waldbillig. I started a 2 year project to listen and learn every 45 rpm I owned this included the A and B sides of 1000 singles I owned. This is why I learned such a large varied odd collection of songs from 1988-1991 but discovered many gems like this song. This was a very rare 1966 45 rpm that I owned and loved both sides but its very obscure folk/party sing along type music. The artist is undocumented online. |
| SPIRIT - TURN TO THE RIGHT (1981) Album: Potatoland (1981) I bought this CD new in 1994 at age 23. The Adventures of Kaptain Kopter & Commander Cassidy in Potato Land was originally recorded by Randy California and Ed Cassidy during the 1973/74 hiatus period of Spirit. A concept album of sorts, interspersed with dialogue, it was only released in skeletal form in 1981 through Line Records. A reworked and fuller version, still somewhat erroneously credited to Spirit, was released in 2006 and remains available as The Original Potato Land Spirit was an American jazz/hard rock/progressive rock/psychedelic band founded in 1967, based in Los Angeles, California |
| STEVE MILLER BAND - SEASONS (1968) Album: Brave New World (1968) February 5th 1990 - my #3 favorite daily song for 3 days at age 19 while living at the monastery at Muenster, SK at St Peters College for 1st year University. My good friend Ross Martin also liked Steve Miller at this time. This is the only full studio album I ever got into by Steve Miller. The Steve Miller Band is an American rock band formed in 1967 in San Francisco, California. The band is managed by Steve Miller on guitar and lead vocals, and is known for a string of (mainly) mid-1970s hit singles that are staples of the classic rock radio format
Brave New World is the third
album by
American
rock band
The Steve Miller Band, released in 1969. The tracks
"Celebration Song" and "My Dark Hour" featured
Paul McCartney on backing vocals, drums and bass guitar
credited as Paul Ramon. The primary guitar riff
on "My Dark Hour" was also used on the title track to Steve
Miller's 1976 album
Fly Like An Eagle. "Space Cowboy" uses
the same primary guitar riff as the
Beatles' song "Lady
Madonna". It was released as downloadable content for
the video game
Rock Band on January 20, 2009.

| SPIRIT - MAYBE YOU'LL FIND (1975) Album: Son Of Spirit (1975) September 24th 1990 - my #6 favorite daily song for 2 days at age 19 in 2nd year University. I joined a band at this time called The Smoking Crawdads with Mark Rogstad, Gerard Saretsky and Jed Evans and we made our live debut at Amigos in December.
Son of Spirit was the second album that
Spirit released through
Mercury Records. It was released in October 1975. Unlike
Spirit of '76, however, it did not make the national
charts. Though some of the album's tracks were from the
same sessions that produced Spirit of '76, it also
features several
Randy California solo demos that have been augmented by
a
rhythm machine. It was originally reissued on CD in the early 1990s, and
it was remastered and reissued (on a CD that also included
Farther Along) in 2004 by Beat Goes On.
Spirit was an American jazz/hard rock/progressive rock/psychedelic band founded in 1967, based in Los Angeles, California. The original lineup of the group evolved from an earlier Los Angeles band, The Red Roosters, which included Randy California (guitars, vocals), Mark Andes (bass) and Jay Ferguson (vocals, percussion). With the addition of California's stepfather Ed Cassidy (drums), and keyboard player John Locke the new band was originally named the Spirits Rebellious (after a book by Khalil Gibran) but was soon shortened simply to Spirit. In 1966 Randy California had also played with Jimi Hendrix (then known as Jimmy James) in his band, The Blue Flame |
| FEFE DOBSON - GHOST (2010) hit #14 in Canada September 17th 2010 - my #2 favorite daily song for 32 days at age 39 while rehearsing with Nakul Aloni and Peter Abonyi putting together a new blues band in Saskatoon - The Back Alley Blues Band.
Ghost" is a song by Canadian singer–songwriter
Fefe Dobson from her second (released) studio album,
Joy. It was produced by
Kevin Rudolf, and co-written by Dobson, Rudolf,
Kara DioGuardi and J. Kasher. The song officially
impacted mainstream radio on May 11, 2010 and was released
as a single on June 21, 2010 by 21 Music and
Island Records. The song has achieved success in Canada,
in sales and airplay, attaining the peak position of #14 on
the
Canadian Hot 100. "Ghost" appears on the
MuchDance 2011 compilation that was released on
November 2, 2010.
The song has charted on the Canadian Hot 100, debuting at #98 on the issue dated June 19, 2010. The song peaked at #14 first attained on the chart for the week of August 21, 2010 due to high airplay and digital downloads. It was Fefe Dobson's first single on the Canadian AC charts of Mediabase & Nielsen BDS. Felicia Lily "Fefe" Dobson (born February 28, 1985) is a Canadian singer-songwriter. Her self-titled debut album earned her two Juno Award nominations. Her second album, Sunday Love, was not released and she was terminated from her recording company. During production of Dobson's subsequent studio album Joy, with her manager's recording company (21 Music), she was re-signed to her original major recording company (Island Records). Both companies continued working on Joy, and after experiencing numerous delays, it was released on November 22, 2010 in Canada and November 30, 2010 in the United States. Her music has been covered by other artists and featured in cinema, television, and more |
| TERRY HOKNES - OUR DESTINY (2005) Opus #1100 ?? As the new century began a new chapter in songwriting where the focus was more on recording polished songs but writing way less and very sporadic. I had written 500 songs by the age of 19 and had hit 1000 songs by the age of 25. But since then I can go over a year at a time without writing a song but really focusing in most cases on a more commercial type of polished song however I still venture into all possible genres. I continue to play and sing every part on all my songs and recordings. I hired Neil Meckelborg of Audio Art to record my songs in 2001. We started out recording a full album at their location downtown behind the Bus depot but eventually worked on recordings at Neil's private studio. In total we recorded 3 full albums of material of my songs and a full length album of songs I wrote with Marilyn Parney that I produced. Neil and I also worked on a Trooper hit song karaoke CD in 2001. I spent 18 months recording with Neil and over 40 songs and over $10,000.00 in studio bills I paid at that time to record the best quality audio ever on my songs. Neil had used Sonar Cakewalk so I learned how to use it and have used that now for a decade in my own studio. |
| THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS - OVER AND OVER (1964)
Album: You've Lost That Loving Feeling (1964) May 31st 1988 - my #1 favorite daily song for 3 days at age 17 the month I graduated high school. At this time I loved the song because I didnt yet know the famous #1 hit cover by Dave Clark Five.
The Righteous Brothers were the
musical duo of
Bill Medley and
Bobby Hatfield. They recorded from 1963 through 1975,
and continued to perform until Hatfield's death in 2003.
Their emotive vocal stylings were sometimes dubbed "blue-eyed
soul".
Medley and Hatfield both possessed exceptional vocal talent, with range, control and tone that helped them create a strong and distinctive duet sound and also to perform as soloists. Medley sang the low parts with his deep, soulful bass, with Hatfield taking the higher register vocals with his soaring tenor. They adopted their name in 1962 while performing together in the Los Angeles area as part of a five-member group called The Paramours, which featured John Wimber (who was much later one of the founders of the Vineyard Movement) on keyboards. At the end of one particular performance, a U.S. Marine in the audience shouted, "That was righteous, brothers!", prompting the pair to adopt the name when they embarked on a career as a duo. |
| SUGARLAND - BABY GIRL (2005) April 2nd 2005 - my #1 favorite current country song for 10 weeks.
Baby Girl" is the debut single of
American country music group
Sugarland. Released in July 2004, the single reached a
peak position of #2 on the
Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now
Hot Country Songs) charts in April 2005. The song spent
a total of 46 weeks on the country music charts, setting a
new record for the longest chart run since the inception of
Nielsen SoundScan digital chart tabulation in 1990. In
addition, "Baby Girl" became the highest-peaking debut
single for a country music group in 14 years.
"Baby Girl" entered the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart at number 56 on the chart week of July 24, 2004. The single reached its peak position of number 2 on the chart week of April 2, 2005, a position that it held for two weeks. "Baby Girl" became the highest-charting debut single for a country group since 1991. It also set a new record for the longest chart run since the inception of Nielsen SoundScan in 1990, spending 46 weeks on the charts. Joel Whitburn's book Hot Country Songs 1944-2008 contradicts this record, citing Gary Allan's "Right Where I Need to Be" as the record-holder for this era with a 48-week run. In the same book, "Baby Girl" is tied with Diamond Rio's 2002 single "Beautiful Mess" and Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats" as the second-longest chart run in this era, Underwood's chart run having come in 2006 and 2007 |
| THE CHORDETTES - LOLLIPOP (1958) hit #2 Great fun singalong but love the stacked female harmonies on this huge radio hit.
Lollipop" is a
pop song written by
Julius Dixson and Beverly Ross in 1958 for the duo
Ronald & Ruby, which was covered most successfully by
The Chordettes. Dixson's name is sometimes spelled
"Dixon".
The song is a firm favorite amongst many performing barbershop music. The song originated when Julius Dixon was late for a songwriting session with Beverly Ross. He explained that his daughter had gotten a lollipop stuck in her hair, and that had caused him to be late. Ross was so inspired by the word "lollipop" that she sat down at the piano and produced a version of the song on the spot. Beverly Ross recorded a demo of the song with Ronald Gumm, a 13-year old neighbor of Dixon, under the name Ronald & Ruby. Ross' mother insisted that she use a pseudonym for safety reasons, because they were an interracial duo. RCA got hold of it and Dixon, who owned the master and had produced the demo, agreed to let them release it. Ronald and Ruby's version rose up the chart reaching #20. "Lollipop" was then covered in the United States by female vocal quartet The Chordettes whose version reached #2 and #3 on the Billboard pop and R&B charts, respectively. The song became a worldwide hit. The Chordettes' version reached #6 in the UK, where there was also a cover version by The Mudlarks which made #2. |
| SANTANA - SOUL SACRIFICE - Live (1969) Album: Woodstock (1970) and Santana (1969) August 25th 1989 - my #2 favorite daily song for 1 day at age 18 right before entering 1st year University at Muenster, SK. A couple weeks before I moved away from home we spent our last family visit at our family cabin in Manitou Beach, SK with my family and grandparents. This was the last time I did anything with my grandpa who died on September 8th at age 70. The cabin is still standing today but grandma sold it around 2000 to new owners. The cabin was built by my great grandfather Jack Walters around 1927. It is about 1 mile west of the famous Danceland hall in Manitou Beach. Always liking to celebrate anniversaries I spent much of the month listening to the Woodstock festival soundtrack in honor of its 20th anniversary.
Soul Sacrifice" is an instrumental song by
Santana, that was released on the Prime Cuts label and
appears on their self-titled debut album,
Santana.
It was played by Santana at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. It was filmed and later released as a part of the iconic Woodstock documentary. The Woodstock performance of the song is often remembered for Michael Shrieve's elaborate drum solo; Shrieve's name has become synonymous with the early days of Santana and their performance at Woodstock. The performance also features Santana playing two long solos that epitomize his hard-driven, ultra-fast Latin rock-blues sound. Santana has since admitted he was under the influence of LSD during the performance of the song, due to the fact the bands' set was pushed up 12 hours ahead of its original start time |
