CHILL THE MUSICAL

The official website of the hot new Canadian Musical

Its the age-old story of young against old, of passion against reason, of strife against love, set in a refrigerator near you!  The Old Ham struggles to maintain authority when a power failure threatens to over-heat the fridge and many of its residents turn against each other, but his confidence is shaken when his young charge Kiwi rebels against his every word.  Two young lovers choose to go their own way regardless of their families' wishes, even if their world ends.  What will become of their home?  Will Olives and Grapes have peace?  Will Kiwi and Ham reconcile?  Will everyone learn to just CHILL?

Chill is the story of the inhabitants of a fridge and what happens to them after the power fails.  The Old Ham, the oldest resident of the fridge, wonders why the younger generation won't listen to him, and why young Kiwi wants to explore the outside world.  A family of black Olives moves into the fridge, next to a family of green Grapes, and shortly thereafter the power mysteriously fails.  Fear and suspicion reign, but a young Olive finds herself in love with a young, green Grape.  A romance begins.  Meanwhile, Kiwi sets off, alone, in search of Bananas, the world beyond the fridge, and a solution to the heatwave.

As the temperature rises so does the tension among the residents of the fridge.  Ham and Eggplant call for calm, and point to the Pickles as an example of how to live together in peace.  Accusations fly, Grapes and Olives blame eachother for the power failure, and Ham begins to lose confidence in himself.

Eggplant councils Olive on her feelings for Grape, but the round, young lovers start to meet in secret.  Kiwi's adventure ends prematurely.  Ham and Kiwi reunite; Ham pledges to respect Kiwi more: Kiwi appologizes to Ham, but Grapes and Olives continue to fight.  In the middle of choas, the lovers pledge themselves to eachother come what may.  When the power returns, the warring sides lose their suspicion of eachother, and everyone in the fridge can resume their normal lives and just chill.

Cast of Characters

HAM
The Old Ham has been in the fridge longer than anyone can remember.  He is distiguished by his odour of experience and regal, phosphorescent glow.  He takes his leadership role in the community even though there are those who do not.
EGGS
Ham's irreverent companions, Eggs take nothing seriously.  They like to comment on everything in the fridge and don't seem to care about Ham's authority, although they certainly recognise his age.  The eggs are the youngest of all those in the fridge.
EGGPLANT
She is the closest to Ham in age, and loves him, even if she feels he's far too conservative at times.  She stands by him because she knows he loves everyone in the fridge and knows he doesn;t always express it well.  Sometimes she tries to speak for Ham.
OLIVE
Young, black and beautiful, Olive fears nothing other than losing her opportunity to be with Grape.  Even if she can't spend her life with Grape, she'll never regret her feelings for him.  The rising temperature in the fridge only increases her desire to be with Grape and she plans to accept her fate bravely.
GRAPE
Young and open-minded, he loves his family but doesn't share their animosity towards the Olives.  He is unconvinced that blaming them for the power failure is right or fair.  He doesn't know how to stop the conflict in the fridge but loves Olive and cares about her more.
KIWI
A rebel looking for a cause, exploration or restoring the chill to the fridge, Kiwi is young and frustrated.  Ham won't let Kiwi make decisions or explore the world, even though Kiwi's motives are pure.  Kiwi's energy and curiosity overwhelm Ham's rules; Kiwi runs away from home.
OLIVES
The new family in the neighborhood who move in just before the power fails.  They become the scapegoat for the trouble in the fridge.
GRAPES
A young and large family, the Grapes have been in the fridge long enough to call it home.  They do not welcome newcomers.

Song by Song

All is well in the fridge, apart from a minor tiff between Ham and Eggs.  It seems the Eggs don't respect Ham; they think he's old, smelly and green.  Ham explains his lofty position head of the fridge community and the beauty of their chilly lives in HOME.
    The Eggs are unconvinced.
A family of black Olives moves into the fridge.  The Grapes who live nearby are uneasy with the newcomers, the STRANGERS.  But young Olive sees, and falls in love with young Grape.  Its a new feeling, one Olive has never felt before, but she knows others have felt this feeling. it THE USUAL UNUSUAL.
Kiwi, much younger than Old Ham, doesn't understand why Ham says Kiwi can't leave the fridge to explore the world beyond the door.  Ham feels Kiwi is just too young to make big decisions.  Kiwi pleads with Ham; its time to explore, because, Kiwi says, I HAVE HEARD ABOUT BANANAS.  Ham has a different view, and tries to convince Kiwi that LIFE IS NOT A DANDYLION SALAD.
The power fails and the fridge gets warmer.  Ham calls for unity and calm, which many Olives and Grapes take to mean unity within their families against all others, a different sort of UNITY.
Conflict erupts and Ham feels that not only has the power failed in the fridge, but so has his authority in the community.  He and Eggplant try to understand the situation.  They ask WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO OUR HOME.
Olive approaches Grape, they are in love, but after she leaves Grape is pressured by his family to agree that Olives family, THEM, are to blame for the power failure.  Olive knows that she has to act fast, so she sends an anxious note to Grape: TREMBLE.
Kiwi wants to help find a solution to the warming of the fridge, but Ham sees Kiwi as a nuisance.  Their disagreement reaches a climax: I'M LOSING YOUR MIND.  Kiwi runs.  Eggplant has a similar meeting with Olive, telling her she ought to be patient with her love for Grape, that there is no need to JUMP A GRAPE.
Olive and Grape have a secret meeting and Grape tells her he doesn't blame her family for the heatwave.  They pledge their love and trust; I WILL BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SAY.
Ham holds a meeting with Eggplant and some Olives and Grapes.  Ham can't find a solution to the Olive-Grape problem and loses the support of both sides when he asks them for tolerance.  He begins to think MAYBE THIS HAM'S BEEN AROUND TOO LONG.
Kiwi fails to reach the light in the fridge, which is suspected to have something to do with the power outtage, and now Kiwi is afraid to go home.  After an unhelpful conversation with the eggs Kiwi feels DOWN.
Olive waits for the return of her brother with the second note from Grape.  She wants to see him again, and is impatient, there is NO TIME TO LOSE.
Ham and Eggplant have another meeting with Olives and Grapes, and tell them that if they want peace they should GO ASK THE PICKLES, because they understand unity.  The meeting brings no peace.
Olive and Grape have another secret meeting and reaffirm their love in defiance of all else:  REVEAL THE WORLD TO ME.  The power returns; Kiwi returns and Ham tells Kiwi that all that matters is how they treat each other, their arguement is unimportant by comparison, IT DOESN"T MATTER.
With a chill once again in the fridge the cause of recrimination disappears and everyone begins to feel as if they are HOME AGAIN.
